Transformational Thought
I love to please my daughters. Who doesn’t want to see their kids happy, especially if we are the one bringing them delight? But I also want to see them safe and healthy. So when they make unhealthy or dysfunctional requests, it is easy for me to say “NO!” … even though they aren’t pleased, or are actually upset, or cry because of my answer.
Don’t believe me? What about when they ask … for their third bowl of ice cream … for the keys to the car and they’re only 13 … to stay out to midnight on a school night when they are 14 … to camp out with a boyfriend, alone, when they are 16. All these will easily get a “no” answer from me regardless of how displeased my beloved daughters are.
When fellow adults make dysfunctional requests, for some reason, for most of us, it is harder to say “no”. Whether I think they know more than I do about the particular situation … or they know what’s best for themselves more than I do … or I fear and hate being uneasy when people are mad or upset at me … or I fear their rejection … or I need their approval … or I need to be needed or accepted. Many “I need…” or “I fear…” lenses, based on a me-centered mentality, significantly interfere with our perspective, and lead to disrespectful, dysfunctional, or even sinful relational conduct.
When we focus on trying to please people by acting dysfunctionally, we are not serving God. If we are truly His servants, then our primary goal will be to please Him first, not others.
When Jesus lived on earth, many who believed in Him would not admit their faith. Because these people were more concerned about personal safety and other people’s opinions rather than God’s opinion, they did not live out their faith. Likewise, when we live as people-pleasers, we are demonstrating the fact that we are more concerned about people’s approval instead of God’s … and therefore our walk with Him will always be hindered.
Today, ask yourself: What is my greatest perceived need or greatest perceived threat when someone makes a request of me … or when I feel the need to people-please in a relationship? Whom am I trying to please ... God or the person? Maybe most of your life is lived to please God, but there is still some situation … or some person … that sparks you to be a people-pleaser. God wants us to put Him first in all things … we cannot please Him by placing more importance on people’s opinions … or our needs … over His.
Prayer
Dear Father God, I do want to please You. Forgive me for the times I let my desire to be accepted by a person outweigh my desire to please You. Thank You for Your love and for accepting me unconditionally. Help me to be a better servant, doing the right thing, not the people-pleasing thing, as I grow healthy relationships with others. I pray this and all prayers in the name of the One who was the perfect servant, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children say - AMEN!
The Truth
I am not trying to please people. I want to please God. Do you think I am trying to please people? If I were doing that, I would not be a servant of Christ.
Galatians 1:10
Many people did believe in him, however, including some of the Jewish leaders. But they wouldn’t admit it for fear that the Pharisees would expel them from the synagogue. For they loved human praise more than the praise of God.

Stepping Stones: Wisdom: Using the Creator’s Instruction Manual
Transformational Thought
I remember when I was putting together one of the girl’s first bicycles on Christmas Eve. It was past midnight and I still wasn’t finished, but was getting more frustrated as the pedals wouldn’t work. Martine came down and “encouraged” me to use the instruction manual so we could get to bed. Wow, 15 minutes later we were snug in our bed.
If you look up the word “wisdom” you will find as the first definition, “having the ability to make sensible decisions and judgments.” It’s been said, “to live is to choose.” And how many times have bad decisions put us in that downward spiral? Today’s scripture reading tells us that to receive God’s wisdom (think about that for a moment … God’s wisdom) all we have to do is ask … but there’s a condition … we must ask in faith.
I know I look back every 5 years or so and say, “Wow, if only I knew then what I know now ….” The problem is, I think I know everything now and what God should allow to happen in my life. But in 5 years, I will again say, “Wow, if only I knew then what I know now….” It is always like that. We will never know enough to be the one trusted to really be in charge and call the shots.
I am amazed by our pride and stubbornness as we continually rely on our own understanding instead of His, even when we know our track record in certain areas is terrible. Reading the manufacturer’s instruction manual always works. Winging the assembly of my life on my own costs me time, energy, money, and lots of stress and frustration. He is my creator, made for amazing endeavors, and has given me the most amazing Instruction Manual ever written. We have to be idiots not to follow it. But amazingly, we chuck it to the side and use our own bogus manual written by Satan, the world, and our flesh.
Today, stop facing life’s challenges and storms in a half-witted way. Instead let’s ask for and receive from Him who “gives generously and without finding fault”. Why would we want to make decisions with any wisdom other than His? Pretty arrogant, isn’t it … thinking we know it all, especially knowing our own track record. Be wise. Whose instruction manual are you using to assemble your life … yours or HIS? WITHIN REACH helps you apply His Instruction Manual to your decisions. Your decision, choose well.
Prayer
Father, I am learning Lord, that the battles I fight each day are not always fair. But through these battles I trust that You are watching over me and that You have a plan for me and for all of us. I have challenges that are far too great for me to overcome. I thank You, Lord, for helping me endure these burdens with Your presence and by bringing this Stepping Stones prayer community together. During times of burdens and trials, I lack wisdom, Lord. I don’t know what to do … which way to turn. But then I turn to the gift of faith that you have given me … and that faith leads me to believe that I will receive Your wisdom. You tell me in James 1:5-6 that if I lack wisdom all I need to do is to ask You and You will give Your wisdom generously. I am asking Lord, give me Your wisdom this day. I ask with faith and without doubt. Give all of us Your wisdom and peace, so that we too can be victorious in our battles and trials ... and weather well the storms in our lives. I ask You, my Lord and God, to align my desires with Your purpose. I pray this in the name of the One who used Your instruction manual when tempted by the evil one, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children say - AMEN!
The Truth
How much better it is to get wisdom than gold! And to get understanding is to be chosen above silver.
Proverbs 16:16
If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.
James 1:5-6
So you will find favor and good repute in the sight of God and man. Trust in the LORD with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.

Stepping Stones: Faith is Getting in God’s Wheelbarrow
Transformational Thought
Two talented tightrope walkers amazed the crowd with acrobatics while crossing treacherous Niagara Falls. After many dangerous stunts, one acrobat asked the crowd if they thought he could cross the rope pushing his partner in a wheelbarrow. One man yelled, “I believe you can because you performed so many amazing feats already.” After the acrobat wheeled his partner across the Falls in the wheelbarrow, he again asked the crowd to be next and get in the wheelbarrow. No one came forward. They believed he could accomplish the feat, but lacked enough faith to put their own life in his hands.
Would you get in that acrobat’s wheelbarrow? Intellectual faith (or belief) is knowing you would be safe. Behavioral faith puts into action what we actually believe. There are simple truths that just jump out of The Holy Bible and grab us. Hebrews 11:16 contains one of those “ah ha” truths: Without faith, it is impossible to please God. Everyday is filled with these crossroads … of whether we truly believe God is who He says He is, does what He says He does, and knows all He says He knows. Do we just intellectually believe but in our daily lives avoid His wheelbarrow test? Or do we really have faith as evidenced by action based on that intellectual knowledge? This is where the rubber meets the road. You see, it is not just believing ... belief is where it starts and is the first intellectual step. But then you have to have faith, make it real, apply it to your life, take the leap into His hands with all your being.
Faith in Jesus as Lord of your life is what separates the spiritually mature from the spiritually struggling believer. Faith tells God we are willing to put our life, our needs, and our fate in His hands, and are willing to let Him be in control instead of us. We actually get in the wheelbarrow … without reservation or fear! We recognize that He is God, and we are His flawed human children who need all He will infinitely give. God loves this like any parent would. When we are truly able to have behavioral faith, admit our weakness, see His strength, and start getting out of His way, He can do amazing transformational work in our lives!!!!
Today, take a chance. Do one thing differently … the way you know God wants you to do it even though you haven’t in the past. Watch God lead you into freedom. Take a ride in His wheelbarrow. Remember the simple formula of Christian life: Believe > Receive > Become. And the arrows are ever growing doses and actions of faith. Your decision, choose well.
Prayer
Dear Father, I know my increased faith and belief in You is pleasing to You, for You tell me in scripture that without faith it is impossible to please You. I pray that all those reading and walking on these Stepping Stones are becoming a more pleasing people to You. I know that believing that You exist is only the beginning; I know You want a personal, dynamic, life-transforming relationship with me and the entire Stepping Stones community and the world. I know those of us who “earnestly seek You” will be rewarded with Your intimate presence. I place all hope in You, Lord. I pray that You restore me to full health of body, mind and spirit. I pray this in the name of the One who got in Your wheelbarrow and went to the cross, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children say - AMEN!
The Truth
And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.
Hebrews 11:6
God is my refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore, he I will not fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea.

Stepping Stones: Even in Darkness, Light Dawns
Transformational Thought
How many of us believe, deep down, that we deserve a trouble-free life? And even if we don’t feel we actually deserve it, we certainly desire and feel entitled to that problem-free life anyway. What do we really deserve? The wages of sin is death. Just trying to keep things real and be straight with you.
The consequences of Eve and Adam’s sin resulted from choosing “self” over God, and so they experienced separation from God, shame, pain in child birth (and child-rearing), and toiling in the field. Our own sins bring consequences to ourselves and others. We are constantly paying for our sins. Actually, when we sin, we deserve death.
Everything we get in this life ... breathing, walking, thinking, house, family, heat, food, ability to read or listen to this devotional … is all way more than we deserve. What we receive in life is given totally from God; it is His amazing grace. It’s unbelievable that we feel so entitled … that we feel we deserve all the blessings we get. And on top of that, we actually believe we deserve more than we already get.
Instead of being happy about the 38 cancer-free years we enjoyed, we are bitter, believing we “deserve” better. Instead of being happy about the 8 years we had with our son, we ruminate and believe we are entitled to more time with him when he dies. I know this sounds harsh, but we have to get over our level of entitlement, thinking we are the almighty Oz who knows and sees everything. Just because we had something yesterday, we feel entitled to have it again today (job, finances, college, friendship, health, etc). Jesus tells us clearly in John 16:33 that we will have trouble in this world, and that we will only find peace in Him. No pain, no gain.
Today, let go of the illusion of the trouble-free life and begin turning your focus toward your Lord during the dark times, for “Even in darkness light dawns.” Show God you trust His prescription and provision for your life more than your own plan. WITHIN REACH will help you deal with the pain that drives your troubled and regrettable behaviors.
Prayer
Dear Father, Please help me give up the belief that I deserve a problem-free life. I remain constantly hungry for solutions for all the difficulties in my life. I know now that this is false hope. You tell me through Your word that in this world I will have trouble. Help me focus my energy on seeking You … the only perfect One … instead of seeking perfection in this fallen world. I know and believe that it is possible to enjoy You and glorify You in the midst of adverse situations and circumstances. In fact, You have taught me that Your light shines most brightly through believers who trust You while they are in the dark. I thank You, Lord, for the Christians you have placed in my life. The kind of trust I see them having in You is clearly supernatural … only possible by Your Spirit living within them. It’s so beautiful and encouraging to see their hearts so steadfast, trusting in You Lord. I pray this in the name of the One who was perfect and really deserved the trouble free-life, but who instead suffered for me, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children say - AMEN!
The Truth
I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.
John 16:33
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Stepping Stones: I Hope You Get Addicted to this Sleeping Pill!
Transformational Thought
So many times I have patients who come to me with complaints of not feeling rested. We discuss their sleep patterns and “sleep hygiene”… like noise, blinds or light in the room, temperature, bed partner, evening eating, exercise habits, caffeine and alcohol use. Sometimes these corrections help, but usually, something else is going on.
You see, they do need a rest, but not a nap or more sleep. Physical rest isn’t the core issue. What they actually need is a rest from the burdens and conflicts battering them each day. More sleep or a nap only rests the body. It’s not our bodies that needs rest … it’s our souls.
How do you find rest for your soul? We look to so many cheats that masquerade as soothers. Food, alcohol, caffeine, isolation, our kids and their zillion activities, more work, status, a more secure retirement plan, hollow prayer, church activities and service, pornography, exercise, TV, affairs, escape into fantasy through books, movies, internet, computer relationships, social media, and games. The list really is endless.
Where will we find rest for our soul? Jesus tells us, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Don’t fight the experiences and activities of the day. Accept them and see how God is growing you through these specially prescribed circumstances. Seek Him today. Go to Him. He will give you the comfort, peace, and joy you desire and need so your soul will feel rested. When your soul is rested, your body can’t help but have energy when you need it and restful sleep when you need or want it.
Today, put your life in His hands the same way you put your eternal life in His hands. Examine your stressors today and embrace them as workouts to strengthen and grow you. Be thankful for who you will be after the workout. Then ask a wise person to help you see the stressor more objectively … like God sees it. Let your soul rest with Him today and forever. His hands are big enough and soft enough!
Prayer
Dear Father, I come to You weary and burdened, I come to You to rest, I come for Your blessing and grace and to be restored. Today, the way ahead of me feels steep. I am slowing down, Lord, so I can cling tightly to Your hand. I feel You are teaching me a difficult, yet important lesson. I am ready to learn, I lift my hands up to You at this very moment, hands of faith to receive Your lesson, Your peace, Your presence. Light, life, joy, peace flow freely from You. I know that when my focus turns away from You, I reach for other things. As I reach, at times I drop the glowing gift of Your presence. I return to You my Lord; I turn to regain Your presence. I pray this in the name of the One who laid His life on the cross in Your hands, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children say - AMEN!
The Truth
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
Matthew 11:28-29
He only is my rock and my salvation, my stronghold; I shall not be shaken. On God my salvation and my glory rest; the rock of my strength, my refuge is in God. Trust in Him at all times, O people; Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us.

Stepping Stones: Live in “day-tight” Compartments
Transformational Thought
Recently, I was in the midst of a very hectic couple week stretch. The phone rang and my daughter’s boyfriend was on her phone telling me she was in an accident. My heart jumped … imagining the worst-case scenario and wondering why she wasn’t calling me herself. Thankfully, she was talking to the police and all involved were OK. But then came the many hassles of towing, totaling the car, dealing with expenses, having to find and deal for another car, and carpooling while being down one car. I thought I had the next several crazy weeks already planned out. So some of those agenda items got cancelled or moved to a later date.
How much time and energy do you spend fretting and worrying about things for tomorrow? ... next week? … next year? What if you could lay out the blueprint of your life right now? Figured you’d love this option, right? Your life would be set, wouldn’t it? You in charge, calling all the shots, getting the life you desire.
Why then is the divorce rate around 50% ... why is the lemon law necessary … why so many returns after Christmas ... why do so many students transfer colleges, switch majors, or change jobs? All these are situations were ones in which we were able to select exactly what we wanted. We have almost no control of the future, even less knowledge of what’s to come, and a limited idea of what we really need in order to grow into a better person, to really achieve our God-given potential.
You see, it is our natural desire to want to be the authority, the king of our own life. We also live under the flesh-driven delusional that we know everything about ourselves, especially regarding what we need, and when we need it.
You know the drill. When you were 16 you thought you knew everything. Then at 20, you look back and realize you didn’t know much at 16, but now, at 20, you are a genius. Then at 30, you look back at 20 and realize you were in way over your head, but think 30 is where you are really wise. Well, at 48 I know I still don’t know much and am thankful God does. I try to let Him run my life, because when I was I charge, I was great at devising lame excuses to explain why life wasn’t going according to my plan.
Today, try to live one day at a time. Focus on living in “day-tight” compartments. Take what God brings you today and be great with it and grateful for it because it is the perfect gift for you from the perfect gift-giver, regardless of whether you think it is right for you. Don’t let tomorrow’s concerns seep into today. Today is all we can truly need, right now. You don’t need to return it … you can’t!!! Your decision, choose well.
Prayer
Dear Father, I thank You for all Your blessings. I pray that You help me learn to accept the limitations of living one day at a time, trusting You with all my heart. Teach me, Lord, to release all worry and problems into Your care. Doing this brings beautiful simplicity to my life. I pray You will bring Your healing grace to my life and into the lives of those I love who suffer from sickness, fear, and wariness. I pray to You, my God, to help me live a life close to You. Contrary to how the world thinks of You, a life lived close to You is not complicated or cluttered. When I focus on Your presence within me, all things that were once troubling lose their power over me. The world around me is messy and very confusing. But I remember that You have already overcome this world so that I may have peace. I pray this in the name of the One who laid His life perfectly in Your loving hands, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children say - AMEN!
The Truth
These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
John 16:33
And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.
Jeremiah 29:13
You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.
Isaiah 26:3
And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:7
Recently, I was in the midst of a very hectic couple week stretch. The phone rang and my daughter’s boyfriend was on her phone telling me she was in an accident. My heart jumped … imagining the worst-case scenario and wondering why she wasn’t calling me herself. Thankfully, she was talking to the police and all involved were OK. Stepping Stones: Get Radar For His “still, small voice”
Transformational Thought
God’s Word tells us that He does speak to us. If we are not hearing, it’s because we are not listening. When Adam and Eve were in the garden, I believe they had amazing spiritual radar and high spiritual IQ … very sensitive to the spiritual world, inquisitive during their time walking in the Garden with God, and in tune with their own spiritual needs while also having minimal sensitivity, awareness, and need for the physical world and their physical needs. They ultimately enjoyed an awesome spiritual communion with God.
Then their frame of reference experienced a dramatic change. Sin flipped everything inside out resulting in dulled spiritual radar and IQ. This contrasted with a heightened awareness, need, and sensitivity to the physical world and their physical needs. For example, instead of being concerned that they were spiritually dead, they knew they were naked, ran from God, and experienced physical pain.
Think you would never have such an upside down radar? Well, look at yourself ... sex, food, hunger, sleep, illness, physical pain, working out, money, bigger house, more comfortable car, pursuing that adrenaline rush … amazing how needy, sensitive, and aware we are when these physical things “call” out to us. How are your spiritual radar and IQ? You can improve them but it takes effort and intentionality. Start by listening to God. He is always speaking to you directly, periodically through others, as often as you want through the Holy Bible. He speaks constantly in and through your circumstances.
Don’t let Satan and your flesh distract you. Don’t hyper-focus on the really insignificant, “here today, gone tomorrow” material items of this world. Tune your radar … your attentiveness … to the powerful spiritual world of the intangible and eternal … where God resides.
Today, try to make room … make time each day to sit quietly in His presence. His most powerful communication is His still small voice speaking to your spirit. Do not be hurried, for this hurriedness tunes your radar to the physical world and closes your heart to the spiritual world. WITHIN REACH helps you tune your radar to see Him and recognize His direction in all your circumstances.
Prayer
Dear Father, I am waiting here quietly in Your presence. Your thoughts are forming silently in the depths of my being. I do not rush this process. I have learned that hurrying keeps my heart closed and stuck to earthly things. You are the Creator of all things. You are the King of the universe. Yet You choose to make Your home in my broken, humiliated, and humbled heart. It is there that You speak to me in holy whispers. I pray Lord that Your Holy Spirit will quiet my mind so I can hear Your still, small voice within me. I pray this in the name of the One who was perfectly tuned in to Your voice, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children say - AMEN!
The Truth
And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice…
1 Kings 19:12
My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O LORD; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up. For thou art not a God that hath pleasure in wickedness: neither shall evil dwell with thee.
Psalm 5:3-4
‘For this people's heart has grown dull, and with their ears they can barely hear, and their eyes they have closed, lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and turn, and I would heal them.'
But blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear. For truly, I say to you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.

Stepping Stones: Prevenient Pursuit and Grace
Transformational Thought
Most kids don’t come into the world in a totally random way. Most people have been thinking since their childhood about how many kids they will have, how they will parent them, whether they will get an apartment or house with extra bedrooms, plan a nursery, even planning their sexual activity. All before the pregnancy even starts.
Did you know the work of God is present in our lives “before” we are even aware of it? In fact, millennia before we were even born, God knew who we were going to be. He was preparing the circumstances that would have the most influence and impact on us to show us our need for Him. He then is with us from conception to the end of time if we choose to be with Him during this lifetime in which the impact of some key decisions will last forever.
The word prevenient means “to come before.” Think about this for a moment: God has always been there, planning for us, and waiting for us, in anticipation of the loving relationship He desires to have specifically with each one of us. God pursues this relationship … He actively “courts” us through love and grace. It’s unassuming … and never forced.
He is there wooing us, hoping we will accept His amazing offer. His offer is free to us, and saves us so much pain and struggle in this world. He offers an incredible, eternal life in heaven after this one. We were created to have this beautiful romance with God. Without it, we will forever feel emptiness as we turn to ungodly substitutes to attain what we are missing.
Today, take a look at what you are pursuing instead of God. What hollow and harmful substitutes are you letting Satan entice you with? To what are you turning for your needs ... to soothe you … to bring you comfort … to help you escape your troubles? Anything other than God himself or what He provides is a dangerous counterfeit. Know that the Lord is seeking you and has been for thousands of years. Are you ready to receive the love and gifts He offers? When you do, you will be humbled and empowered beyond your dreams. Your decision, choose well.
Prayer
Dear Father, I come to You with a humble, yet thankful heart. It’s always so amazing to know that in spite of my wrong choices, Your love and grace continue to flow to me. What an awesome thought: You have been there waiting for me even before I was born ... waiting with Your ever-present offer of a personal romance with me. I thank You for the love You give me. My Lord and God, please help me seek You as You seek me. I know now that my acceptance of You changes everything. You said “yes” to me at creation and again at the cross when You sent Your only Son to die for my sins. I say “yes” to You, Lord. I say “yes” to the greatest gift anyone could imagine. I pray this surrounded by Your grace and mercy and through Your Son Jesus Christ; and all God’s children say - AMEN!
The Truth
But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.
Ephesians 2:4-5, 8-9
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
Genesis 1:27
For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Stepping Stones: Thankfully, The Story Doesn’t End There
Transformational Thought
This might sound a bit shocking to most of you, but put yourself in these shoes and bear with me. What if you were a murderer, rapist, thief, or child molester … all terribly atrocious, sinful identities. Then you get caught, have a trial, and are found guilty. Your sentence is proclaimed – DEATH! You now anxiously await execution.
Just as they are getting your humane, but very lethal injection ready, the warden runs in to stop everything just in the nick of time. He lets you know of a true and amazing miracle … no one has ever seen anything like it.
He excitedly explains what just happened starting with the basics. The penalty for your crime is death. The accuser (Satan) and justice demand a price to be paid, namely, death. Satan wants it to be you. A perfect person (Jesus), who owed no penalty, has voluntarily taken your place and will be executed in your place. You are now free to go and live. Your penalty is Paid in Full (the first blessing). What a great day.
But if that were the end of the story, it wouldn’t really be that great. You see, who really wants to date, befriend, hire, hangout with, or marry a convicted murderer, rapist, thief, or child molester? We all we judge, avoid, are fearful of, and attack these sinners. Your life, although spared, would be a walking death of isolation, ridicule, obstacles, loneliness, and never-ending effort to prove yourself worthy of a second chance.
This is where the even more amazing, second blessing comes from above. The King of Kings, Lord of Lords, Prince of Peace, Almighty Creator of everything actually wants to hang out with you, date you, and even marry you forever. He trusts you with His kids, and His valuable possessions. Most of all, He really loves you above all things and wants to get to know you intimately regardless of your sins, past, present, and future.
Today, try to see you the way God sees you. How much different could your life be? Now look at God with the gratitude and love that He deserves for all the grace and double blessing He extends to you (if we could even muster 1/1000 the love He gives us – wow). Accept His instruction and I guarantee, actually, He guarantees, your life will be grander beyond compare. Be glad the story doesn’t end with forgiveness, and rejoice in His second blessing of imputed righteousness.
Prayer
Dear Gracious and Merciful Father, I confess my sinful ways before You and thank You for Your forgiveness. Thanks for not giving up on me and for relentlessly pursuing me, especially when I stray way off course. Thanks for the nudging You give me to get back on track, even though at times I see it as adversity. I now realize You were trying to catch my attention and get me back on the right path toward true peace, freedom, and contentment in Your ways and arms. Please help me be a grateful prodigal son and not be resentful of other prodigals whom You also forgive. I pray this in the name of the One who paid for me, died for me, and pursued me, Jesus Christ. And all God’s children say - AMEN!
The Truth
“And he arose and came to his father. But when he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him. And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight, and am no longer worthy to be called your son.’
“But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring out the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet. And bring the fatted calf here and kill it, and let us eat and be merry; for this my son was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ And they began to be merry.
Luke 15:10-24
Then one of the criminals who were hanged blasphemed Him, saying, “If You are the Christ, save Yourself and us.” But the other, answering, rebuked him, saying, “Do you not even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation? And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this Man has done nothing wrong.” Then he said to Jesus, “Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.” And Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.”
Luke 23:39-43
Thus says God, the LORD, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people on it and spirit to those who walk in it: "I am the LORD; I have called you in righteousness; I will take you by the hand and keep you; I will give you as a covenant for the people, a light for the nations, to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness.

Stepping Stones: God’s Great Puzzle
Transformational Thought
I was blessed to be born into a family of 14 children. After 60 years my brothers and sisters remain my teachers, accountability partners … and my best friends.
When her children where raised and living all across the country, my mother would cherish the times when we could all be together in her home. She prepared meals for days prior to the gatherings. She was in her glory when she took a head count and confirmed all were present.
At one such gathering, I had traveled 800 miles with my four young daughters to be part of this reunion. I noticed on this day that my mother appeared a bit “down”, so I asked her if everything was OK. She reminded me that my brother Jamie wasn’t able to join this gathering. I said flippantly, "What’s the big deal? You've got 13 other children here. Why aren't you satisfied with that?” And then came one of mom’s many treasured lessons.
She said that one missing piece is important because without all the pieces of the puzzle, the picture is incomplete … it ruins the beauty of putting the puzzle on display. She went on, as she always did, to link it to God and his Word.
She explained that like a puzzle, the body of Christ consists of many parts, which together make a complete picture. God has equipped each believer with the particular gifts needed to do what God has called him or her to do. When that person is missing or not following up with their role, an important part of God's plan is missing. The picture is incomplete. Not only does that person miss out on being part of God’s great puzzle, but all the other pieces are affected too and won’t connect as a whole.
Remember, that God has a perfect plan for His body of believers … including you! Like the pieces of a puzzle, each one of us has a specific place, a specific task to do. When every piece is in its God-designed place, the picture is perfect. But when a piece … even one … is missing, the body is incomplete.
Today, take ownership of your place in the puzzle. Are you absent … a piece that dropped off the table? Are some of your edges worn down or jagged … not fitting smoothly into the other pieces? Ask for feedback today from 2 people who are close to you. How can you fit better into God’s puzzle? Your decisions can sabotage God’s perfect fit, so align your decisions with God’s ways. Stop working against God. Working with your God-designed fit will lead to a pleasurable and easier life. Your decision, choose well.
Prayer
Father God, Thank You, Father, for letting me know that I am an important part of Your Grand puzzle. And thank You, Father, for equipping each member of Christ's body, the church, to do what You have called him or her to do. Help me to be aware and sensitive as You lead me to do my part. And help me encourage others to fulfill what You have called them to do. I ask this in the name of the ultimate picture on the puzzle box, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children say – Amen!
The Truth
Just as our bodies have many parts and each part has a special function, so it is with Christ’s body. We are many parts of one body, and we all belong to each other.
Romans 12:4-5

Stepping Stones: “By their fruit you will know them”
Transformational Thought
I suffer from slight claustrophobia. On a recent business flight I got stuck in a middle seat. I’d rather be in a dentist chair than sit in a middle seat on an airplane. And while I haven’t taken my tape measure with me, I am quite sure the airlines take an inch of seat width away from us each year.
While already feeling cramped, this tall gentleman sits in the aisle seat next to me and spreads out … his knee and elbow infringing into my small space. I’m thinking this is going to be a very long flight. I struggle with whether I should confront him about seat etiquette, but as I prayed about it for a moment, and started assessing my options, a much better choice surfaced. Better options do surface when we prayerfully apply self-control to a situation.
I decided to talk with him. He was such a joy to talk with, that I forgot all about being in a middle seat. He was filled with kindness and peace. It’s such a beautiful thing to see God in the face of others. We went back and forth so effortlessly that our flight seemed about 10 minutes long. I never even noticed a hint of physical discomfort even though my physical circumstances were unchanged from my initial assessment.
Our natural inclination to see life from a me-centered perspective in which we constantly need or feel entitled to comfort can lead to a poor, unsettled attitude. That perspective keeps us from opportunities to experience God in ourselves or thru others.
A lot of different religious groups will give you all sorts of ways to know whether or not you have the Holy Spirit. Jesus has one simple answer: "by their fruit you will know them." Paul gives us the definition of holy fruit: LOVE, JOY, PEACE, PATIENCE, KINDNESS, GOODNESS, FAITHFULNESS, GENTLENESS, SELF-CONTROL.
Today, say the holy fruit out loud and ask the Lord to make it true in you. Then take the next step, confess any sin in your life since your last confession. You can even use the “and I confess all my unknown sins and seek to turn from those activities.” Then the Holy Spirit is back on the throne of your heart opening your ears to His voice and guidance. As you follow, this amazing fruit will be yours to taste and enjoy. It will satisfy the desires of your heart. The alternative route, the fruit of the flesh, will rot in your belly and destroy you as well.
Prayer
Father God, Thank You for Your constant presence … thank You for Your answers to my prayers. And thank You, Father, for the gifts of the Holy Spirit. It is through the Spirit I call upon you. Please fill me more with Your Holy Spirit and the all the character You possess. I want to exhibit the qualities of that man You seated next to me on that flight … I want to be like Your child, Jesus, in whose name I pray; and all God’s children say – AMEN!
The Truth
But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law. Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.
Galatians 5:16-25
Delight yourself in the LORD; And He will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the LORD, Trust also in Him, and He will do it.

Stepping Stones: From The Inside Out
Transformational Thought
I know when I was at my lowest point … Essex County jail in Newark, NJ, ripped shirt, cut and bloodied face, bruised and battered body, sitting alone in a cold jail cell … I knew something was really messed up. But my focus was on trying to clean up the outer part of my life, trying to be a better decision-maker to improve my external behavior. A funny thing happened as I started this “makeover.” I realized in order to improve the part of me everyone saw, I had to really examine what was going on inside, in my heart first. Far too often, we focus on our outward self, but true transformation only can happen from the inside. Then it ripples outward.
I realized, at the center of my heart, I was worshipping a lot of insignificant items. You see, when you glorify something or worship it, you give it great weight in your life. The root of the Hebrew word for "glorify" carries the idea of "weight" or "heaviness". An object with great mass that weighs a lot, like the sun, causes gravitational forces that in turn causes other, smaller objects to orbit around it.
Ideally, I worship God. He’s bigger than and weighs more than anything else in my life, and He then determines the orbits of everything else around Him. God at the center, not just intellectually, but evidenced by my attitude in life, the words I speak, and my actions.
We can worship many things. The short list: self, need for control, safety, love, acceptance, importance, competence, money, material things ... or nice things like kids, house, spouse, job, ministry … the list is really endless. But all these lead to the same miserable destination.
No matter what trivial item I choose to worship, the weight I give it in my life will shape and determine the orbits of everything else in my life around it, including God. Listen to me closely! Placing God in a position orbiting around anything else is a formula for disaster. Only God is omnipotent, omniscient, and sovereign over all things. His place is at the center and He orders the orbits of everything else in a great way.
Today, when you make your decisions, examine what is at the center of your heart/universe. Start by asking "What is my greatest need right now?" or "What does my life depend on in this situation?" Then take stock of the downside when you are worshipping anything other than God. Please give God the place and weight He deserves. It transformed my life, and will transform yours. Your decision, choose well.
Prayer
Dear Father, through this renewed intimacy with You, I feel I am being transformed from the inside out. Far too long I have been focusing on the outer person. Now I focus on the inner person. I pray that as I increase my focus on You, my Lord, that You transform me into the one You desire me to be. I yield to you, Lord, I do not resist this change nor do I desire to slow it down or speed it up. I let You set the pace, Lord, for I know Your timing is perfect. I know now that a delay does not mean “no.” I hold your hand Jesus with childlike trust, just as babies hold their parent’s hands as they learn to walk, step by step. Hold my hand, Lord, let me feel and enjoy the tempo of this God-breathed life I am now living. All glory to You, God. Thank You Jesus. Thank You Lord. I pray this in the name of the One who always had God at the center of His heart, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children say - AMEN!
The Truth
And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.
2 Corinthians 3:18
"And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require of you, but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to keep the commandments and statutes of the LORD, which I am commanding you today for your good? Behold, to the LORD your God belong heaven and the heaven of heavens, the earth with all that is in it.

Stepping Stones: The Ultimate Personal Gift Card
Transformational Thought
So many times, we make mistakes. Even big sinful ones. Unfortunately, we often let our fleshly me-centered nature and Satan go to town with these sins to cripple, bind, and blind us. The chains are made of guilt, shame, self-pity, lame excuses, blame-shifting, depression, fear, anxiety, isolation, addiction, insecurity, and the list goes on.
In the Holy Bible, when the crowd was about to stone the woman caught in adultery, they asked Jesus; “What do you say we do?” Jesus started to write in the sand and then said, “Anyone here who has never sinned can through the first stone at her.”
The young men look to the old … the old look into their hearts and they are the first to drop their stones. Jesus then asks the woman if anyone has judged her guilty … she says “no one, Lord”. Then Jesus says; “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.”
How do you think God reacts when you fail? Listen carefully because this is critical: He writes it down … not in the sand or on paper, but on a cross and with Jesus’ blood. His message has three words: “Paid in Full”. He’s given you a prepaid gift card that He paid in full for your penalty. Your response is …. confess your sin and receive His gift.
Hear this. Your personal gift card is not permission to sin … that is a whole different topic. Your gift card is freedom from the condemnation your sin would bring if it weren’t for such a gracious God who is perfectly holy and just, but also perfectly loving and merciful.
Today, redeem your gift card. How? Confession. We don’t use it enough. We sin a bunch, but most only confess, what, once a week … once a day … three times a day? I know I sin more than that, and I bet you do too. Examine your thoughts and actions. When you miss God’s mark, stop and confess missing the mark and celebrate your freedom Christ purchased from the slave market of sin. Your renewed and liberated mind is now freer than ever before to make Godly decisions. Your decision, choose well.
Prayer
Dear Father, I come to You with a thankful heart, so thankful You sent Your son to pay the price for my sin, and thankful for Your gift of forgiveness. What a comfort to think of the words; “Paid in Full”. Better yet, thanks for the eternal life you offer me, free from sin’s devastation. Help me learn from Your wisdom and apply it to my everyday life. Please help me to not judge others’ hearts. Let me be Your disciple, not a judge. Help me to forgive others as You have forgiven me. Focus my eyes on my heart and intentions, and not on those of others. I pray this in the name of the One who paid the ultimate price for my gift card, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children say - AMEN!
The Truth
Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
John 8:12
This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Stepping Stones: Closeness, Not Absence, Makes the Heart Grow Fonder
Transformational Thought
When we were first married, predicting what my wife would order for dinner, knowing how she would react to a surprise, or guessing how she would handle a hurtful situation were works in progress and nearly impossible to predict. Now I know what my wife will order in different restaurants, the movies she likes, what words hurt or encourage her, and how she will react to different people and situations. She know me the same way, although she still has a false belief that someday I will like the vegetables she makes each night at dinner.
How did we get to know each other’s mind so well? It wasn’t easy, although sometimes it was fun. But it took time. In fact, it was the time we spent together paying attention and listening to each other. We were motivated to know each other’s minds, both to love the other person better as well as to help make life more manageable and enjoyable.
God’s intent for us is to be conformed to the likeness of Christ … to develop the mind of Christ. In order for this to happen, I need to know Christ … really understand who He is and how He thinks. How do you really get to know anybody? You spend time with them and pay attention. Once you see how they think and get to know their perspective, you can really appreciate what they love and why they love it. As you spend more time with Jesus, you can’t help but care for Him more, and start to love the things He loves.
Today try to make time to sit quietly in the presence of your Lord. I know how difficult it is to concentrate, but even the effort will please God and bring you peace. Like any skill, the more you practice, the easier it gets, and the better you get at it.
Today, try taking a few minutes after reading the daily devotional to absorb God’s Word. Spend a few minutes imagining how Christ views your toughest situation today. How will you react to the situation by viewing it the way Jesus would?
Prayer
Dear Father, I am sitting quietly in Your presence, waiting and expecting Your blessings. Help make my mind still, Lord, in the midst of all the confusion. Make my mind still like a pool of water, ready to receive whatever thoughts You drop into my mind. Help me rest in Your presence, as I consider the challenges this day presents. Help me keep my focus on You … to keep looking to and communicating with You as we walk through this day together. I pray this in the name of the One with the perfect mind, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children say - AMEN!
The Truth
Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him; do not fret when men succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes.
Psalm 37:7
Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same way of thinking, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same way of thinking, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin,
1 Peter 4:1
The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.
Romans 8:16-17

Stepping Stones: How far are you willing to pedal to church?
Transformational Thought
Early one Sunday morning, I was shopping at the local food store. As I approached the checkout line, I noticed a young man in front of me with a bicycle helmet still on his head; he was carrying two large vegetable platters. I asked him; “Are you planning on carrying all that on your bike?” He tapped his ear letting me know he was deaf. I watched as he double and triple bagged his purchase. As I was checking out I saw him leave the parking lot. He had two bags on one handle grip and one bag on the other. He was in a hurry.
On my way home, about three miles from the store, I saw the young man struggling to ride his bike in a straight line. The handles on one of the plastic bags had broken…and he was trying to hold it in his arm while steering the bike with the other hand. I pulled over to help; when he saw me he was thrilled. With no words spoken he quickly opened the passenger door and placed the vegetable trays on the seat. He pulled out a small pad of paper and wrote the cross streets of his destination. We were headed to his church which was another three miles away.
Met him at the church. He jumped off his bike and ran to get the pastor. It was a church for the deaf and he wanted the pastor to interpret his sign language for me. His name was Tony. He thanked me repeatedly and told me that when the handle broke, he knew God would send help. The church was having a luncheon following worship and the vegetable trays were Tony’s contribution. The pastor told me that Tony lived 12 miles from the church.
I left the church filled with happiness and thankfulness for the experience God had placed in front of me that Sunday morning. I had moved to that new town just one month prior to meeting Tony. I had not attended a worship service since arriving there. Laziness was only excuse. We often put our wants above our real needs, especially our spiritual needs. Then we wonder why we aren’t getting what we need and act so surprised!
A few months following that experience, I met Tony again at a local coffee shop. When he recognized me he gave me a big hug, grabbed my hand and took me to the store window. He pointed to a late model car parked at the curb and then pointed back at himself … Tony had his first car and he was filled with pride and joy.
Today, think about how much effort you put forth to praise God with others. Do you find time for God with only minimal effort, or when it fits into your schedule? Or do you sacrifice some of your “wants” to make regular time with God? How important is it to you to make it to church? How far would you pedal? What are you willing to endure to worship God and meet Him each day?
Prayer
Father God, I thank You for the little and not so little reminders and lessons you place before me for the taking. Today, I have a renewed thankfulness for my ability to see … to hear … to speak. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit, Father, so that I may use all my senses to give you glory and to praise You … to further Your Kingdom here on earth even in ways that I do not understand. I pray this in the name of my savior and teacher, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children say – AMEN!
The Truth
But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin.

Stepping Stones: Unresolved Anger Has Poisonous Roots!
Transformational Thought
When you feel angry with someone or something, do you express your feelings … or do you hold the anger inside? People who bury their anger usually believe they are doing the right thing by appearing calm on the outside. The reality, however, is that unresolved anger can fester and develop into resentment, bitterness, or even depression.
Some people respond to anger by immediately holding it in, but then releasing it or letting it go a short time later without hurting themselves or others. When we handle our feelings like this, the results are often beneficial. But if you tend to hold your anger inside and grow resentful, ask God to help you share your angry feelings with people as they occur. Not in a rage or with unkind words … just an honest expression of your feelings.
The Bible teaches that we shouldn't carry anger overnight. Get it settled before going to bed. Otherwise, it is likely that resentment will begin to grow. We see various passages in the Bible where God and Jesus expressed their anger or displeasure.
As we discussed yesterday, anger is just a God-given warning system … letting us know when a real or potential problem exists. Until you actually do something about the underlying problem, your brain will continue to, thankfully, warn you. Not addressing the problem is what allows anger to grow, fester, and either overflow and come out in harmful ways, or be directed inward leading to real negative self-talk, low self-image, depression, isolation, self-loathing, and a whole list of battles against ourselves.
Perhaps you are already experiencing bitterness because of past unexpressed grievances. The answer … Acknowledge the hurt … Forgive or ask for forgiveness … Then address and solve the original problem your anger warned about. You won’t have to try so hard to let go of the anger … because, when the problem is resolved, that original anger will go away.
Holding on to bitterness can damage your relationship with God, relationships with others, and your peace of mind. It even harms your health, especially your heart, blood pressure, digestive system, and brain chemistry. Being a problem solver, and forgiving and being forgiven can change all that. Ask God … He will help you.
Today, notice if someone is angry. Ask them, “You seem angry or upset. There must be some problem that your anger is warning you about. Can I help you work or solve that problem?” You can ask the same to yourself as well. WITHIN REACH helps you understand and utilize these negative feelings to be a great decision-maker.
Prayer
Dear Father God, forgive me and help me deal with this resentment I have been carrying. Give me the strength and wisdom to acknowledge the hurt, control my anger, identify and solve the underlying issue, and forgive and move forward. Thank You for the wonderful way You designed me. Help me understand that design better so I can be a great steward of my mind and free will by using my emotions in the way You designed. I pray this and all prayers in the name of the best mirror for my eye exam, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children say - AMEN!
The Truth
Look after each other so that none of you fails to receive the grace of God. Watch out that no poisonous root of bitterness grows up to trouble you, corrupting many

Stepping Stones: Make Anger Your Servant…Not Your Master
May 1, 2011
Transformational Thought
Yesterday we talked about how anger isn’t necessarily wrong, dysfunctional, or sinful. But what causes anger? In reality, the answer could be "nothing" around us. We might think that it’s a rude driver, an unfair criticism, or a friend's betrayal. These situations are usually followed by an angry reaction in us. But the anger is actually our own doing. It is actually our own lenses, how we view situations, that precipitate the feeling of anger. And we usually blame others for “making” us feel that way.
During a basketball game, if my team scores a last minute, game-winning basket, I am excited. Someone rooting for the other team experiences the same event, but instead of being excited, will actually be angry, frustrated, and have other negative emotions as well.
The event, a made shot, doesn’t cause the anger. If it did everybody experiencing the event would be angry. You see, the difference, the key ingredient is the lenses we use as we witness or experience the event.
Anger (and all negative feelings) is a great warning system. Anger let’s us know when something is not going right or when potential danger exists. If I am in the woods and see a tiger, I should get angry, sad, worried, frightened. That is a good warning system letting me know something is not safe or right.
When someone insults us or treats us badly, we should get angry. That lets us know a problem exists in this relationship and needs to be addressed. We can choose how to respond. God has given us free will to control our feelings, thoughts, and actions. Will we choose unkind words, or find a way to "get even" … or will we problem-solve and forgive? It's our choice. No matter what our background or the current circumstances, we are responsible for our own behavior and we can’t blame it on our emotions. Unfortunately, we often let our anger rule us, allowing it to become our main decision-making influence. Anger serves us well as a warning system. But anger is a very poor master when we let it become our decision-maker in testy situations.
None of us express our feelings appropriately all the time. But the Bible tells us, For I can do everything with the help of Christ who gives me the strength I need. Philippians 4:13.
Today, notice when you are angry. Stop and thank God for a great warning system. Then look below the anger to the problem and address it. If you don’t, your warning system (anger) will keep on alerting you ‘til the problem is resolved. Let Jesus help you make anger your servant instead of your master by following His attitude, actions, and teachings. WITHIN REACH helps you understand your feelings, their role, how we misuse them, how we can soothe them, and then maximally steward them to our benefit and God’s glory.
Prayer
Dear Father God, thank You so much for my anger, and all my negative feelings. It is awesome to have a warning system to alert me to problems and danger. When I am wronged in some way, help me to choose the Godly response … the one that is pleasing to You. Teach me to control my anger, have patience, problem-solve, and forgive. Thanks for Your soothing Spirit when I am angry. Help me to alllow You in when I feel this pain. I pray this and all prayers in the name of the one who teaches me how to handle all things well, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children say - AMEN!
The Truth
Sensible people control their temper; they earn respect by overlooking wrongs.

Stepping Stones: Anger…Right or Wrong?
Transformational Thought
Anger: right or wrong? The answer is that anger is right … but it can also be wrong. Anger is a God-given emotional energy designed for good. But the way we use and express anger-produced energy can often be dysfunctional and lead to sin … though it doesn't have to. With God's help, we can control the thoughts and actions that come after an event precipitates some angry feelings in us.
The Bible tells of many times when anger was a positive force for achieving good: Moses' anger when the Israelites worshipped idols resulted in their repentance (Exodus 32:19-35); Jesus' anger motivated him to clear blasphemers and abusers from his Father's temple (Luke 19:45-48).
Actually, it seems like God is angry and jealous during half of the Old Testament, as man chronically rejects Him to do his own thing, especially the Israelites. Remember the flood, Tower of Babel, and Sodom and Gomorrah? We know God never sins, so anger itself can’t be a bad thing.
In fact, our anger can be a positive force in many daily situations. Appropriate anger in response to our children's wrong behaviors can motivate us as parents to exert firm but loving discipline. Anger against injustices and wrongdoing in our communities can motivate us to do something positive about the situation. Anger energizes and motivates us to take action when we might be reluctant or passive in areas of struggle or conflict. Tomorrow, we will dig into anger’s best and main role in our lives.
But our anger can also lead to sinful acts of selfishness, unkindness or even aggression. It is our responsibility to use our anger-induced energy in positive ways, even if it's just walking around the block to cool off.
Today, if you experience anger, stop and remember that anger itself isn’t bad. It’s what you decide to do with your anger that will determine a positive or negative outcome. As we find with most situations in life: It's your decision, choose well.
Prayer
Dear Father God, forgive me for the times I have used my anger in sinful ways instead of as a positive force. I know I get irritated easily and for reasons that are me-centered. Help me to control my thoughts and actions and to use my anger in positive ways. Help me to develop eyes that see life more clearly and from a bigger picture view. I pray this and all prayers in the name of Jesus Christ. And all God’s children say - AMEN!
The Truth
Go ahead and be angry. You do well to be angry … but don't use your anger as fuel for revenge. And don't stay angry. Don't go to bed angry. Don't give the Devil that kind of foothold in your life.
Ephesians 4:26-27

Stepping Stones: “Turn To Jesus” Means…
Transformational Thought
How refreshing is this fact … Jesus never changes! When you climbed out of bed this morning, regardless of how you might have felt, or the subtle changes you went through, He had not changed during the night. He is trustworthy and consistent.
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Hebrews 13:8
No matter what your situation, you can turn to Jesus. Turn to Jesus … what does that mean? Obviously not just a physical turning, but something more practical and powerful. Turning our back on the world’s values, ways of measuring success, influences, and decision-making strategies. Turning away from the desires of our flesh.
What choices are you facing? We all make one very key decision in every circumstance we face that determines the outcome of that particular situation … the choice of the lenses I will use to view, experience, and assess this particular event God has allowed to come into my life. Turning toward, understanding, grabbing hold of, and using God’s instruction, forgiveness, grace, promises, and character to form the lenses I use to view each situation God brings my way. This is what I mean by turning toward Jesus. Following Jesus … choosing His way and His lenses, not yours … choosing to receive His love … choosing to trust Him.
If you use His lenses, of course you will still have problems and challenges. Remember the trials Jesus endured? But each one of these opportunities (yes, I called them opportunities) will be easier to navigate in a way that grows you psychologically and spiritually, because it won’t be you who is responding to the adversity. It will be Jesus who lives in you, who will be responding. You will be perceiving and responding in a Christ-like way, having the Mind of Christ.
Today, choose to trust Jesus and do things His way. God has room to work in your life. He will help you move on past the hurt, pain, or failures of the past. He will give you hope for the future. Use lenses based on who He is and what He teaches. Don’t use those distorted lenses with all the muck we’ve accumulated from this world.
Prayer
Dear Father God, I do want to trust You … not just verbalize it, but actually do it in every circumstance. I know You love me and that Your plan for me is the best plan. Please keep me on track … show me the next step … and the next one after that. I know turning to You isn’t physical, it is all mental. Help me turn it all over to You and allow Your perspective to be my lenses. I pray this and all prayers in the name of the one who I choose to follow, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children say - AMEN!
The Truth
Trust God from the bottom of your heart; don't try to figure out everything on your own. Listen for God's voice in everything you do, everywhere you go; he's the one who will keep you on track. Don't assume that you know it all. Run to God! Run from evil!
Proverbs 3:5-7
My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Stepping Stones: Give Me What I Want
Transformational Thought
Jesus taught the parable of the prodigal son in Luke 15:11-32. This young man really showed the classic mentality guiding his decision-making: “I don’t need authority or rules because it’s all about what I need and want … now!” We’ve all been there, even in our adult life.
Deciding to set out on his own, he asked his father for his inheritance and off he went. He proceeded to make more bad choices, squandering his money on wild living. Eventually, the money was gone and he fell to the position of feeding another man’s livestock. He was so hungry, even the food he was feeding the pigs looked good. He thought of home … even his father’s servants were eating better than he was.
“I think I’ll return home and become one of my father’s servants”, he thought. “I don’t deserve more than that, but I believe he’ll hire me.” Several good decisions here: to admit his error, stop blaming others, and most importantly, to face up to and take responsibility for his actions.
The young man’s father was waiting for him and when he saw his lost son coming home, he ran out to meet him with open arms, killed the fat calf, and had a huge party to celebrate his son’s homecoming. This is one of the most powerful messages provided in the Word of God’s incredible love, yearning, and forgiveness for us.
Don’t we often ask God for our inheritance, our salvation and other spiritual assets, and say, “thanks, but I don’t need you anymore. I’m off to satisfy my needs, my way, on my timeline, with no regard for my future growth?” Like the prodigal’s father, God gives us free will, hopes we choose to follow His instruction, but is always waiting with forgiveness and open arms when we come to our senses.
Have you made some bad decisions? Wandered off and squandered your talents or your opportunities to do good? Felt that your way was a better way than God’s? We all have, but don’t continue to wallow in the pig slop of your wrong decisions. Return to Him and enjoy the contentment and celebration of letting Him be your Father, Teacher, Counselor, Coach, and Lord.
Today, many opportunities exist to run with your inheritance and do life on your own. When you get that urge, stop! Count to 5 then say a prayer asking God for wisdom. Make the right choice to follow the stepping-stones to your Heavenly Father and submit to His authority and guidance. Make good decisions, because you have to live with the consequences, or get to reap the rewards. Your choice, choose well.
Prayer
Dear Father God, I’ve made so many mistakes. I know many of the things I’ve done have not pleased You, but I thank You for this assurance of Your love and forgiveness. Please forgive me and take me into Your loving arms. I need You Father … I need more of You. I pray this and all prayers in the name of the one who opened His arms on the cross for me, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children say - AMEN!
The Truth
So he returned home to his father. And while he was still a long way off, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him.
Luke 15:20
