Stepping Stones: The Faster I Go…the Behinder I Get

Transformational Tip
There is a human natural phenomenon; the more behind we are the faster we tend to go. Once we get lost, we start driving faster. When we don’t know what we are talking about we begin to talk faster and louder. My mother taught her children little sayings to register her lessons in our minds. One of her favorite sayings; “The faster I go…the behinder I get.”

During severe storms, sometimes the best action we can take is to drop anchor. An anchor wedges itself deep into the rocks and sand and keeps the vessel and crew from being set dangerously adrift…and possibly crashing into the rocks. In our personal storms and most stressful moments we need to be anchored securely…not in wishes and hopes…but securely in God’s promises.

Satan wants us to run quickly and often blindly toward the many false, hollow, deathtraps masquerading as truth and refuge for the many storms that come our way. God’s promises, character, instruction, and Word ground us to the truth and equip us to be steady in every storm and victorious in any challenge Satan brings and God allows (yes, allows) in our life to grow the mind of Christ in us.

Today, take comfort in knowing that we have a secure anchor when storms threaten us. When you are faced with uncertainty, a storm, discomfort…just STOP and THINK. What does God promise, say, or say to us in these kinds of situations. We may not know what the future holds for us – but we can rest in the knowledge that our souls are safe once anchored to God. Click here to share with the Stepping Stones community your thoughts on the power of anchoring to God’s promise.

Prayer
Dear Father God, I thank You, Father, for being the God of all hope. You know the desires and secret fears of my heart…You know I am in the midst of a terrible storm. I thank You, Father, for all Your promises and Your steadfastness during my storms. Thank You for being my refuge, my rock, my anchor. Today I cast all my hopes and dreams onto You for safekeeping because I trust You. I pray in the name of the one You sent to be my anchor, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children said - AMEN!

The Truth
We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.
Hebrews 6:19
In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name.
Psalm 33:21

Stepping Stones: Use Your Safety Net?

Transformational Tip
In psychiatry residency, I was in the ER, and hospital security called. A guy was in our parking garage and threatening to jump off the 4th level. I ran over, got the info security gathered, then started talking to the depressed man. I worked my way up the garage toward him…he stopped my pursuit with serious threats to jump. I turned to the chief and asked, “When is the big net or pad going to get here, ‘cause I’m not to sure how long he’ll last?” The chief answered, “those nets are just in the movies, there is no safety net.” We are human…and with our humanness come ups and downs. However, God’s promises, love, and presence limits just how far we can go down….protecting you from falling into despair. He is your safety net, but you need to leap in His arms, not away from Him.
Today, keep reminding yourself of these four words; “I am with you.” These words are your safety net. As soon as you realize He is with you and is strong enough to catch you…everything changes. Click here to go to comment how God has been your safety net, or when you have trouble seeing His safety net below… or what God’s revealing in your heart.

Prayer
Dear Father God,
I feel like I am in a free fall. I have fallen into despair. The people and things I have counted on have all let me down. I have put too much stock in them and not enough in You. Help me Father to remember today and always that You are with me…that I do have a safety net…that I do have a way out of despair and depression. Help me Father to not grasp for idols as my safety nets, for I know they only accelerate my fall. Guide me Father with Your council and take me into Your Glory. I pray in Jesus’ ultimate safety, and all God’s people said – AMEN!

The Truth
Yet I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand.
You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory.
Psalm 73:23-24
At my first defense no one came to stand by me, but all deserted me. May it not be charged against them! But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion's mouth.

Stepping Stones: Where Are You the Safest?

Transformational Tip
David was out on the battlefield...mono et mono....face to face against a world champion giant....seems like a dangerous place to me. Actually, it was the best place for him to be because that is where God wanted him....and David knew it. Be willing to go out on a limb if that is where God leads you. If He is leading you there, it is by far the safest place to be. Overly familiar surroundings may feel safe, but they can also lull you into a sleepy, yet dangerous, self-reliance. When out on a limb with your Lord you will stay alert, communicating with Him continually, holding onto His hand in trusting dependence. Follow God wherever He may lead you...and let the shelter of His presence keep you safe. Remember, He knows what the future holds, not you.
Today, ask yourself, "where is God pushing me and I am resisting?" follow it with, "how is that working for me?". Does he want me to...forgive someone...reach out to someone...give up something or someone...be content with something I already have...say something I am afraid to.
Go where He leads, it is the safest place...try it...TODAY!

Prayer
Dear Father God,
You know Lord that I really am not a risk taker...I like to play it safe. However, it is my heartfelt desire to stay close to you...even if that means going out on a limb with and for You. When I feel more self reliant, I confess that these are the times when I tend to forget about You. I pray Lord, that You will help me follow You with confidence.
In Jesus' saving name I pray - AMEN

The Truth
The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way.
Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the LORD upholdeth him with his hand.
Psalm 37:23-24
Thou shalt hide them in the secret of thy presence from the pride of man: thou shalt keep them secretly in a pavilion from the strife of tongues.
Psalm 31:20
Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Hebrews 12:2
