Stepping Stones: One Step at a Time…It’s a Journey

February 17, 2012

Transformational Thought

Some days are so busy, hectic … actually crazy. The world keeps on coming at me … phone calls, requests, glitches in the plan, mail, extra bills, problems, new opportunities … these never seem to slow down. In fact, as I get older, the demands on me come faster. Feelings and perspectives of being so far behind wrap their fingers around my neck easily … slowly choking me.

For some people, there are occasional days when the grip is so tight, things seem hopeless. For others, there’s an endless string of helpless or hopeless days. It’s hard to experience and visualize that these hopeless feelings or days will ever end. Some of the problem is how we measure being “behind” or “ahead.” We often get sucked into the world’s standard or metrics. We have limited control over some of the demands coming our way. So how can we actually measure progress against something we can’t control?

What we do control is how we respond to what comes our way … and that’s how we should measure progress. The answer is to measure how well your response to the demands and twists of life is rooted in being focused on God. He will bring peace, comfort and answers, and walk with you through the busyness and demands. He promises to be your guide along the journey, so measure how well you follow your guide, not how many paths you have to choose from.

Ask God to clear your thinking and remove any obstacles that may exist in your relationship with Him. Perhaps you have made some poor decisions or used bad judgment. God is there to forgive you and help you get back on track. Your past always wants to interfere with your present decisions, but it doesn’t have to. Whether or not it gets in the way is determined by how intentional you are in examining and doing something about it.

Today and every day, remind yourself that life is a journey … a series of steps. Identify 2 paths you take that cause you problems. Remember that you can create the environment for change, but God does the changing. You don’t have to keep going down the same paths that lead to trouble. And the Bible assures us that with Him, all things are possible. Let Him be your guide. WITHIN REACH helps you apply His guidance to every decision you make today. Life is your decision, so choose well.

Prayer
My Father and my Lord, Thank You for being my constant guide. Help me be sensitive … and obedient … to Your guidance. Give me eyes that see and ears that hear Your leading … Your nudging … Your encouragement. Also, when I am off course and on dangerous detours, let me be open to Your will to redirect me back on track even if You need to forcibly push me. I pray this and all prayers in the name of the One You sent to teach me, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children say - AMEN!

The Truth
For that is what God is like. He is our God forever and ever, and he will guide us until we die."
Psalm 48:14

Jesus looked at them and said, "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."

Stepping Stones: Are You Chasing the Right Goals?

Transformational Thought

We all like goals. Happiness, satisfaction, paying the bills on time, playing with the kids after work, getting my work done so I can watch the ballgame, helping people navigate life better. Some goals are quick and simple and some are a bit more complex.

Looking back on my life, many of my accomplishments didn’t really emerge from a well thought-out strategy or process. In fact, I rarely looked at the whole picture before pursuing my “goals.” My goals as a teen and young adult were usually me-oriented and “fixed” one problem, but ultimately gave birth to new problems. The danger was, once I set a goal, I almost become single-minded in my focus to achieve it. I headed off going about it “my way.” I realized that if I wanted to be successful and enjoy life, I really needed to change my strategy. Evaluating my goals to determine if they were healthy and God-honoring had to be the starting point. The second step was developing a new strategy to achieve these new and other more fulfilling goals.

Sounds easy. But we have so many issues working against us. To start, we are taught to be self-sufficient and to solve our own problems, because “we have all the answers.” Mix in our desire to avoid repeating past mistakes, and our fragility in handling any pain or discomfort. Blend in the fact that life happens so quickly that it is hard to step back and get an overall big-picture assessment and strategy in place. This is the recipe that Satan desires. It leads us to make short term, me-centered goals, accomplished in our own strength, and by way of knee-jerk decisions. Wow, sounds like method a teenager uses. The stark reality is that many of us adults do the same thing, and never grow out of this immature way of setting goals and developing strategies.

Today, before going after your next goal (or maybe you are in the midst of pursuing a goal) talk with God about it directly through prayer. Listen as He speaks to your spirit, through friends, family, and circumstances. Ask God for discernment to help you decide if that goal is part of His will … for you … right now. If the answer is yes, then you can pursue that goal with even more confidence. And when you reach that goal, thank God for his help and guidance. Rejoice in what He has accomplished in you. But if the answer is no, let the Holy Spirit search you as you journey. Look honestly at who you are inside and what keeps you from accomplishing goals that are Godly.

Prayer
Dear Father, Pursuing goals comes so naturally to me, it’s almost like second nature. I confess that when a goal grabs my attention, my instinct is to “go for it” without talking it over with You. I realize now that many of my goals are superficial and have nothing to do with pleasing You or doing Your work. I know, Lord, that when I take time to discuss matters with You, my life becomes so much more satisfying. I pray, Lord, that You help me develop goals that are according to Your will … that You become my captain in all the tasks I undertake to accomplish the goal. Help me grow my humility and accept Your direction, will, and timing. I pray that You shine the light of Your presence on all my goals. I pray in the name of the one modeled the ultimate goal, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children say - AMEN!

The Truth
I can do everything through him who gives me strength.
Philippians 4:13

Many are the plans in a man's heart, but it is the LORD's purpose that prevails.
Proverbs 19:21

Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you, who walk in the light of your presence, O LORD. They rejoice in your name all day long; they exult in your righteousness.

Stepping Stones: Run Less, Go Farther

Transformational Thought

When I first started Lighthouse Network, I had a clear goal of what Lighthouse would develop to uniquely help people. My vision of the tactical path to get to that goal was less clear. I asked God to show me the path and so many opportunities, directions, and possibilities came my way. I pursued a lot of them, not knowing which ones would pan out as I was trying to get the ministry off the ground financially and logistically.

Sometimes, I would do so much in a day I really amazed myself. In fact, I would get on a roll for several weeks, thinking, “I’m on fire.” Then a month later, I’d look back and realize, some of that activity was wasted because nothing really resulted from some of those frantic startup efforts.

Getting the most out of what we do … being efficient … makes life so much easier. Ideally, if we only knew now how the future would play out, we would know exactly where to invest – or not invest - our time and energy today.

So the big question is, “How do we know the future … the secret to high efficiency … so we won’t waste effort … but we will maximize our God-given potential?” Answer: Spend time with God and ask Him to show You His will and especially His timeline. He will give you rest and will restore your sense of direction. As you spend more time with God, His peace will settle over your mind, body, and spirit … and the path before you will clear and open up. When you follow His direction, you will save great amounts of time and energy. and ultimately do less but accomplish way more.

Today, take some honest inventory regarding your recent activities. Are you in line with God’s goals and timeline or are you working hard but going on detours and hitting dead ends? Realizing that He knows where He wants me is a great reminder and comfort to me. Take off the conforming lenses of this world, step outside of yourself, and look at yourself as God sees you. What do you see in you? What future does He have for you? What fears or concerns get in the way of pursuing His future for you? Weigh that fear against the angst of not pursuing His will for you. This realization was a major turning point in my life; I think it will affect yours as well. Your decision, choose well.

Prayer
Dear Father, There are so many paths and detours to navigate through each day that I easily lose my sense of direction. And when I lose my sense of direction, I begin spinning in circles as my thoughts flit from one thing to the next. I know my time and energy are precious gifts from You. Help me use them wisely, my Lord. Draw me closer to You … to know Your view of me, the world, and what You have planned for me, so I can do it well and please You. I pray this in the name of my ultimate model and guide, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children say – AMEN!

The Truth
Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established.

And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.
Exodus 33:14

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

Stepping Stones: Friends or Fools?

Transformational Thought

As I look back over my childhood, I recall my mother paying close attention to those I selected as friends. If she saw me making friends with someone she thought was not a healthy relationship, she would gently wean me away from that person. She would tell me that God would always provide two new great friends for every not-so-good-friend that I lost. Not sure where that verse is in the Bible.

Today's scripture makes it clear that our choice of friends plays a vital role in our lives. This is especially true for teenagers. They are no longer children, but they are not yet adults in judgment either. To fit in, feel valued, and develop their “own” identity separate from their parents, or to figure out who they are, teens tend to pick up or adopt many of the behaviors, values, and characteristics of the people they are observing and hanging around.

This is a difficult age for teens. They don't understand their limitations and underestimate or fail to recognize many dangers. Parents will allow them to make many more independent decisions than in the past, but must still enforce some boundaries when there are activities or relationships that could cause their teens harm.

Recognize the peer pressure that will be placed on your teen, and offer alternative answers. Do not "put down" your child's friends, but rather encourage godly relationships.

Church attendance is very important and should not be optional. Church youth groups can be invaluable sources of godly friends and activities. Encourage your teen to take part in these. Strongly encourage involvement in extra-curricular activities. Sports, band, specialty clubs, dance or music lessons are all possibilities for healthy involvement.

If you are having a hard time wrapping your mind around why our kids crumble and do such stupid things and are easily influenced by their peers, just look at how many adults act. Trying to keep up with the Joneses, playing games and politics in the workplace, gossiping, influencing others to engage in inappropriate work practices, having affairs at work. We adults struggle with discerning friends from fools and we often don’t model what we preach.

Today, focus on being involved as a family in godly activities with godly people who have kids the same age as your teenager. Examine the friendships and the relationships that influence your behavior. Are you proud of what you are doing? Don't have ungodly relationships…your teen will notice the hypocrisy. Your decision, choose well.

Prayer
My dear heavenly Father, Please lead my children, regardless of their ages, into relationships that will influence them in a positive way. Give me wisdom to guide them and courage to protect them. Help me love the friends I do not approve and remember to pray for them, also. I pray this in the name our perfect friend, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children say - AMEN!

The Truth
Become wise by walking with the wise; hang out with fools and watch your life fall to pieces.
Proverbs 13:20

Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates his brother is still in the darkness. Whoever loves his brother lives in the light, and there is nothing in him to make him stumble.

Stepping Stones: Carsick on Your Spiritual Journey?

Transformational Thought

We were driving from the Isle of Skye to the Mull of Kintyre in Scotland. Beautiful scenery, driving through the Highlands and seeing some waterfalls and lush green landscape alongside the windy, scenic roads. Stopping for fish and chips at a small fishing town. Everything on this 7-hour trip was going great until we added a PB&J snack. Nine year old Dominique got so carsick she vomited all over the back seat and on Nicole. First time she ever threw up.

Have you ever been carsick? Weird feeling. The primary reason for carsickness is that as the car races along, passengers are not able to focus on a solid object. But who is the one person in a car that never gets sick? The driver. Why are drivers protected? They are focused on the road ahead, looking intently at the solid objects outside the car that aren't bouncing and turning. They have a good sense of where the horizon is. Their vision, their perspective, their worldview is grounded in something unchanging – the horizon.

In carsickness, the main problem is the conflicting data between our eyes, our inner ear motion receptors, and the motion receptors throughout our body in the tissues below our skin. When we intentionally walk, all 3 of these areas are in sync and focused on a common motion task, therefore, motion sickness doesn’t exist.

The key is in the word focus. When we are focused … intentionally walking forward and not distracted in several different directions … not confusing our inner systems, no motion sickness occurs. Are we focusing on Christ … who never changes … or are we focusing on the circumstances that keep turning and swirling, and change with each wind that blows? Focusing on Jesus will bring much-needed direction and get rid of some of the motion sickness we experience on our spiritual journey.

Today, when you are faced with adversity, on what truths or principles will you focus? Are they from the grounded, tested truths of the Bible? Or are they flimsy, vacillating, imitations from this world? Are you focusing too much on external circumstances instead of your inner relationship with God? Feeling carsick on your spiritual journey is a warning sign that you aren’t focused on the absolute truth. Re-orient and focus back on the cross and God’s promises, and bring this focus to those trouble areas. WITHIN REACH will teach you skills and self-assessment tools to keep you focused on God in all your everyday activities and decisions.

Prayer
My Father and my Lord, I know I have been focusing too much on problems instead of on Jesus. And as the circumstances around me change, I have become confused and discouraged … I am almost constanly “car sick.” I am bouncing from one crutch to another, looking for answers in so many wrong places. Help me fix my eyes on Jesus. I pray this and all prayers in the name of the one who focused only on You, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children say - AMEN!

The Truth
Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Stepping Stones: He Wants Us to Travel

Transformational Tip
We are born lost, spiritually lost…in a terrible place…the state of insecurity, inadequacy, isolation, overwhelmed. We long to be in a different place…peace, love, joy, security, intimacy. We need to go on a trip. In today’s scripture reading, God tells us that He goes before us. God’s imagery of going before us clearly lets us know that He desires us to go on a journey...with Him as our guide and leader…He calls us by our name.
For our journey, unfortunately, we make some poor choices regarding some important elements. Our map is random, we use the world’s strategy, our destination is me-centered or material, and we demand to be our own guide. Instead, we need to use the Bible as for our map and strategy, God to be our guide, and the mind of Christ as our destination. Our journey is of our mind, heart and Spirit. The pot of gold at the end of the journey – the fruit of the Spirit!
But, the Christian life is a dangerous pilgrimage to the Promised Land…Satan is always lurking. So, we need the power and wisdom of the Holy Spirit…the power and comfort of prayer…and the protection and counter attack of the armor of God.

Today, imagine yourself standing at a crossroad with two paths before you; one is your current path, the other is the journey your Lord is inviting you to take. Take and intentional step on the next stepping stone on God’s path, listen to His guidance, and resist Satan’s deception. Click here to share with the Stepping Stones community your thoughts on “traveling.”

Prayer
Dear Father God, I thank You for Your gift of going before me. I like to have a map when I travel, to know exactly where I am going…how long it will take me to get there. When I look at the road ahead that You call me to travel with You, all I see is a bend in the road with the road disappearing. Help me, Father, to keep my eyes on You, knowing that You are my map and guide. Help me to encourage others to following You on this journey. I pray in the name of the one who died so I might be free to travel, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children said - AMEN!

The Truth
I will go before you and make the crooked places straight; I will break in pieces the gates of bronze and cut the bars of iron. I will give you the treasures of darkness and hidden riches of secret places, that you may know that I, the LORD, Who call you by your name, I am the God of Israel.
Isaiah 45:2-3
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

Stepping Stones: "You Have No Idea..."

Transformational Tip
Several phrases people frequently use just send me through the ceiling. As an example; when someone inserts “to tell you the truth”, “to be totally honest…”, or “can I be totally frank with you?” My initiative reaction is to ask; “so does this mean that up to this point you haven’t been telling me the truth?” Another example is when someone begins a sentence with “You have no idea…” I always find that statement so presumptuous, so condescending. At the risk of irritating you, let me use this phrase; “You have no idea who you really are!” There…I’ve said it! Now hear me out.
Paul tells the Corinthians we have a veil over our face. Our faith in Christ as our Savior and acceptance of His death for our sin, takes that veil away. But, we are so accustomed to looking at ourselves through a veil, we find it hard to clearly see Christ’s glory in us. So, we adopt other veils to get us back in our “comfort zone”. One of those veils we try is this whole Christian thing. Trying not to sin. Cleaning ourselves up on the outside. Doing good deeds. Going to church. Being nice…putting that dollar in the collection basket. When we look in the mirror, we cannot see who we really are because of these veils that hangs over our faces…created by us, or provided by Satan to deceive us about who we really are in Christ. We truly have no idea who we really are. But this veil remains. Jesus says it so clearly; it’s about believing and receiving…it is about healing your heart, setting it free, restoring you to the glory God intends for you. It’s about lifting that veil. I fear a religious fog has tried to veil us, placing us under some sort of spell or amnesia, to keep us from truly coming alive…to keep us from really knowing who we are and who God intends us to be. In today’s scripture reading, Paul said it is time to take that veil away.
Today, take the veil off…bringing freedom, transformation and glory to your life … “beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord.” Ask yourself what is interfering with you reflecting Christ to yourself and to others. Why? Identify one step you can take today to stop wearing your veil. Click here to share with the Stepping Stones community your thoughts on “You have no idea…”

Prayer
Dear Father God,
I want to know who I am. I want to lift the veil that distorts and blocks my vision. I want to see the reflection of Your glory when I look into the mirror. I want to see my sinfulness more clearly. I want to like…no, I want to love what I see and who I am. You are the Spirit, and where You are I know I will find liberty and freedom. I pray in the name of the one who died so I might lift the veil that hangs over my face, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children said - AMEN!

The Truth
Nevertheless when one turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.
Corinthians 3:16-18

Stepping Stones: Out On A Limb

Transformational Tip
As a young boy I always had a fascination with climbing trees; especially apple trees. I’d climb up, pick the apples, and then throw them down to my brothers. However I could never get the really good apples, for they always seemed to be hanging out on a limb. I would never go out on a limb, always played it safe. Fear of falling kept me off the limbs. I think sometimes God asks us to go out on that limb. Just like the apple tree, juiciest rewards in life are out on the end of the limb. Playing it “safe,” not going out on a limb, is sometimes how Satan wants you to engage life. So keep your eyes on your Lord as you step out in faith. Grab His hand tightly as you edge your way, following Him out onto that limb. Since He goes before you, you can keep your eyes on Him as you step out in faith. Soon you will arrive at a resting place. While gripping His hand, look toward the horizon. Enjoy the view from this tree-top perspective. You are actually safer here…out on this limb with your Lord…than you would be on the ground. Overly familiar surroundings feel safer, but they also may lull you into a kind of sleepy self-reliance; and that’s when we tend to forget about the need for our Father.

Today, when doing the right thing feels uncomfortable, envision the scenario you just read and enjoy the activity and view in a new way. In this new challenging environment (out on a limb), you will be more alert and not so quick to let go of His hand. Click here to share with the Stepping Stones community your thoughts on going out on the limb.

Prayer
Dear Father God, You are the author and finisher of my faith. I want to follow You wherever You lead me…even if it’s out on a limb. I pray, Father, that You will help me follow You with confidence rather than with fear; for I know Father that wherever You lead me is the safest place I could be. I bring all my fears to You, Father, for I now know that fears not dealt with tend to grow and magnify themselves. I pray in the name of the Ultimate Life Guide and Protector, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children said - AMEN!

The Truth
You shall hide them in the secret place of Your presence from the plots of man; You shall keep them secretly in a pavilion from the strife of tongues.
Psalm 31:20
The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD, And He delights in his way.
Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; For the LORD upholds him with His hand.
Psalm 37:23-24
Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Stepping Stones: Do Less But Accomplish More

Transformational Tip
Getting the most out of what we do...efficiency...makes life easier. If we only knew ahead of time how the future would play out, we would know exactly what relationships, activities, and situations, to invest or not invest our time and energy into. How do we know the future... the secret to high efficiency....how to not waste effort...maximize our God-given potential.
Answer: Spend time with God and He will give you rest and will restore your sense of direction. As you spend more time with God, His peace will settle over your mind, body and soul...and the path before you will be more clear and open up. When you follow His directions, you will save great amounts of time and energy and ultimately do less but accomplish way more.
Today, spend time with God...rest in His power and that He knows where He wants you. Step outside of you and look at yourself as God sees you. What do you see in you? ....your future?

Prayer
Dear Father,
There are so many paths and detours to navigate through each day that I easily lose my sense of direction. When I lose my sense of direction I begin spinning in circles while my thoughts flit from one thing to the next. I know my time and energy are precious gifts from You; help me use them wisely my Lord. Draw me closer to You... to know Your view of me, the world, and what You have planned for me, so I can do it well and please you. I pray this in the guiding name of Jesus - AMEN

The Truth
Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established.
Proverbs 16:3
And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.
Exodus 33:14
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
Ephesians 2:10
