Transformational Thought
If you have been a Stepping Stones regular, you know my earlier life was filled with many victories, as well as many defeats. When God caught my attention and I started following Him, God brought several mature Christian men into my life who gave me some spiritual coaching. They taught me how to lean on them. During my time of weakness I was able to prop up myself with the strength God gave me through them.
The ultimate lesson came while I was sick - so weak that I couldn’t eat or drink for 2 weeks due to Hepatitis A. Some of these guys came over to do my yard work. Embarrassed that someone was doing my job, I slowly dragged myself out in my robe and tried to shoo them away. My good friend Les, the leader of our small group, said, “Quit being a jerk. We are here for you, but more importantly here to serve God. Quit robbing us of the blessing we get from serving God and you, and stop acting so proud. Accept God’s love through us and go back in the house and rest.” Wow, that stopped me in my tracks.
Maturing Christians who are growing in their relationship with the Father gradually mature in their ability to lean. Leaning is not something that comes easily to many of us, especially grind-it-out guys. Our stubborn independence causes us to view leaning as a sign of weakness. However, the Bible makes it clear that leaning is one of the marks of a real Christian.
In our growing up years, we were learning to lean, but we made an almost fatal mistake. We leaned on the wrong support. We leaned on a fellow 9 year old, or another teenager, or a parent who didn’t give our leaning the serious attention it needed. Or we may have leaned on a job, a college, a sport, a drug, sex, food, or “you fill in the blank.” When we got hurt, let down or ignored we learned, “I can’t lean on any one but myself if I really want my needs to be met.”
Maturing Christians will break that pattern and become vulnerable again. We begin by leaning away from the conventional wisdom of self-reliance and learn to lean on God and trust in His wisdom and goodness. As we begin to lean on God instead of ourselves, we soon realize that His way is always the best way. Christians lean into God's divine purpose. The greatest desire of Christians should be to accomplish God's purpose in our lives, as this is what truly glorifies Him and fulfills us the most.
Christians also lean on each other. Independence is not always admirable. However, interdependence is a biblical principle that carries the idea of mutually healthy dependence. The Trinity is the ultimate picture of interdependence. Christians should understand the value of community … engage in it … and contribute to it. This is what the term “Christian Fellowship” is all about. Showing God to each other and helping each other grow to become more Christ-like.
Today, identify an area of your life where you are leaning on the wrong support. Why are you leaning on that? Is it really supporting you now, and for the long run? Analyze what is keeping you from leaning on God. Begin leaning on God. Be willing to accept help from other people whom God has placed into your life. Stop carrying the "I can do it myself" mentality to an extreme. Life is your decision, so choose well.
Prayer
Dear Father God, Thank You for the blessing of safe people that I can lean on. I pray, Father, that You will help me to listen to Your voice in everything I do. Teach me to accept help from You and from the people You send to me. I pray that pride not get in my way and that I would be willing to ask for help, and more importantly, to follow Godly wisdom as I get it. I pray this and all prayers in the name of the One who depended on You, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children say - AMEN!
The Truth
Trust God from the bottom of your heart; don't try to figure out everything on your own. Listen for God's voice in everything you do, everywhere you go; He's the one who will keep you on track. Don't assume that you know it all. Run to God!

Stepping Stones: Bad News/Good News
January 12, 2012
Transformational Thought
Do you sometimes find it difficult to manage your thoughts, attitudes, behaviors, or emotions? Do you persist in a destructive habit even though you know you are hurting yourself or those you love? Do you have patterns or defects you want to correct, but find it too difficult? On New Year’s or your birthday, did you think of some areas of your life that you want to improve or remove over the next year?
If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, you are not alone. In fact, if you answered no to all of them, you are lying or in denial, as none of us are perfect in any, let alone all areas of life. Whether we know it or not, we all have operated in a self-destruct mode at some time in our lives … for some of us it’s been this way most of our adult lives. Perhaps you have tried to do right … to change. For a while, things might get better, and then you find yourself pretty close to where you started.
Well, what do you want first, the bad news orthe good news?Myself, I like the bad news first, so … The bad news: you can't make these kinds of changes by yourself. The good news: that's OK because you don't have to do it by yourself. God is standing by to help you. He is inviting you to turn your problem over to Him. He wants you to know these are not person-sized problems … they are God-sized problems. He loves you, wants to save and sanctify you. He has the power to overcome anything you are or can imagine struggling with. And he has the ultimate strategy and power to make it all happen.
Satan wants to trick us into thinking we don’t need God, that the world can do it for us. Our own natural nature, our selfish me-centered nature, leans toward trusting only myself and doing it all under my own power. Both of these strategies leave out God and only lead to a slow and tortuous inner death.
Today, take the beginning steps to overcoming any destructive pattern in your life: admit you have the problem; admit you cannot correct the problem by yourself; tell God you are sorry for what you have been doing and that you truly want to change. Then trust Him to help you. Seek guidance about how to incorporate Christ, the Holy Spirit, and the Holy Bible into your everyday decision-making. WITHIN REACH has accomplished this miracle for me, and it can for you too. You didn’t get this way overnight, so things may not change overnight. But you will be developing the skills and disciplines to start moving in the right direction. God will be with you throughout the process. Your decision, so choose well.
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father and Ultimate Healer, Sometimes I feel so alone and helpless. Please bring Your Holy Word to my mind at those times. Help me remember that You are always with me, and that with You, all things are possible. Your instruction in the Holy Bible is so powerful … it can actually renew my mind and set me free. Help me to apply Your teachings and trust Your promises, instead of trusting my understanding and self-made instruction book. I pray this in the name of the One You sent who is the Good News, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children say - AMEN!
The Truth
I know the Lord is always with me. I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me.
Psalm 16:8
With Him, all things are possible
Philippians 4:13
Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding

Stepping Stones: Does Controlling My Life Really Protect Me?
January 10, 2012
Transformational Thought
The Great American Way…Capitalism…the Land of Independence...Self-Sufficiency…Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. We are raised and taught, “take care of yourself, don’t be a burden on others,” “It’s the weak who are dependent on something or somebody else,” and “I want to do life on my own terms in my own way!”
If you were ever a victim of abuse of any kind, you certainly felt you had no control in the situation…whether it was mild, like ridicule or harshness from your parents, or ranged to any other form of mistreatment like neglect in a dating relationship, or misuse of power by someone in authority. Unfortunately, for some, the abuse might have been extreme or even violent…bullying, sexual coercion while dating, mugging or physical assault, sexual molestation, or even rape. Unfortunately, none of us escape all mistreatment.
We associate the abuse with losing control, so we make a subliminal promise to ourselves never to be in that dependent position again. We then try to control most situations…including every relationship in our lives...to make sure our vulnerability never answers the door when potential abuse knocks. An important downside of this self-protective strategy is we now have a hard time being vulnerable to, and dependent on God and His loving but controlling hand in our lives.
So, we rebel against His instruction and control. I know. I was hardheaded about turning control of my life over to Him, letting myself be vulnerable to someone…and although I am much better, I still struggle with it. But in the past, I tried being independent, controlling all areas of my life. It landed me in jail, with alcohol and a fear of other’s opinions and feelings as my masters.
None of us can be free to become all we were meant to be until we recognize that God is in control…that He loves us and wants to care for us. We are fooling ourselves when we think we can successfully make it through this life on our own. In reality, we need to lean on Him…on His wisdom, strength, love, character, promises…and especially, on His son, Jesus Christ.
Today, assess whether you are in control of your life, or whether God is. Remember, this man you read about, Jesus, loves you. He is inviting you to put your hands in His and let Him guide you and help you through all circumstances of life…regardless of what ever has happened in the past. Stop trying to figure out everything on your own. Stop trying to forge through life depending upon your own strength and understanding. Let Jesus love you. Let Him help you reach your full potential and accomplish all the good things He has called you to do. He actually died for you…for the simple reason that He loved His Father…AND YOU! Your decision, so choose well.
Prayer
Dear Father, forgive me for thinking I could make it through life on my own. I need Your help and Your guidance in everything I do. Help me to stop trying to control everything…help me to listen to Your voice…to obey You…to trust You. I have been leaning on myself and what the world offers, and my hole only gets deeper. Thanks for loving me more than I love me, and for showing me how much You really love me by taking my penalty and place on the cross. I pray this in the name of the One who was sent to take my place, and who teaches and guides me, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children say - AMEN!
The Truth
Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil.
Proverbs 3:5-7
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities--all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

Stepping Stones: Addictions - the Stone Gods
Transformational Thought
Yesterday we introduced our Lighthouse Network spiritual and Biblical definition for addiction. Our description then opened some eyes and caused some head scratching by showing how we all suffer from an addiction. If you missed yesterday’s devotional, click here to go to our blogsite and read it now. Today is an experiential description of addiction.
As kids, none of us set out with the goal of feeling trapped in an addiction. Sadly, after a slow and insidious beginning, that is the ultimate end for all addictive behaviors: enslavement. Addictions make us slaves to that object. Some people can feel the enslavement very specifically. Others are fooled into thinking they aren’t enslaved, because the takeover is so subtle and usually occurs over a big chunk of time. The reality is, we easily become slaves to the objects that soothe us. Being “trapped” is exactly where Satan wants us. He cleverly disguises our addiction objects. Because we aren’t stupid, and really don’t want to be slaves, Satan has to be subtle and crafty to help us progress down the enslavement pathway.
People can find themselves obsessively and compulsively hooked on almost anything. The object of desire for an addict is always staring them right in the face. For some it’s using food as a source of comfort. For others it can be substances, control, relationships, anger, spending, Facebook, the phone, sports, TV, anxiety, panic attacks, guilt, fear, hobbies, money, power (think parent tactics), a loud and intimidating voice, the silent treatment, avoidance … man, the list is endless. Just think of how many times these responses or objects got you into trouble, yet you still do them. That is enslavement.
People caught up in an addiction have replaced God with an idol. They have found something that promises a good time, makes things better or easier to deal with, or makes the pain or struggle go away. What entered life as an understanding resource, tool, friend, or savior quickly became a cruel master. The problem with idols is that they are chosen because we want what we think they can give us, not because of what they actually are. We believe that they will do something for us, so we give them our devotion. But they are actually stone gods … illusions and lies that give us a little, but then trap us by interfering with the full, long term relief that going to God will actually bring in-full.
Today, know and spread the news that for believers there is great hope. We are not alone in our addictions. No matter where we are, the Holy Spirit is within us and intercedes for us before God. When you are uncomfortable emotionally, notice what you turn to for soothing. Today’s scripture tells us that we are “crucified with Christ, therefore we no longer live, but it is Christ who lives within us.” This is the truth: we do not struggle alone. Christ is with us, and in Him we are free. When we are focused on Him, we can find the strength we need for freedom and victory over all our addictions. Your decision, so choose well. WITHIN REACH will help you break these patterns by applying the Bible in practical ways. Check it out for yourself or for those you know who need help breaking some patterns.
Prayer
Dear Father God, Today more than ever I need You to live up to that divine title of Savior. I need You to save me from myself, my addictions, my fear, my burdens. I am so tired of trying to do it on my own. I am weary and exhausted, stressed out and alone. Come to me and save me. Free me from my fears and help me to hold onto You, so that my life, dreams, and hopes can be renewed. I pray this in the name of the One whom You sent to set me free from all enslavement, Jesus Christ; And all God’s children say - AMEN!
The Truth
The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me because the Lord has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners,
Isaiah 61:1
I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.

Stepping Stones: From Turtle to God
May 26, 2011
Transformational Thought
I was on vacation last week and had the privilege of witnessing one of the coolest and most hilarious sights ever. We were at a Myrtle Beach high-rise with a “lazy river” where you could leisurely ride around on an inner tube. Well, my 10 y.o., GiGi, decorated a little turtle and entered “Kevin” in the turtle race in the lazy river. Twelve noon was post time. The activities director dumped about 50 decorated plastic turtles into the river … and the race was on!
The excitement of the kids was so infectious that many of us parents got caught up in the “for all the marbles” turtle race on this muggy, 93-degree day. Even innocent bystanders, the people with no turtles in the race, were excited and interested in the outcome. People were hootin’ and cheerin’, running around the river to see where their turtle was … it was hilarious. I actually shouted to another excited father, “O baby, competition, you gotta love it!”
I’ve loved sports, ever since I could remember. Sports have clear goals, structure, expectations, excitement, winning, second and third chances, attention, escape from reality, rewards, measurable advancement, teamwork, camaraderie, and so much more if you really excel at sports. I was blessed to have many successful and exciting experiences in athletics.
But you see, even though sports were a positive activity in many ways for me, I also developed a dependency, an addiction, for them. I turned to them when I felt low, insecure, lonely, inadequate in another area, or when I was confused or overwhelmed, especially socially. Sports brought me relief from my discomfort. But unbeknownst to me, this really stunted my spiritual growth, because I should have been turning to God and His Holy Bible instead.
God wants you to be all His. Once you Believe in Christ as your Savior, and then Receive the invitation from God to have an eternal relationship with Him, He works constantly to wean you off all other dependencies. A big part of Becoming a real disciple of Christ is letting your security rest in Him alone … not in other things, people, or circumstances.
Today, reflect on some positive or stress-relieving activities in your life. Have you started to rely too much on them? Activities like work, food, hobbies? Or your spouse, kids, intellect, problem-solving skills? Yes, the list is endless. Do you turn to them before you turn to God? Turn to Him first today. He forms the foundation of your happiness first and then uses the other activities to provide satisfaction and fulfillment to help you grow.
Prayer
Dear Father, I thank You for all that I have. I thank You for the security You provide for my life. Day by day, this physical world becomes a more frightening place, such an insecure place. I accept You as my God and my Savior. But I humbly admit to You that I am not yet weaned from other dependencies. Help me let go of them as I grasp more firmly to You. I pray this in the name the one who depended solely on You, Jesus Christ – and all God’s children say, AMEN!
The Truth
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
James 1:17
So I became great and surpassed all who were before me in Jerusalem. Also my wisdom remained with me. And whatever my eyes desired I did not keep from them. I kept my heart from no pleasure, for my heart found pleasure in all my toil, and this was my reward for all my toil. Then I considered all that my hands had done and the toil I had expended in doing it, and behold, all was vanity and a striving after wind, and there was nothing to be gained under the sun.
Ecclesiastes 2:9-11

Stepping Stones: Leaning Is Powerful
Transformational Thought
A few years back I found myself in a very bad and difficult place. My world was crumbling around me. God brought two mature Christian men into my life, one new friend and one old, and they taught me how to lean on them. I was able to prop myself up with the strength God gave me through them in my time of extreme weakness.
Maturing Christians, those growing in their relationship with the Father, gradually mature in their ability to lean. Leaning is not something that comes easily to many of us, especially guys. Our stubborn independence causes us to view leaning as a sign of weakness. However, the Bible makes it clear that leaning is one of the marks of a real Christian.
In our growing up years, we started to learn to lean, but we made an almost fatal mistake. We leaned on the wrong support. We leaned on a fellow 9 yo, or another teenager, or a parent that didn’t give our leaning the serious attention it needed, or on a job, a college, a sport, a drug, sex, food, a “you fill in the blank.” When we got hurt, let down or ignored we learned, “I can’t lean on any one else but myself for my needs to really be met.”
So breaking that pattern and willing to be vulnerable again, growing Christians lean away from the conventional wisdom of self-reliance and learn to lean on God and trust in His wisdom and goodness. As we begin to lean on God instead of ourselves, we soon realize that His way is always the best way. Christians lean into God's divine purpose. As Christians, our greatest desire should be to accomplish God's purpose in our lives, as this is what truly glorifies Him.
Christians also lean on each other. Independence is not always admirable. However, interdependence is a biblical principle that carries the idea of mutually healthy dependence. Christians understand the value of community … engage in it … and contribute to it. This is what the term “Christian Fellowship” is all about. Showing God to each other and helping each other grow to become more Christ-like.
Today, identify an area of your life where you are leaning on the wrong support. Why? Is it really supporting you now, and for the long run? Analyze what is keeping you from leaning on God. Begin leaning on God. Be willing to accept help from other people that God has placed into your life. Stop carrying the "I can do it myself" mentality to an extreme. Your decision, choose well.
Prayer
Dear Father God, Thank You for placing people in my life, safe people that I can lean on. I pray, Father, that You will help me to listen to Your voice in everything I do. Teach me to accept help from You and from other people You send to me. I pray that pride won't get in my way and I'll be willing to ask for help, and more importantly follow Godly wisdom as I get it.
Run to God!

Stepping Stones: Does Controlling Life Really Protect Me?
Transformational Thought
The Great American Way…Capitalism…the Land of Independence...Self-Sufficiency…Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. We are raised and taught, “take care of yourself, don’t be a burden on others, it’s the weak who are dependent on something or somebody else.” I want to do life on my own terms in my own way!
If you were ever a victim of abuse of any kind, you no doubt felt you had no control in the situation…whether it was mild, like ridicule or harshness from your parents, or ranged to any other form of mistreatment like neglect in a dating relationship, or misuse of power by someone in authority. For some, unfortunately, the abuse might have been extreme or even violent…bullying, sexual coercion while dating, mugging or physical assault, sexual molestation, or even rape. No one has escaped all mistreatment.
We associate the abuse with being out of control, so we make a subliminal promise to ourselves never to be in that dependent position again. So then we try to control most situations…including every relationship in our lives...to make sure our vulnerability never answers the door when potential abuse knocks. One of the downsides of this self-protective strategy is that we now have a hard time being vulnerable to and dependent on God and His controlling hand in our lives.
So, we rebel against His instruction and control. I know. I was hardheaded about turning control of my life over to Him, letting myself be vulnerable to someone…and I still struggle with it. But in the past, I tried being independent, controlling my life…it landed me in jail, with alcohol and a fear of other’s opinions and feelings as my masters.
None of us can be free to become all we were meant to be until we recognize that God is in control…that He loves us and wants to care for us. We are fooling ourselves when we think we can make it on our own through this life. We need to lean on Him: on His wisdom, strength, love, character, promises…and His son, Jesus Christ.
Today, assess whether you are in control of your life, or whether God is. Remember, this man you read about, Jesus, loves you. He is inviting you to put your hands in His and let Him guide you and help you through all circumstances of life…regardless of what ever has happened in the past. Stop trying to figure everything out on your own. Stop trying to forge through life depending on your own strength and understanding. Let Jesus love you. Let Him help you reach your full potential and accomplish all the good things He has called you to do. He actually died for you…for no reason other than He loved His Father…AND YOU!
Prayer
Dear Father, forgive me for thinking I could make it through life on my own. I need Your help and Your guidance in everything I do. Help me to stop trying to control everything…help me to listen to Your voice…to obey You…to trust You. I have been leaning on myself and what the world offers and my hole only gets deeper. Thanks for loving me more than I love me, and for showing me how much You really love me by taking my penalty and place on the cross. I pray this in the name of the One who was sent to take my place, and teach and guide me, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children say - AMEN!

Yesterday we introduced our Lighthouse Network spiritual and Biblical definition and description of an addiction. Today is an experiential description. If you missed yesterday’s, click here to read it now.
Nobody caught in an addiction wanted to feel trapped by it when it first started. Sadly, that is the ultimate end for all addictive behaviors: enslavement.
Addictions make us slaves to that object. Some people can feel the enslavement very specifically. Others are fooled into thinking they aren’t enslaved, because the takeover is so subtle and usually occurs over a big chunk of time. The reality is, we are a slave to the object that soothes. Being “trapped” is exactly where Satan wants us. He cleverly disguises our addiction objects because we aren’t stupid, and really don’t want to be slaves.
People can find themselves obsessively and compulsively hooked on almost anything. The object of desire for an addict is always staring them right in the face. For some it’s using food as a source of comfort. For others it can be substances, control, relationships, anger, spending, Facebook, the phone, sports, TV, anxiety, panic attack, guilt, fear, hobbies, money, power (think parent tactics), a loud and intimidating voice, the silent treatment, avoidance…man, the list is endless.
People caught up in an addiction have replaced God with an idol. They have found something that promises a good time, makes things better or easier to deal with, or makes the pain or go away. What entered our life as an understanding friend and savior quickly became a cruel master. The problem with idols is that they are chosen because we want what we think they can give us. We believe that they will do something for us, so we give them our devotion. But they are actually stone gods…illusions and lies that give us a little, but then trap us by interfering with the full, long term relief that going to God will bring.
Today, know and spread the news that for believers there is great hope. We are not alone in our addictions. No matter where we are, the Holy Spirit is within us and intercedes for us before God. When you are uncomfortable emotionally notice what you turn to for soothing.
WITHIN REACH will help you break these patterns by applying the Bible in practical ways. Check it out for yourself or those you know who need help breaking some patterns.
I pray this in the name of the one whom You sent to save me, Jesus Christ; And all God’s children say - AMEN!
The Truth
Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.
John 3:18
I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.

Stepping Stones: From Turtle to God
Transformational Tip
I was at the beach last week and observed one of the coolest and most hilarious sights. We were at a Myrtle Beach high-rise with a “lazy river” you could leisurely ride around on an inner tube. Well, my 10 yo, GiGi, decorated a little turtle and entered Kevin in the turtle race in the lazy river. Twelve noon was post time and the activities director dumped about 50 decorated plastic turtles into the river…and the race was on!
The excitement of kids and parents energized everyone on this muggy 93 degree day. People were hootin’ and cheerin’, running around the river to see where their turtle was…it was hilarious. I actually shouted to another excited father, “Competition, you gotta love it!”
I’ve always loved sports, ever since I was a kid. Clear goals, structure, expectations, excitement, winning, a second chance when you lose, attention, escape from reality. I was blessed to have many successful experiences in athletics.
But you see, even though sports were a positive activity in many ways for me, I also developed a dependency on them, turning to them when I was low, insecure, lonely, felt inadequate in another area, or was confused. This really stunted my spiritual growth, as I should have been turning to God and His Holy Bible instead.
God wants you to be all His. Once you Believe and then Receive, God, through His Holy Spirit, He is constantly working to wean you off all other dependencies. A big part of Becoming is letting your security rest in Him alone; not in other things, people or circumstances.
Today, reflect on what positive activities in your life have you started to rely too much on, or you turn to before you turn to God. Work, food, spouse, kids, intellect, problem-solving skills, the list is endless. Turn to Him first today, then these other areas will fit in with more satisfaction and fulfillment when He forms the foundation of our happiness.
Prayer
Dear Father, I thank You for all that I have and I thank You for the security You provide for my life. Day by day now this physical world is becoming a more frightening place, such an insecure place. I accept You as my God and my savior, but I humbly admit to You that I am not yet weaned from other dependencies.

Stepping Stones: Leaning Is Powerful
Transformational Tip
A few years back I found myself in a very bad place. My world was crumbling around me. Two mature Christian men, one new friend and one old, taught me how to lean on them…to prop myself up with their strength in my time of extreme weakness.
Christians…those growing in their relationship to the Father…gradually mature in their ability to lean. Leaning is not something that comes easily to many of us. Our stubborn independence causes us to view leaning as a sign of weakness. However, the Bible makes it clear that leaning is one of the marks of a real Christian.

Let Him help you reach your full potential and accomplish all the good things he has called you to do. He actually died for you…for no reason other than He loved His father…AND YOU! Click here to share with the Stepping Stones community your perspective of being independent of God vs. dependent on God.
Prayer
Dear Father, forgive me for thinking I could make it through life on my own. I need Your help and Your guidance in everything I do. Help me to stop trying to control everything…help me to listen to Your voice…to obey You…to trust You. I have leaned on myself and what the world offers and my hole only got deeper. Thanks for loving me more than I love me and for showing me how much You really love me thru Your taking my penalty and place on the cross. I pray this in the name of the One was sent to take my place, and teach and guide me, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children say - AMEN!
Colossians 1:15-17
The Great American Way…Capitalism… the Land of Independence...Self-Sufficiency…Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. We are raised and taught, “take care of yourself, don’t be a burden on others, and it’s the weak that are dependent on something or somebody else.” I want to do life on my own!
If you were ever a victim of abuse of any kind, you no doubt felt you had no control in the situation…whether it was mild, like ridicule or harshness from your parents, to neglect in a dating relationship, to misuse of power by someone in authority, or any other form of mistreatment. Or the abuse might have been extreme or violent…bullying, sexual coercion while dating, to mugging, and sexual molestation, even rape. No one has escaped all mistreatment.
We associate the abuse with being out of control, so we make a promise to ourselves to never let ourselves be in that dependent position again. So now we try to control most situations…including every relationship in our life...to make sure our vulnerability never answers the door when potential abuse knocks. Now, we probably have a hard time being vulnerable to being dependent on God and His controlling hand in our life.
I know, I was hardheaded about turning my life over to Him…and still struggle with it. But I tried being independent, controlling my life…it landed me in jail, with alcohol and a fear of other’s opinions and feelings as my master.
None of us can be free to become all we were meant to be until we recognize that God is in control…that He loves us and wants to care for us. We are fooling ourselves when we think we can make it on our own through this life. We need to lean on Him. On His wisdom, strength, love, character, promises…and His son.
Today, remember that this man you read about, Jesus, loves you. He is inviting you to put your hands in His and let Him guide you and help you through all circumstances of life…regardless of what ever has happened in the past. Stop trying to figure everything out on your own. Stop trying to forge through life depending on your own strength and understanding. Let Jesus love you. Stepping Stones: Let Him Wean You
Transformational Tip
God wants you to be all His. Once you Believe and then Receive, God, through His Holy Spirit is constantly working to wean you off all other dependencies. Especially as men we are raised to become independent, so becoming dependent on someone goes against our indoctrination and experiences. As women, we have been hurt and let down when we have depended on others to lead and protect, that we guard against total submission and dependence....fearing more letdown and hurt. What we fail to realize is that we are always dependent on someone... if it isn't another, then I am depending on me. Wow, that is when my life fell apart the most...when I relied on my understanding, abilities, power, "love" for me, methods, and willingness to sacrifice for my own growth. A big part of Becoming is letting your security rest in Him alone; not in other things, people or circumstances. He will detox you from you, because you have been a false substitute for HIM.
Prayer
Dear Father,
I thank You for all that I have and I thank You for the security You provide for my life. Day by day now this physical world is becoming a more frightening place, such an insecure place. I accept You as my God and my savior, but I humbly admit to You that I am not yet weaned from other dependencies. Help me let go of them as I grasp more firmly to You.
I don't want to depend on me anymore. I know You have way more input in my life than I realize, so pen my eyes to Your grace when You meet my needs and protect me more clearly, so I can really grow confident in to shift my dependency from me, a hollow limited substitute, to YOU. In Jesus' life sustaining name, AMEN.
The Truth
But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire.
Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully-grown brings forth death.
Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers.
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.
James 1:14-17
Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, declares the Lord GOD. Repent and turn from all your transgressions, lest iniquity be your ruin.
Cast away from you all the transgressions that you have committed, and make yourselves a new heart and a new spirit! Why will you die, O house of Israel?
For I have no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Lord GOD; so turn, and live."

Stepping Stones: Victory is Yours
Transformational Tip
You can achieve a victorious life through living in deep dependence of Jesus. Most time people associate victory with success, with not falling or stumbling...not making mistakes. But those who believe they are successful because of their own human strength tend to go their own way and forget about their Lord. It is through problems and failure, weakness and neediness that you learn to rely on God.
Prayer
Father God, I know that true dependence on You is more than simply asking You to bless what I have already decided to do, rather it is me coming to You each day with an open mind and heart. I invite You Lord to plant your desires for me deep within me. Infuse me with a dream so large that I know I will never achieve it without Your continuous presence in my life. Help me Lord build a profound reliance on You. Help me take my faith-walk, my stepping stones one step at a time, leaning on each step. Thank You Lord for the blessedness of a Victorious life by deepening my dependence on You.
The Truth
You gave a wide place for my steps under me, and my feet did not slip
2 Samuel 22:37
for we walk by faith, not by sight.
2 Corinthians 5:7
for the LORD your God is he who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies, to give you the victory.
