Thanksgiving Day is a great holiday and the four-day weekend ushers in a break we all appreciate. Thanksgiving seems like the eye of the storm, the calm nestled between the crazy pace of autumn, when work and school are in high gear, and the impending mad rush of the Christmas and New Year season.
It’s great to have our family all together again for the first time in over 3 months as our oldest just got home from college, like many others who journey home to be with those they love. Thanksgiving Day is filled with parades, football, family traditions, memories, and great food. Above all else … and even if none of these other things existed in our lives … Thanksgiving is a time that provides the opportunity for us to be simply thankful, a time to lift ourselves and others out of the dark dungeon of ungratefulness.
You see, we live in an age of entitlement … and it’s often difficult to be thankful when we feel “entitled” to so many things. We often focus on what we want or don’t have instead of all the blessings we do have and should be so thankful for. We need to work hard to counteract the glut of propaganda proclaiming the mantra, “We deserve more.”
Every Christmas commercial, ad, self-help book, well-meaning friend, and small voice from your flesh will scream that you deserve everything that is good or valuable. Really, we are all sinners and, news flash … the wages for sin is death. Everything we have is a tremendous gift of powerful grace that is granted to us by the one we offend, disappoint, reject, deny, and grieve … very regularly.
I hate to be a holiday downer, but you see, unless you know what you really and truly deserve, it is impossible to see how many gifts and how much unbelievable grace you actually have been granted and blessed with … every single day.
Today, when you aren’t full of thanks, ask God to open your eyes and release you from the dark dungeon of ungratefulness. Before you eat, go around the table, holding hands, and tell each other what you are thankful for. Remember, the secret of being thankful is learning to see everything from God’s perspective. Then you will truly thank Him for loving, pursuing, and giving you so much, instead of giving you what you deserve. Your decision, choose well.

Dear Father God, I come to You, Father, in prayer. I ask, Father, that You set me free from the prison of ingratitude. Release me, Lord, to enjoy the pleasures of having a thankful heart. It’s easy for me, Father, to be grateful when I wake up on the right side of the bed and encounter no major problems. At other times, thankfulness feels totally unreachable. I need a perspective-lift Father; help me see things from Your viewpoint. I pray in the name of the One who is the source and reason for my thankfulness, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children say - AMEN!

Stepping Stones: Trick or Treat, For All The Marbles
Transformational Thought
Trick or Treat? What does that mean? As a kid, I never really understood what that actually meant. I was the one saying “trick or treat”, but was I asking them whether they wanted a trick or a treat from me? Was I asking the house owner to choose whether they would trick me or give me candy? Was I offering to perform a trick for them so they would give me candy based on how good my trick was? Was I to do a trick for my treat, like a dog? Who really was supposed to be doing the trick? Was I supposed to give them a treat from my bag if they didn’t like my trick? I hoped I was the one getting a treat, but why was I asking the adult, “Trick or Treat?”
As I went from house to house, in my pursuit of the perfect blend of Reese’s, Sweet-Tarts, real coins, a big candy bar, or the grandest house of them all, put in my hand and choose for myself, were they giving me a choice to accept a trick or treat from them? Nobody could ever explain it to me. It seemed like the person answering the door was giving me a treat and no tricks were happening. Confusing!
Halloween is about pretending to be someone you’re not. Then a stranger gives you a small “fun” size treat, a cheap imitation of the real king size candy bar you are longing for. Or like Charlie Brown’s letdown when he realizes, “I got a rock.” Isn’t this just like Satan’s plan? In the real story, God wants us to come with no costume, no hiding behind a mask, just baring our soul to Him. We don’t have to be nervous about a trick or treat, or who is doing which one. We don’t need to be frightened as we approach His door. In fact, He comes to our door. God isn’t a stranger we only see once a year, but our loving and dear Father and friend who loves us more than anything. He has all the treats, and we don’t need to perform any tricks, other than accepting His son’s sacrifice for all our sins.
Best of all, our hearts aren’t filled with cheap imitations of the real treat. We are getting the King of Kings to come into our heart, our lives, and sharing His royal inheritance. All He has is ours. The best thing is the cost … it requires no trick from us. In fact, Jesus did the trick. He died on the cross so you can enjoy all the treats His Father, your Father, can infinitely give you above and beyond your heart’s desires.
Today, Halloween is controversial. But as you think back on past Halloweens, or take your kids around for fun and candy, or give out candy to other excited kids, be thankful for the treat your Father gave you. Express some real gratitude to God and be gleeful, just like a child finding a dream candy bar in the bag. Also, take time to think of who needs this treat and show them how to go “trick or treating” for all the marbles.
Prayer
Dear Father God, you are so amazing. I am so glad I don’t have to pretend to be someone else with you. Just as I am you shower me with so many treats. Help me see and appreciate the many treats you bring into my life everyday, treats that I often overlook, take for granted, or feel entitled to. Stepping Stones: Get Real!
Transformational Thought
Get real! That college is out of your league. Be real! That girl is way too pretty for you. Get real! You’ll never play on that team, get that part, make that band, get that job.
How many times have we heard these expressions? How many times have we said them to ourselves? How many times have we silently thought them when our children made grandiose statements or shared impossible dreams? In the past it was hard for me to see who I really was, to actually get real with myself. Why is this so hard for us to do? Why is it so hard to face ourselves?
I know one good reason … the enemy, Satan, likes it this way. The enemy tries to plant seeds of deception, pain, sinfulness … lenses of self-hate instead of acceptance of God’s love for us. His corrupt world system pushes our buttons and interferes with our ability to interpret God’s sovereignty accurately.
Another reason … it’s painful for us to see who we really are. It was for me. It was a lot easier to think I was important, talented, bright, nice, blah, blah, blah … than to see my insecurities, inadequacies and needs. It’s even harder still to face the major uphill battle to overcome issues like these. The best way for us to face ourselves … to be real with ourselves … is to remember that as Christians we are constantly clothed in Jesus’ robe of righteousness.
God knows exactly what sins, weaknesses, and blemishes we try to hide underneath the faultless garment of salvation that covers and erases all. And He rejoices over you with singing … just imagine that … God singing over you!
Today, know that your Lord and God longs for you to trust Him enough to be fully yourself with Him. Being real with your God allows Him to bring out the very best in you. When you are real, He can work on your weaknesses. Pray to Him about one thing you have never really opened up to Him. Let light into that area of your life … this pushes the darkness out, and then real healing and transformation can occur. Your decision, choose well.
Prayer
Dear Father God, I want to grow the gifts that You planted in my soul. I want to be real with You, Lord. But this is a painful experience for me because I first have to be real with myself. It seems easier for me to ignore how I’m feeling rather than face my misery head on. I pray, Father, that You help me stop numbing my discomfort and negative feelings with my sinful diversions. Give me the courage, Father, to face myself so that I can be real with You. Thank You, Father. I pray in the name of the One who died so I could be real in Your presence, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children say - AMEN!
The Truth
I delight greatly in the LORD; my soul rejoices in my God. For he has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of righteousness…
Isaiah 61:10
The LORD your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing.
Zephaniah 3:17
"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind and, Love your neighbor as yourself.”

Stepping Stones: Holy Ground Here On Earth

Our society is so complex, more toys and gadgets than you can count, and so much technology at our fingertips. My two teenager daughters swear they can easily tackle a conversation, text, and watch a YouTube video … all at the same time!
I am blessed to be a pretty good multi-tasker myself. Very rarely am I doing just one thing at a time. Part of it is my addiction to productivity; part of it is enjoying activity. But there are times I have trouble multi-tasking. It especially affects me when I’m talking with another person who is in need … who is opening up and seeking support or advice. I get very focused on them and what they are sharing … on what I am about to say and how I can help … and sometimes I forget to listen to what God wants me to communicate to them.
The latent hero (or is it the egotist in me?) tries to take charge and “rescue” the person. I am just relying on myself … but trusting my limited abilities is so ineffective. My usefulness in vocation and ministry dramatically improved when I realized this key reality. When people bare their souls to me, I know that I am standing on holy ground, and I need to ask for the help of the Holy Spirit to direct my response in a God-like fashion.
Satan wants us to act on our own power, to leave God out of the equation. And our natural inclination toward independence and self-direction play into this “leave God out conspiracy.” If you jump in with both feet trying to rescue someone without first asking for God’s help and guidance, you have missed the mark and spoiled a splendid opportunity. Your muddy footprints are polluting the holy terrain where you are standing.
Today, as you relate to people, first ask God to listen through you … think through you … love through you … to use you to impact others. We want eyes that see, ears that hear, and a heart that understands. These come from God and help us listen, understand, and provide answers. Everyone in this world has needs and struggles in some way. Remember that your main purpose is to direct the person toward God and His limitless resources. Your decision, so choose well.
Prayer
Dear Father God, I know and believe, Father, that when people bare their souls to me … it is You that has sent them to me. Help me not to play the role of the hero; rather help me be a better instrument of Yours. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit so that I say exactly what You want them to hear. Help me remember that at that very time, I am standing on holy ground. This is an area where I want and need to grow. Help me grow, Father. I pray in the name of the one who empowers me to hear Your voice, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children said - AMEN!

Sometimes I have trouble multitasking. I can do one thing at a time pretty well, but add on one or two extra things and…whoa, too distracting! I have found this particularly limiting. It really impacts me when I’m talking with another person who is in need…who is opening up and seeking support or advice. I get so focused on them and what they are sharing…and what I am about to say…that I forget to listen to what God wants me to communicate to them.
The latent hero (or is it the egotist in me?) tries to take charge and “rescue” the person. I am just relying on myself…but trusting my limited abilities is so ineffective. When someone opens their soul to you, know that you are standing on holy ground and ask for the help of the Holy Spirit to direct your response in a God-like fashion.
Satan wants us to act on our own power, to leave God out of the equation. And our natural inclinations toward independence and self-direction play into this “leave God out conspiracy.” If you jump in with both feet trying to rescue someone without first asking for God’s help and guidance, you have missed the mark and spoiled a splendid opportunity. In a way your muddy footprints are polluting the holy terrain you are standing on.
Today, as you relate to people, first ask God to listen through you…think through you…love through you…to use you to impact others. We want eyes that see, ears that hear, and a heart that understands. These come from God and help us listen, understand, and provide answers. Everyone in this world has needs and is experiencing struggles in some way. Remember that your main purpose is to direct the person toward God and His limitless resources.

Dear Father God, I know and believe, Father, that when people bare their souls to me…it is You that has sent them to me. Stepping Stones: The Dark Dungeon of Ungratefulness
Transformational Thought
Thanksgiving Day is a great holiday and four-day weekend helps. This year my family gets something new as our oldest, Dominique, comes home from college for the first time, just as everyone tries to journey home…to be with those they love. Thanksgiving Day is filled with parades, football, family traditions, memories, and great food. Above all else…and even if none of these other things existed in our lives, Thanksgiving is a time that provides the opportunity for us to be, yes, thankful…to lift ourselves and others out of the dark dungeon of ungratefulness.
We live in an age of entitlement…so it’s often difficult to be thankful when we feel “entitled” to most things. We focus on what we want and don’t have vs. all the blessings we do have and should be so thankful for. We need to work hard to counteract the glut of propaganda proclaiming the mantra, “We deserve more.”
Every Christmas commercial, ad, self-help book, well-meaning friend, and small voice from your flesh will scream to you that you deserve everything that is good or valuable. Really, we are all sinners and, news flash, the wages for sin is death. Everything we have is a tremendous gift of powerful grace that is granted to us by the one we offend, disappoint, reject, deny, and grieve…very regularly.
I hate to be a holiday downer, but you see, unless you know what you really and truly deserve, it is impossible to see how many gifts and how much unbelievable grace you actually have everyday.
Today, when you aren’t full of thanks, ask God to open your eyes and release you from the dark dungeon of ungratefulness. Before you eat, go around the table, holding hands, and tell each other what you are thankful for. Remember, the secret of being thankful is learning to see everything from God’s perspective. Then you will truly thank Him for loving, pursuing, and giving you so much.

Stepping Stones: Out On A Limb
Transformational Thought
As a young boy, I always had a fascination with climbing trees; especially apple trees. I’d climb up, pick the apples, and then throw them down to my brothers. However, I couldn’t get the really good apples, for they always seemed to be hanging out on a limb. I would never go out on a limb…always played it safe. Fear of falling stole my chance to grab the really choice apples out on the edge of the limb.
I think sometimes God asks us to go out on that limb. Just like on the apple tree, the juiciest rewards in life are on the end of the limb. Playing it “safe,” not going out on a limb, is sometimes how Satan wants you to engage with life. So keep your eyes on your Lord as you step out in faith. Grab His hand tightly as you edge your way, following Him out onto that limb.
Since He goes before you, you can keep your eyes on Him as you step out in faith. Soon you will arrive at a resting place. While gripping His hand, look toward the horizon. Enjoy the view from this tree-top perspective. You are actually safer here…out on this limb with your Lord…than you would be hugging the trunk or even standing on the ground.
Overly familiar surroundings feel safer, but they also may lull you into a kind of sleepy self-reliance; and that’s when we tend to forget about the need for our Father.
Just remember the story of Abraham, waiting over 20 years for God to give him a son. Then God asks Abraham to go out on a limb and sacrifice his son, to actually kill Isaac. The juicy living Abraham was rewarded with…..truly amazing, and would never have happened without Abraham following God out to the very edge of the limb.
Today, when doing the right thing feels risky or uncomfortable, envision the scenario you just read, and enjoy the activity and view it in a new way. In this new and challenging situation (out on a limb), you will be more alert and not so quick to let go of His hand.
Prayer
Dear Father God, You are the author and finisher of my faith. I want to follow You wherever You lead me…even if it’s out on a limb. I pray, Father, that You will help me follow You with confidence rather than with fear; for I know, Father, that wherever You lead me is the safest place I could be. I bring all my fears to You, Father, for I now know that fears not dealt with tend to grow and magnify themselves. Stepping Stones: Trick Or Treat For All The Marbles
Transformational Thought
Trick or Treat. As a kid, I never really understood what that actually meant. I was the one saying “trick or treat”, but was I asking them whether they wanted a trick or a treat from me? Was I asking the house owner to choose whether they would trick me or give me a candy? Was I offering to perform a trick for them so they would give me a candy based on how good my trick is? Was I to do a trick for my treat, like a dog? Who really was supposed to be doing the trick? Was I supposed to give them a treat from my bag if they didn’t like my trick? I hoped I was the one getting a treat, but why was I asking the adult?
As I went from house to house, in my pursuit of the perfect blend of Reese’s, Sweet-Tarts, coins, a big candy bar, or the grandest of them all, put in my hand and choose for myself, were they giving me a choice to accept a trick or treat from them? Nobody could ever explain it to me. It seemed like the person answering the door was giving me a treat and no tricks were happening. Confusing!
Halloween is about pretending to be someone you’re not. Then a stranger gives you a small “fun” size treat, a cheap imitation of the real king size candy bar, the jackpot of all jackpots you are hoping for. In the real story, God wants us to come with no costume, not hiding, just baring our soul to Him.
We don’t need to be nervous or frightened as we approach His door. In fact, He comes to our door. God isn’t a stranger we only see once a year, but our loving and dear Father and friend who loves us more than anything. Best of all, our hearts aren’t filled with cheap imitations of the real treat. We are getting the King of Kings, and sharing His royal inheritance. All He has is ours. The best thing is the cost…it requires no trick from us. In fact, Jesus did the trick. He died on the cross so I can enjoy all the treats His Father, my Father, can infinitely give me above and beyond my heart’s desires.
Today, as you think back on past Halloweens, take your kids around for fun and candy, or give out candy to other excited kids, be thankful for the treat your Father gave you. Also, take time to think of who needs this treat and show them how to go “trick or treating” for all the marbles.

Stepping Stones: Spiritual Surgury
Transformational Tip
We live in an age of entitlement; everyone thinks they deserve more. You must constantly counteract the barrage of propaganda telling you you need more...deserve more. A good way of leaning against such lies and to be more thankful is to learn to see everything from God's perspective. Let this world become your classroom. Let His Word become a lamp to your feet and a light for your path.
It's almost impossible to have a thankful heart when you are in a constant state of wanting. A way to reverse this is to saturate your mind with Scripture: read it, think about it, and memorize portions of it. This will allow you to see things from His perspective.
Today, make a list of all the blessings you really do have in your life. To help spur thought, think of those that are disabled, in third world situations, are oppressed, or have gone through serious events. Then list why you deserve...I mean actually deserve... that blessing. Give thanks for the blessings and go to the His word to cut deep to your entitlement. Remember that His word is sharper than any double edged sword. Let Him use it to do spiritual surgery on the thoughts and attitudes of your mind and soul.

Stepping Stones: The Story Doesn't End There
Transformational Tip
What if you were a murder, rapist, thief, child molester.....terrible, sinful things. Then you were caught and found guilty. Sentence pronounced - DEATH. Just as they are getting the lethal injection ready, the warden runs in to stop everything and lets you know the wonderful news. The penalty for your crime is death. A perfect person, who owed no penalty, has voluntarily taken your place and will be executed for you. You are free to go as your penalty is Paid in Full (the first blessing). What a great day, but if that was the end of the story, it wouldn't be that great. Who really wants to date, befriend, hire, hangout with, marry, a convicted murderer, rapist, thief, child molester. The second blessing is that the King of Kings, Lord of Lords, Prince of Peace, Almighty creator of everything wants to date you, marry you, hang out, trusts you with His kids, possessions, and really loves and wants to get to know you regardless of our sins, past, present, and future.
Today, try to see you the way God sees you. Now look at God with the gratitude and love that He extends to you (if we could even muster 1/10 the love He gives us - wow). Rejoice in His second blessing.
Prayer
Dear gracious and Merciful Father,
I confess my sinful ways before you and thank you for your forgiveness. Thanks for not giving up on me and for your relentless pursuit of me, especially when I stray way off course. Thanks for the nudging you give me to get back on track, even though at times I see it as adversity, I now realize, you were trying to catch my attention and get me back on the right path toward true peace, freedom, and contentment in your ways and arms.
Please help me be a grateful prodigal son and not be resentful of other prodigals that you also forgive. In Jesus' blessed name, AMEN.

Just as they are getting the lethal injection ready, the warden runs in to stop everything and lets you know the wonderful news. The penalty for your crime is death. A perfect person, who owed no penalty, has voluntarily taken your place and will be executed for you. You are free to go as your penalty is Paid in Full (the first blessing). What a great day, but if that was the end of the story, it wouldn't be that great. Who really wants to date, befriend, hire, hangout with, marry, a convicted murderer, rapist, thief, child molester. The second blessing is that the King of Kings, Lord of Lords, Prince of Peace, Almighty creator of everything wants to date you, marry you, hang out, trusts you with His kids, possessions, and really loves and wants to get to know you regardless of our sins, past, present, and future.
Today, try to see you the way God sees you. Now look at God with the gratitude and love that He extends to you (if we could even muster 1/10 the love He gives us - wow). Rejoice in His second blessing.
Prayer
Dear gracious and Merciful Father,
I confess my sinful ways before you and thank you for your forgiveness. Thanks for not giving up on me and for your relentless pursuit of me, especially when I stray way off course. Thanks for the nudging you give me to get back on track, even though at times I see it as adversity, I now realize, you were trying to catch my attention and get me back on the right path toward true peace, freedom, and contentment in your ways and arms.
Please help me be a grateful prodigal son and not be resentful of other prodigals that you also forgive. In Jesus' blessed name, AMEN.

An amazing number of lottery winners, within one year, have divorce, addictions, family estrangement, or legal or financial problems. Why? Luck was on their side, they got what they wanted. But they weren't ready to handle the blessings that came their way. A good parent doesn't' give their 13 year old the keys to the car even though he wants them and thinks driving will make him really happy and change his life. He isn't ready for that responsibility and it will only lead to failure and frustration. God has many blessings He wants to give us, but He is waiting for us to show we have the heart, skills, attitude, and character to handle them. How do you handle good times...adversity? Adversity is really a character test. Everything that happens to you is "good luck" because God knows what is best for you. It is now up to you to appreciate that everyday is a lucky day.
Prayer
O Father,
I come to you with a thankful and receptive heart. I also come to you with a repentant heart; please forgive my sins small and large. I know from your word that sin blocks the full power of the Your Holy Spirit working in and throughout my spirit, mind and body. Prepare me my Lord to receive the bounty of Your blessings and gifts. Help me this day align myself with your plan for me...and I know "good will come to me".

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
