Stepping Stones: Who Are You Building a Tower With?

March 1, 2012

Transformational Thought

A couple weeks ago, Feb 20, we talked about conflict and unity. Where there is unity, there is much strength. Even when people are unified for the wrong reasons, you can see the synergy and power that unity itself can generate.

The world had only one language after the flood in Genesis. Soon after, the people decided to build a great city with a tower that would go to the heavens. Why? They weren’t interested in honoring God, but in making a name for themselves, and sticking together - versus being scattered over the face of the whole earth. Knowing that this would be an ongoing temptation for man, God confused the language of the people and scattered them all over the earth.

Unity in and of itself is not necessarily good. Many aspects are involved in the concept of unity: brotherhood, loyalty, allegiance, and how to organize the group. But there are 2 key starting points to achieving unity. First, what is the motive; second, what is the object or cause that unifies the people? So, we need to make sure we are pursuing Godly causes with Godly motives. The oneness we seek must be in Christ and through Christ, which reunites us with the Father and honors our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Those people in Genesis truly were powerfully united. But their purpose was prideful and offensive to the holiness of God. They were not seeking to reunite with God. They were pursuing equality with God, actually trying to be like God with divine acceptance and status, but through their own human effort.

Building a tower to the heavens to be like God, it sounds ridiculous. “I would never do that,” right? But we act and think a number of times each day with that same “my kingdom come” mentality. We idolize or focus on ourselves first, and don’t bring God into the picture until we become desperate or until someone else reminds us that God is part of our lives.

If we unite to seek power or success, focusing solely on human effort, for human rewards, from human motivations, we displease God … and are destined to ultimately fail. This especially holds true for the church. We must be focused on Christ, not on the building, organization, or denomination.

Today, take a look at those you are uniting with - like family, coworkers, friends, organizations … for what goal … and with what motivation? Where is Jesus and the gospel in this pursuit? Be focused on honoring God, not yourself. Always recognize your total dependence on Him. Let us stand together with one spirit and one purpose, fighting together for the faith, which is the Good News. Life is your decision, so choose well.

Prayer
My Father and my Lord, Forgive me for the times that I've united with others to accomplish something, focusing on selfish ambition and desires rather than honoring You and accomplishing Your will. Help me to always focus on You more than any organization or ambition. It is my desire and goal to honor You in all I do. If you have me in organizations, encourage me to be Your influence in those lives. I pray this and all prayers for the One who teaches about true unity, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children say - AMEN!

The Truth
Above all, you must live as citizens of heaven, conducting yourselves in a manner worthy of the Good News about Christ. Then, whether I come and see you again or only hear about you, I will know that you are standing together with one spirit and one purpose, fighting together for the faith, which is the Good News.
Philippians 1:27

Stepping Stones: Guilt Trip To…. Nowhere

Transformational Thought

I often hear mothers using guilt to “motivate” their children. “If you loved me, you would do your chores.” “I worked long and hard on this meal, so you better eat it.” Or other people might say, “We’ll have to cancel the event … unless you help us.” And the classic, “Look at these starving kids in Africa and all the food you throw away. Please send money.”

Guilt is an incredible motivator, but that’s not really the correct role and use of guilt. I am all for pointing out injustices and needs and then allowing people to step into their role to help these situations. The issue I am trying to separate from these examples is this: we shouldn’t try to use guilt as a tool to motivate people.

Several subliminal distorted messages can unwontedly occur when people act as a result of feeling guilty. 1. I am responsible for and can control someone else’s feelings through what I do. 2. The other person won’t feel better unless I act the way they want. 3. When you want to get someone to do something for you, it is OK to lay a guilt trip on them. 4. Decisions should be based on self-needs and emotions, not God’s truth, facts, and reasoning … probably the worst message. Unfortunately, these distorted messages subtly seep into many people’s everyday functioning and dramatically interfere with Godly decision-making.

Many pastors and priests try to whip their congregations into Christian action by delivering guilt-inducing sermons. Whether guilting someone to say the sinner’s prayer, give money, volunteer, or stop a certain behavior, the end does not justify the means. I have personally experienced these guilt-evoking messages. And unfortunately, they undermine the very foundation of grace and love that God wants to instill in a believer’s heart.

Today, take notice if you are feeling guilty about something, or if you are inducing guilt in someone else. Stop and examine why guilt is present. Let the guilt warn you a problem exists, but don’t let it be your decision-maker. Let reason and the Bible direct your heart and actions. Confess, repent, apologize, and ask forgiveness. You are responsible for your feelings and happiness; the other person is responsible for his own. Above all else, be mindful that God does not measure and judge you by the amount of good works you do; rather He looks into your heart. Your decision, choose well.

Prayer
Dear Father God, I do not want to be stressed out about not “doing enough” to be a good Christian. I know that You want me to relax in the assurance of Your perfect love. Today help me remember that You delight in me more than I can ever imagine, that You see me cloaked in Your light and presence … and that there is no condemnation for those cloaked in You. Help me daily, Lord, to come closer to having the Mind of Christ. Help me make decisions based on Your word, not my feelings. Help me feel convicted and guilty about my wrongs, but then look to You for forgiveness, and to Your word for guidance in doing right. I pray in the name of the One who knew no guilt ‘til He bore all mine, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children say - AMEN!

The Truth
I delight greatly in the LORD; my soul rejoices in my God. For he has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom adorns his head like a priest.
Isaiah 61:10

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.

Stepping Stones: People Pleaser or God Pleaser?

Transformational Thought

I love to please my daughters. Who doesn’t want to see their kids happy, especially if we are the one bringing them delight? But I also want to see them safe and healthy. So when they make unhealthy or dysfunctional requests, it is easy for me to say “NO!” … even though they aren’t pleased, or are actually upset, or cry because of my answer.

Don’t believe me? What about when they ask … for their third bowl of ice cream … for the keys to the car and they’re only 13 … to stay out to midnight on a school night when they are 14 … to camp out with a boyfriend, alone, when they are 16. All these will easily get a “no” answer from me regardless of how displeased my beloved daughters are.

When fellow adults make dysfunctional requests, for some reason, for most of us, it is harder to say “no”. Whether I think they know more than I do about the particular situation … or they know what’s best for themselves more than I do … or I fear and hate being uneasy when people are mad or upset at me … or I fear their rejection … or I need their approval … or I need to be needed or accepted. Many “I need…” or “I fear…” lenses, based on a me-centered mentality, significantly interfere with our perspective, and lead to disrespectful, dysfunctional, or even sinful relational conduct.

When we focus on trying to please people by acting dysfunctionally, we are not serving God. If we are truly His servants, then our primary goal will be to please Him first, not others.

When Jesus lived on earth, many who believed in Him would not admit their faith. Because these people were more concerned about personal safety and other people’s opinions rather than God’s opinion, they did not live out their faith. Likewise, when we live as people-pleasers, we are demonstrating the fact that we are more concerned about people’s approval instead of God’s … and therefore our walk with Him will always be hindered.

Today, ask yourself: What is my greatest perceived need or greatest perceived threat when someone makes a request of me … or when I feel the need to people-please in a relationship? Whom am I trying to please ... God or the person? Maybe most of your life is lived to please God, but there is still some situation … or some person … that sparks you to be a people-pleaser. God wants us to put Him first in all things … we cannot please Him by placing more importance on people’s opinions … or our needs … over His.

Prayer
Dear Father God, I do want to please You. Forgive me for the times I let my desire to be accepted by a person outweigh my desire to please You. Thank You for Your love and for accepting me unconditionally. Help me to be a better servant, doing the right thing, not the people-pleasing thing, as I grow healthy relationships with others. I pray this and all prayers in the name of the One who was the perfect servant, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children say - AMEN!

The Truth
I am not trying to please people. I want to please God. Do you think I am trying to please people? If I were doing that, I would not be a servant of Christ.
Galatians 1:10

Many people did believe in him, however, including some of the Jewish leaders. But they wouldn’t admit it for fear that the Pharisees would expel them from the synagogue. For they loved human praise more than the praise of God.

Stepping Stones: Obedience and Respect

Transformational Thought

Respect and reverence have become negative and, at times, distasteful words in today's world, especially regarding Christianity. In some places, Christians receive disgust, animosity, and on occasion, hate and disdain. In the United States, Christians are increasingly viewed as opinionated bigots and narrow-minded people.

Thousands of years ago, God told Noah to build an ark to save his family because He was sending a flood to destroy all life on earth. Up to this time, people had not experienced rain…only a light mist that watered the earth. And here was Noah, building a humongous ship on dry land.

Nobody understood what Noah was doing or why…and actually, they never did until the rain started to fall as Noah had zero converts. Noah took their questions, laughter, abuse and ridicule…day after day, year after year, decade after decade…for 100 years.

Did they have respect for him and his faith? Not at all. The people were so evil that God would destroy all of them, so we could only imagine how evil their ridicule was and what physical persecution or sabotage they carried out on Noah, his family, and his ark as Satan undoubtedly tried to sabotage God’s plan. Hiding Noah’s hammer, spraying graffiti on the ark, vandalizing the ark, stealing supplies for their own use, throwing rocks at them while they worked. Think of the most violent labor dispute and picket line.

But did Noah continue to respect and reverence God by obeying him? Absolutely. Day after day, Noah plugged and chugged…yes, for 100 years of building.

Today, think about how people view you. Do you reverence God enough to honor Him, even in the face of ridicule? Are you hesitant to do what is right…instead falling into the trap of doing what is popular or politically correct, just to be accepted or avoid rejection? Do you love God enough to share your faith as God gives you opportunity? Some Christians risk even their lives by obeying God. How far are you willing to go to maintain your stand and to honor God? What will you do today to prove it? Your decision, choose well. WITHIN REACH can help.

Prayer
O Heavenly Father, forgive me for my decisions to dishonor You by not speaking up when I knew I should …or by joining in conversations and actions that were displeasing to You. Help me to always honor You by making obedient decisions to follow You…no matter what the circumstances or consequences. Thanks for the examples of Noah, Joseph, Daniel, Shadrach, Meschach, and Abendego, and ultimately, Jesus. Give me the power to love those who dishonor You, but the courage to stand up for You, and the discernment to know how so I honor You and respect them. I pray this and all prayers for the One who shows us the definition of obedience and respect by embodying it, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children say - AMEN!

The Truth
Noah did everything just as God commanded him.
Genesis 6:22

Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. And a servant girl came up to him and said, "You also were with Jesus the Galilean." But he denied it before them all, saying, "I do not know what you mean." And when he went out to the entrance, another servant girl saw him, and she said to the bystanders, "This man was with Jesus of Nazareth." And again he denied it with an oath: "I do not know the man." After a little while the bystanders came up and said to Peter, "Certainly you too are one of them, for your accent betrays you." Then he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, "I do not know the man." And immediately the rooster crowed. And Peter remembered the saying of Jesus, "Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times." And he went out and wept bitterly.

Stepping Stones: What Are You An Activist For?

Transformational Thought

We seem to be living in a me-first era. People exercise less restraint over their impulses and do whatever gives them immediate satisfaction, without regard to the consequences of their actions. These consequences have harmful effects on other people and our surroundings.

The positive effect of this me-first mentality, we live in a time when people are activists and standing up for all sorts of causes. We have people standing up for the rights of dogs, dolphins, eagles, deer, elephants, and almost every animal. We have people standing up for trees, the ocean, deserts, the ozone, swamps, and creeks. We have people standing up for choice of religion, sexual orientation, political party, and choice of wearing clothes or going nude. We have people standing up for everything imaginable, and even being willing to die for their cause.

I love my wife and kids and would fight to the death if someone were attacking them. David knew what was worth standing up for as he spent much time praying to, learning from, and trusting in God. David couldn’t stand to hear Goliath blaspheme his heavenly Father he loved so dearly, His true and living God. Without fear or hesitation, and with great confidence, David was ready to stand up and fight the mighty, giant warrior everybody, even Saul, feared. Why? Because David knew God stood up for him all the time, and later his messiah, Jesus, would make the ultimate stand for him.

Isn't it time that we, as Christians, stand up for our Creator and what He stands for? We don’t need to be belligerent or mean-spirited, our goal is to act and speak boldly with a Christ-like heart. But we can’t be worried about the consequences, even if it means our death, or job loss, or loss of a friendship or even a relative. To David, standing up for God was a no-brainer. What about you?

Today, stand up, be heard and don’t be ashamed of the truth, which is found in Christ… no matter what the consequences! Be a Lighthouse, speak the truth excitedly and boldly thru your actions and attitudes. If it is a testy situation, speak calmly, with motivations consistent with revealing God’s love and compassion, but don’t be afraid to stand up clearly for our Savior and His name. Your decision, choose well!

Prayer
Dear Father God, even though I don’t express my thanks and gratitude very well with my actions, thank you so much for standing up for me when you didn’t have to. Thanks for bearing my burden for me. Draw me closer to You today, and make me more passionate for those around me. Help me to love You more than myself, so I will die to myself, take up my cross, and follow You. Help me see You clearly, and not be so deceived by my fear of other’s opinions or consequences, so I can stand up for You. Give me the strength and the words to stand up for You. I pray in the name of the One who laid on a cross for me, my Savior Jesus Christ; and all God’s children say – AMEN!

The Truth
“If anyone is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.”
Mark 8:38

Then they left the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the name.
Acts 5:41

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

Stepping Stones: Guilt Trip To Nowhere

Transformational Thought

I often hear many mothers really use guilt to “motivate” their children. “If you love me, you would do your chores.” “I worked long and hard on this meal, so you better eat it.” Or others might say, “we’ll have to cancel the event…unless you help us.” “Look at these starving kids in Africa and all the food you throw away. Stepping Stones: Who’s Really Your Judge?

Transformational Tip

My middle daughter Nicole is in middle school. It always amazes me how much importance and truth these early teenagers put in the opinions of their peers. Peers with limited expertise, experience, understanding, wisdom, or objectivity. But they accept their peer’s communication, whether verbal or non-verbal, become the truth, law, and guiding lenses they use to see themselves.

Why do we place so much importance on what other people think of us? Why are we so devastated when they say hurtful things to us or about us? Does their opinion really count? Who made them all knowledgeable judge, jury, and executioner/

Try and remember, "hurt people hurt people". Only One has perfect vision of your situation, knows all the facts, has righteous motivation, and doesn't make any dysfunctional requests of you. Focus on the One whose opinion will ultimately count...your Lord and God.

He tells you in His word how He sees you and what He thinks of your functioning. Above all else, He loves you and continues to pursue you know matter what others think of you.

Today, let Him catch you and talk to you....take time to listen. It will change your opinion of you and Him and life…celebrate what He reveals to you! Don’t let dysfunctional people be your guide. Take in their feedback, but always sift it through God’s grid of how He values, loves, and will always pursue you. Stay focused on this and you will be resilient to the passing fancies of people’s opinions of you.

Prayer
Dear Father, Help me see myself through Your eyes today, dear Lord. When people do or say hurtful things to me, big and small, help me view this as an opportunity to grow in grace. Please help me quickly forgive the one who has wounded me and not focus on getting even or setting the record straight. Instead of focusing on what others opinions are of me, help me focus on You Lord, for ultimately it is Your view of me that counts. When others treat me unfairly, help me remember that Your ways with me are much better than fair. Your ways are forgiveness, love, and peace which You have poured into my heart by Your Holy Spirit. I pray this in the name of the One who ignored all earthly opinions, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children say - AMEN!

The Truth
Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.

Stepping Stones: People Pleaser or God Pleaser?

Transformational Tip

I love to please my daughters. Who doesn’t want to see their kids happy, especially if we can be the one bringing them delight. But we also want to see them safe and healthy, so when they make unhealthy or dysfunctional requests, it is easy to say “NO!”…even though they aren’t pleased or are actually upset by our answer.

Don’t believe me? What about when they ask for…their third bowl of ice cream…the keys to the car and they are only 13…to stay out to midnight when they are 14 on a school night…or camp out with boyfriend, alone, when they are 16. All these will easily get a “No” answer from me regardless of how displeased my beloved daughters are to me.

When fellow adults make dysfunctional requests, for some reason, for most of us, it is harder to say “No”. Whether I think they know more than I do about the particular situation…they know what’s best for themselves…I fear and hate being uneasy when people are mad or upset at me …I fear being rejected by them…I need their approval…I need acceptance. Many “I need…” or “I fear…” lenses, based on me centered mentality, significantly interfere with our perspective and lead to dysfunctional, sinful, relational conduct.

When we focus on trying to please people by acting dysfunctionally, we are not serving God. If we are truly His servants, our primary goal will be to please Him.

When Jesus lived on earth, many who believed in Him would not admit their faith. Because these people were more concerned about people’s opinions than God’s, they did not live out their faith. Likewise, when we live as people pleasers, we are demonstrating the fact that we are more concerned about their approval than God’s…and our walk with him is hindered.

Today, ask yourself; What is my greatest perceived need or greatest perceived threat when someone makes a request of me…or I feel the need to act in a relationship. Who am I trying to please?...God or the person. Maybe most of your life is lived to please God, but there is still some situation…or some person…that sparks you to be a people-pleaser. God wants us to put Him first in all things…we cannot please Him by placing more importance on people’s opinions …and our needs… over His.

Stepping Stones: Are You Building a Tower?

Transformational Tip

Yesterday we talked about unity. Where there is unity, there is much strength… even if people are unified for the wrong reason.

After the flood in Genesis, the world had only one language. The people decided to build a great city with a tower that would go to the heavens. Why? Not to honor God, but to make a name for themselves, and to prevent being scattered over the face of the whole earth. Knowing that this would be an ongoing temptation for man, God confused the language of the people and scattered them all over the earth.

Unity in and of itself is not necessarily good...it is the object or cause that unifies that is important. We need to make sure we are pursuing Godly causes with Godly motives. The oneness we should seek must be in Christ, which honors our Savior.

These people were united, but their purpose was prideful and offensive to the holiness of God. They were seeking equality with God and divine acceptance through human effort.

If we unite to seek power or success, focusing solely on human effort, for human rewards, from human motivations, we displease God…and are destined to ultimately fail. This especially holds true for the church; we must be focused on Christ, not on the organization.

Today, take a look at who you are uniting with…for what goal…and with what motivation. Where is Jesus and the gospel in this pursuit? Be focused on honoring God, not yourself. Always recognize our total dependence on Him. Let us stand together with one spirit and one purpose, fighting together for the faith, which is the Good News.

Click here to share with the Stepping Stones community your perspective on building towers.

Prayer
My Father and my Lord, Forgive me for the times that I've united with others to accomplish something, focusing on selfish ambition and desires rather than honoring You and accomplishing Your will. Help me to always focus on You more than any organization or ambition. It is my desire and goal to honor You in all I do. I pray this and all prayers for the One teaches about true unity, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children say - AMEN!

The Truth
Above all, you must live as citizens of heaven, conducting yourselves in a manner worthy of the Good News about Christ. Then, whether I come and see you again or only hear about you, I will know that you are standing together with one spirit and one purpose, fighting together for the faith, which is the Good News.

Nobody understood what Noah was doing or why…and they never did as Noah had no converts. Noah took their questions, laughter, abuse and ridicule…day after day, year after year, decade after decade…for 100 years.

Did they have respect for him and his faith? None at all. The people were so evil that God would destroy all of them, so we could only imagine how evil their ridicule was and what physical persecution or sabotage they carried out on Noah, his family, and his ark as Satan undoubtedly tried to sabotage God’s plan.

But did Noah continue to respect and reverence God by obeying him? Absolutely. Day after day, Noah plugged and chugged…yes, for 100 years of building.

Today, think about how people view you. Do you reverence God enough to honor him, even in the face of ridicule? Are you hesitant to do what is right…instead falling into the trap of doing what is popular or politically correct to be accepted? Do you love God enough to share your faith as God gives you opportunity? Some Christians risk even their lives by obeying God. How far are you willing to go to maintain your stand and to honor God? What will you do today to prove it?

Prayer
O Heavenly Father, forgive me for the times I have dishonored You by not speaking up when I knew I should …or by joining in conversations and actions that were displeasing to You. Help me to always honor You by obeying You…no matter what the circumstances. Give me the power to love those who dishonor You, but the courage to stand up for Your, and the discernment to know how so I honor You and respect them.

Stepping Stones: Who Do You Fear?

Transformational Tip
Share your cookie…say nice things…let your friend go first…let’s not keep score to promote sportsmanship. The Golden Rule - Love your neighbor as yourself. We all learned, or were at least lectured, about the importance of being nice to others. Pleasing people can be quite rewarding…not pleasing people can bring a lot of downside. One key is, “what motivates me to please people?”

I just recently came to the realization of just how much of my life is controlled and hampered by fear of people. This condition has been so prevalent in my life that I failed to recognize it most of my life…I just accepted it as part of my daily existence. My fear does not come from thinking they will hurt me or do me harm, my fear comes from the possibility of displeasing them and therefore not getting what I need (or think I need) from them.

Today, stop and think about how much of your life is hampered by fear of people. Then try this two-pronged approach for dealing with this crippling fear. First, replace your fear of displeasing people with the dread of displeasing the Lord of your universe. Secondly, develop a deeper trust in God. Instead of trying to please people so they will give you what you want, trust in Him – the Supplier of all your needs. Prayer
O God, The fear of displeasing people is so deeply engrained in my mind. I am too concerned about displeasing them or looking foolish in their eyes. I confess, Father, that I am a people pleaser, but I deeply desire to change this. Help me to worry more about displeasing You. Help me, Father, to trust You more…to trust that I will get everything I need from You…not other people. I pray in the name of the ultimate pleaser of the world, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children said - AMEN!

The Truth
The fear of man brings a snare, But whoever trusts in the LORD shall be safe.
Proverbs 29:25
And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:19
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
Hebrews 12:1,2
