Transformational Thought
We seem to be living in a me-first era, in which people exercise less restraint over their impulses, doing whatever gives immediate satisfaction without regard to the consequences of their actions. These consequences have harmful effects not only on the doer, but also on other people as well.
The positive effect of this me-first mentality is that we get to live in a time when people are activists and standing up for all sorts of causes. People stand up for the rights of dogs, dolphins, eagles, deer, elephants, and almost every animal. People stand up for trees, the ocean, deserts, the ozone, swamps, and creeks. We have people standing up for choice of religion, sexual orientation, political party, wearing clothes or going nude. We have people standing up for everything imaginable, and even willing to die for their cause.
I love my wife and kids and would fight to the death if someone were attacking them. David knew what was worth standing up for as he spent much time praying to, learning from, and trusting in God. David couldn’t stand to hear Goliath blaspheme his heavenly Father whom he loved so dearly, His true and living God. Without fear or hesitation, and with great confidence, David was ready to stand up and fight the mighty, giant warrior whom everybody, even Saul, feared. Why? Because David knew God stood up for him all the time, and later his messiah, Jesus, would make the ultimate stand for him.
Isn't it time that we, as Christians, stand up for our Creator and what He stands for? We don’t need to be belligerent or mean-spirited or put others down. Our goal is to act and speak boldly with a Christ-like heart, and to raise up God and His principles. But we can’t be worried about the consequences, even if it means our death, job loss, loss of a friendship, or even a loved one. To David, standing up for God was a no-brainer. What about you?
Today, stand up, be heard and don’t be ashamed of the truth, which is found in Christ … no matter what the consequences! Be a Lighthouse, speak the truth excitedly and boldly through your actions and attitudes. If it is a testy situation, speak calmly, revealing God’s love and compassion, but don’t be afraid to stand up clearly for our Savior and His name. Your decision, choose well!
Prayer
Dear Father God, even though I don’t express my thanks and gratitude very well by my actions, thank you so much for standing up for me when you didn’t have to. Thanks for bearing my burden for me. Draw me closer to You today, and make me more passionate for those around me. Help me to love You more than myself, so I will die to myself, take up my cross, and follow You. Help me see You clearly, and not be deceived by my fear of other’s opinions. Give me the strength and the words to stand up for You. I pray in the name of the One who lay on a cross for me, my Savior Jesus Christ; and all God’s children say – AMEN!
The Truth
“If anyone is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.”
Mark 8:38
Then they left the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the name.
Acts 5:41
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
Romans 1:16

Stepping Stones: Why Settle for “Normal”?
Transformational Thought
Wanting to fit in or be accepted by those around us is a natural urge. We tend to look around and follow the pursuits of those around us. Sometimes, we also use the strategies we observe to manage life and the spiritual warfare we wage on a daily basis.
It’s so easy to be influenced by (and even brainwashed into the belief) that the world’s view and thinking is accurate. Television programs subtly—and more and more recently, not so subtly—dishonor God. They present sinful attitudes, behaviors, and lifestyles as normal—over and over again through the months and the years. Without realizing it, we can gradually begin accepting sinful behavior as “normal.”
Other influences … friends, employers, books, movies, family ... shape our thinking as well. One real danger has been introduced in the form of books and movies that claim to be Christian and use “Christian-ese” words. But in fact, they teach things that are totally unscriptural. Usually good teaching is mixed in with the deceptive teaching, drawing many Christians into accepting the whole because of some carefully placed Biblical truths. Jesus warned us to be careful—that even the elect could be deceived.
Remember we are in a spiritual battle and our foe is formidable and has studied us for thousands of years. He knows us better than you know ourselves. Satan is incredible. He will always come up with subtle strategies and methods to veer us away from God. He is also very patient. He doesn’t care if he steers you away from God only one degree per month at first. Then after a number of months, you hit that slippery slope and are in a free fall.
How can we avoid being drawn into the pull of the world’s influences? By letting God transform us into a new person. But it’s not all up to Him. We have free will and need to be great stewards of it. We need to change the way we see everything in our lives, in our circumstances, and in our motivations. Then our decision-making will be Godly and transformation will occur exponentially in our spirit, mind, and brain chemistry!
To develop the mind of Christ we must continually transform our mind, will, intellect and emotions. The transformation is possible through immersing ourselves in God’s Word, and then obeying it. We have to apply it and become Godly decision-makers for transformation to occur. This is why I am so relentless about teaching decision-making strategies and skills.
Today, measure every influence in the light of God’s Word … and reject those that don’t line up. Quit watching that television program. Don’t read that book. Choose what is right over what is easy or popular, or what feels good. Be willing to take a stand. Don’t be “normal”. Be special in Him and for Him. Your decision, choose well.
Prayer
Dear God, Open my eyes to the wrong influences in my life. Transform me into a new person by changing the way I think. Give me a deeper understanding of Your Word. Help me to live in obedience to Your will, and to make right choices even when they are difficult. I pray this and all prayers in the name of the One who never settled for normal, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children say - AMEN!
The Truth
Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

Stepping Stones: Love One Another Through The Conflict
Editor’s Note: Today we celebrate Stepping Stones’ 2nd birthday and thanks to you, over 10,000 people get Stepping Stones each day. We get great encouragement and testimonials from you daily and we thank you so much. As a result of its popularity, Stepping Stones has led to Solomon’s Portico, our devotional for teens/young adults. Thank you, God, for using and blessing us through this community of Your children!
Transformational Thought
Conflict, such a powerful word … it conjures up many different feelings and tapes in our head. In today’s scripture, Paul exhorts believers to agree with one another, to love each other, and to work together with one mind and purpose.
Jesus’ last instructions, moments before he ascended to heaven, leave no doubt about what the church is to be doing: “And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
If we are to be effective witnesses, as Christians, we need to work together with one mind and purpose (the mind of Christ). Our witness can be hurt … and even destroyed … if we are involved in pride, bickering, gossip and other habits that can only lead to strife and division. We need to set aside personality conflicts, social differences, cliquishness, and anything else that divides us and keeps us from accomplishing the purpose God has for us and for those we are to minister to on His behalf.
Conflict is obviously more complex than this, but a ‘my kingdom come, my will be done’ instead of ‘Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done mentality’ is the key ingredient that steers the process to a fleshly demise instead of a God-glorifying experience.
Many excuses allow us to fall back on and avoid working through a conflict with another person. Don’t fall into the laziness trap or the addiction to comfort we all suffer from when you have this difficult but important decision to make. In the long run avoiding the conflict will be more harmful to you than the uneasiness you will feel while trying to solve the conflict.
Today, think of an area in your life in which you are experiencing division with a sister or brother in Christ. Are you putting Christ in the center? Your greatest need should be to please God and honor Him, not ease your own discomfort, guilt, or ego. Specifically acknowledge an incident or situation where you have failed in the area of relationship. Prayerfully examine how pride might be playing a role in the division. Your decision, choose well.
Prayer
My Father and my Lord, Please forgive me for sometimes allowing pride or other wrongful attitudes to lead to division with my brothers and sisters in Christ. Help me to do my part in walking in unity so that we all might be more effective witnesses for Jesus and accomplish what You have called us to do. Help me build courage to withstand the pain, hurt, or anger I sometimes feel in conflicts, knowing You can provide more to me in that pain than in the good times. I pray this and all prayers for the one was the perfect witness, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children say - AMEN!
The Truth
Then make me truly happy by agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, loving one another, and working together with one mind and purpose.

Stepping Stones: Be Strong and Courageous
Transformational Thought
When our oldest daughter, Dominique, was about four years old, we took her to Dairy Queen to see the Easter Bunny. While driving there, I was getting so excited to see her reaction. We walked in and there was a 6 foot tall Easter Bunny. Poor Dominique was scared and terrified, because she was expecting a little six-inch Easter Bunny. She was afraid the 6 foot Easter Bunny was going to attack her. She cried and didn’t take her eyes off him for one second … and never even touched her beloved ice cream. Needless to say, after being unable to console her, we left very quickly.
We have all experienced fear and discouragement at times. In today’s scripture God is speaking to Joshua, telling him to be strong and courageous. “Do not be afraid or discouraged.” How is this possible?
Joshua was faced with the tremendous responsibility of leading the Israelites into the Promised Land, conquering the land, and setting up residence. There would be times of defeat … great challenges … biting criticism … and immense frustration. And yet God told him not to fear or be discouraged … “because the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
What a wonderful promise! As we submit to God, making Jesus Lord of our lives, we, too, can be assured that He will be with us wherever we go. He will protect us, comfort us, defend us, teach us, guide us, and love us unconditionally. No matter how bleak things may look, or what challenges or sorrows we may face, we can know that our heavenly Father is with us. And as we trust Him and walk in obedience, He will work all things together for our good and growth.
Are you feeling afraid or discouraged right now? Perhaps you don’t feel as though God is with you. The good news is that feelings can lie … but God’s promises are always true.
Today, no matter what your circumstances, you can be strong and courageous. Think about where you get your confidence from as you engage in your everyday activities … or when the pressure is on. Does your confidence come from you? If so, your confidence reserve is pretty shallow and will soon run out. Your confidence needs to come from God … from His promises, teachings, and character. WITHIN REACH will help you see where your confidence comes from and how to tap into God and the Holy Spirit for your confidence and empowerment.
Prayer
My Father and my Lord, Thank You that I can always count on You. Even though I don’t always sense Your presence, help me to remember Your Word - that You are always with me. Help me to focus on You, not on the circumstances. Help me to be strong and courageous. I pray this and all prayers for the one who teaches us how to be strong and courageous, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children say - AMEN!
The Truth
This is my command - be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.

Stepping Stones: What Are You An Activist For?

Stepping Stones: Are You in Denial?
Transformational Thought
A while back, I was caught by surprise, but learned something very important, so let me share it with you. I was shopping at my favorite butcher shop when the butcher asked: “could I ask you a personal question?” I have always exchanged pleasantries with this guy, but now he had a serious question. I said “sure.” He asked; “Where do you get your source of happiness…you are always smiling.”
I knew exactly where I get my source of happiness and joy, but I was caught off guard. So I gave him a lame answer; “Happiness is a choice…I choose to be happy.” I could tell he was disappointed in my answer.
Wow, so was I. Did that really just pop out of my mouth? It was as if someone was asking me if I know Jesus, and I was denying my association with Jesus. I can’t believe I was being like Peter and denying my Lord so blatantly.
A few days following that encounter I was reading 1 Peter and came across 3:15 where we are instructed to always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you. I went back to the butcher the next day and told him that I didn’t give him the quality response that his question deserved. I told him in front of listening customers that my happiness and joy comes from living within the hope and promise of salvation…the salvation made possible by Jesus Christ. I told him I was a struggling Christian, and then I asked him about his relationship with God.
It’s rare for someone to ask such a direct question of us, but when they do, scripture tells us to be ready. We are more ready when we see God in all things. You see I am trying to grow my awareness, my spiritual radar, to see God in all aspects of my life, 24/7. When we only connect with Him on Sunday, or before meals, or when we really need His help during stormy times, then we will only see Him as a small accessory in our life. The reality, He is our life and in all facets of our life. We can’t escape Him, nor would we ever want to.
Today, think how you might respond when someone asks you the reason for the hope within you. Can you articulate to yourself the impact your faith and God’s actions have in your daily, moment-to-moment living. This is what we need to show and tell others. Your decision, choose well.
Prayer
Dear Father, I come to you with a thankful heart. I recognize Your Son, Jesus Christ, as my Lord and I trust Him for the strength I so desperately need to lead a God-pleasing life. Help me, Lord, to not be speechless when called upon to defend my faith and to spread Your message of forgiveness, faith, love and hope. Help me do so with gentleness and respect. Help me, Lord, to be a lighthouse for those in need. I pray with the authority granted to me through Jesus Christ; and all God’s people said – AMEN!
The Truth
In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
Matthew 5:16
But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear;

But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear;

Stepping Stones: How Do You Define Safe?
Transformational Tip
In 2006, a good friend, Todd Hendricks, asked me to lead a team into Iraq, at the request of the Kurdistan Minister of Health, to teach psychiatry and counseling skills to their health systems personnel. No other American(or even international) team had been permitted to go in to Iraq for this purpose. Regular bombings…turmoil…America uncertain about whether to keep forces in or withdraw…Shiite and Sunni hatred and violence daily towards each other...everybody suspicious of each other.
After a time of prayer, I told Todd, “I’m in!” As I excitedly told people, they asked, “why are you putting yourself in such danger,” and “aren’t you afraid. “ I had no fear as I had been praying for God to use our unique Lighthouse Network ministry in unique ways.
David was out on the battlefield…mono et mono….face to face against a world champion giant….no armor…just a slingshot and several pebbles. Seems like a dangerous place to most. Actually, it was the best place for him because that is where God wanted him….and David knew it…had perfect peace freeing him to channel God’s preparation and power in his life.
Be willing to go out on a limb if that is where God leads you. If He is leading you there, it is by far the safest place to be. Overly familiar surroundings may feel safe, but they can also lull you into a sleepy, yet dangerous, self-reliance. When out on a limb with your Lord, you will stay alert, communicating with Him continually, holding onto His hand in trusting dependence. Follow God wherever He may lead you…and let the shelter of His presence keep you safe. Remember, He knows what the future holds, not you.
Today, ask yourself, “where is God pushing me?” “I am resisting?” and “What am I afraid of?” Follow it with, “how is that working for me?”. Does He want me to…forgive someone…reach out to someone…give up something or someone…be content with something I already have…say something I am afraid to. Usually it is not a geographical place He pushes us to, but rather a spiritual or psychological place we are afraid to allow God to take us.
Go where He leads, it is the safest place…try it…TODAY! My 2007 trip to Iraq…We had a bodyguard, felt very safe, and it was one of the greatest and most unique experiences of my life.
Prayer
Dear Father God, You know Lord that I really am not a risk taker…I like to play it safe. However, it is my heartfelt desire to stay close to You…even if that means going out on a limb with and for You. When I feel more self reliant, I confess that these are the times when I tend to forget about You. I pray Lord, that You will help me follow You with confidence. I pray this in the name of the author of my faith and courage, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children say – AMEN!
The Truth
The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way.
Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the LORD upholdeth him with his hand.
Psalm 37:23-24
Thou shalt hide them in the secret of thy presence from the pride of man: thou shalt keep them secretly in a pavilion from the strife of tongues.
Psalm 31:20
Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Stepping Stones: Be Strong and Courageous
Transformational Tip
We have all experienced fear and discouragement at times. In today’s scripture God is speaking to Joshua, telling him to be strong and courageous. “Do not be afraid or discouraged.” How is this possible?
Joshua was faced with the tremendous responsibility of leading the Israelites into the Promised Land, conquering the land and setting up residence. There would be times of defeat…great challenges…biting criticism…and immense frustration. And yet God told him not to fear or be discouraged…“because the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
What a wonderful promise! As we submit to God, making Jesus Lord of our life, we too can be assured that He will be with us wherever we go. He will protect us, comfort us, defend us, teach us, guide us, and love us unconditionally. No matter how bleak things might look, or what challenges or sorrows we face, we can know that our heavenly Father is with us…and that as we trust Him and walk in obedience, He will work all things together for our good and growth.
Are you feeling afraid or discouraged right now? Perhaps you don’t feel as though God is with you. The good news is that feelings can lie…but God’s promises are always true.
Today, no matter what your circumstances, you can be strong and courageous… think about where you get your confidence in everyday activities…or when the pressure is on. Does your confidence come from you?...if so, your confidence reserve is pretty shallow and will soon run out. Your confidence needs to come from God…His promises, teachings, and character.

Prayer
My Father and my Lord, Thank You that I can always count on You. Even though I don’t always sense Your presence, help me to remember from Your Word that You are always with me.
Joshua 1:9
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

Stepping Stones: What Do You Have To Renounce?
Transformational Tip
Wow, I’m so glad I got that off my chest…Talking about it doesn’t hurt as much as I thought it would…I feel better now that the cat’s out of the bag…I couldn’t keep that in any longer, one more minute and I was going to blow.
We hear statements like this a lot…I’ve even said it myself, and you probably have too(or at least thought these statements to your self). We periodically struggle with insecurity and inadequacy, so our natural tendency is to hide our faults. We keep our skeletons in the closet…fearing the opinions, judgment, ridicule, or rejection we fear would come if someone saw our inner activities broadcast on the big screen for others to see.
In the dark, away from God’s light, these wounds, faults, dysfunctions seem even scarier and more dangerous. Satan tricks us into thinking that isolating them will kill them, but what will transform them is the Light…Jesus, and all Jesus came to do for us and in us.
Are there any thoughts that you have that you do not want brought out into the light? Thoughts that your ‘sense of honor’, pride, shame, or guilt keep hidden away in secret places of your heart and mind? These shameful thoughts hidden in secret places directly and indirectly take their toll on our daily lives. The greatest penalty; these issues make it impossible to have clear lenses to see God through, and derail our pursuit of the Mind of Christ.
Today, examine your thoughts from God’s perspective and renounce the hidden things of shame in your life. Bring that trash up from the basement and throw it out once and for all. Let someone trusted know about your secret files. Ask their advice…ask them for Biblical backup for the advice…then do it. Click here to share with the Stepping Stones community about renouncing secret and shameful ways.
Prayer
Dear Father God – teach me how to pray. I confess Father that I am full of shameful and secret things…things I try to push down into my sub-consciousness. I know, Lord, that these things work hard at keeping my thoughts away from you, so I denounce these thoughts of envy, anger, lust, regret and any thoughts that I have kept in secret. Show me who I can trust to bring these issues into Your Light. I pray this in the name of the one who shines perfect light on all my shame and sin, Jesus Christ; And all the children of the world say - AMEN!
The Truth
Rather, we have renounced secret and shameful ways; we do not use deception, nor do we distort the word of God. On the contrary, by setting forth the truth plainly we commend ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God.
2 Corinthians 4:2
I put this in human terms because you are weak in your natural selves. Just as you used to offer the parts of your body in slavery to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer them in slavery to righteousness leading to holiness.

Stepping Stones: Look Inwardly With Courage
Transformational Tip
As Christians, our goal must be to be fully utilized by God. This can only happen after we allow Him to show us the deep, hidden areas of our own character. To do so requires the courage to look inwardly. We are so quick to diagnose and judge others...let us take that energy and time to examine ourselves. It's astounding how ignorant we are about our true selves. We rarely recognize the distortions, laziness, envy, and pride held within us. We must dump the idea that we understand ourselves...the only one who truly understands and knows us is God.
To look inwardly you need alone time with God. When only through God's lenses, can you see your misguided desires and affections...and all those things that keep you from Him.
Today, take some time to ask yourself, "what outranked God... what was more important to me than pleasing God, than keeping the Holy Spirit on the throne of my life?" when you examine an area of temptation or a wrong decision you made today or recently. Really doing heart diagnostics can be painful, but courageously being honest with yourself will open the door to reaping the fruit of the spirit and growing the mind of Christ.
Prayer
Dear Father God,
I am so thankful that You are God with us - constantly and eternally. This fact alone is sufficient to fill my days and nights with joy...thank You my Lord. Sadly though my mind slips out of focus and I begin looking outwardly at the broken world around me. I know by Your Word that I learn and grow in You best when I am alone with You. I desire this time alone with You Lord; please help me push away all the distractions that keep me from being alone with You. When we are alone, I ask that You give me the courage to look deeply inside myself; let me be honest with myself so that I may be honest and open with You. Give me your lenses to see my core accurately. I pray to You in the name of Your Son Jesus - AMEN!
The Truth
...when he was alone with his own disciples, he explained everything.
Mark 4:34
Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts!
And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!
Psalm 139:23-24
All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: "The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel"-which means, "God with us."
