Transformational Tip
The Great American Way…Capitalism… the Land of Independence...Self-Sufficiency…Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. We are raised and taught, “take care of yourself, don’t be a burden on others, and it’s the weak that are dependent on something or somebody else.” I want to do life on my own!
If you were ever a victim of abuse of any kind, you no doubt felt you had no control in the situation…whether it was mild, like ridicule or harshness from your parents, to neglect in a dating relationship, to misuse of power by someone in authority, or any other form of mistreatment. Or the abuse might have been extreme or violent…bullying, sexual coercion while dating, to mugging, and sexual molestation, even rape. No one has escaped all mistreatment.
We associate the abuse with being out of control, so we make a promise to ourselves to never let ourselves be in that dependent position again. So now we try to control most situations…including every relationship in our life...to make sure our vulnerability never answers the door when potential abuse knocks. Now, we probably have a hard time being vulnerable to being dependent on God and His controlling hand in our life.
I know, I was hardheaded about turning my life over to Him…and still struggle with it. But I tried being independent, controlling my life…it landed me in jail, with alcohol and a fear of other’s opinions and feelings as my master.
None of us can be free to become all we were meant to be until we recognize that God is in control…that He loves us and wants to care for us. We are fooling ourselves when we think we can make it on our own through this life. We need to lean on Him. On His wisdom, strength, love, character, promises…and His son.
Today, remember that this man you read about, Jesus, loves you. He is inviting you to put your hands in His and let Him guide you and help you through all circumstances of life…regardless of what ever has happened in the past. Stop trying to figure everything out on your own. Stop trying to forge through life depending on your own strength and understanding. Let Jesus love you. Let Him help you reach your full potential and accomplish all the good things he has called you to do. He actually died for you…for no reason other than He loved His father…AND YOU! Prayer
Dear Father, forgive me for thinking I could make it through life on my own. I need Your help and Your guidance in everything I do. Help me to stop trying to control everything…help me to listen to Your voice…to obey You…to trust You. I have leaned on myself and what the world offers and my hole only got deeper. Thanks for loving me more than I love me and for showing me how much You really love me thru Your taking my penalty and place on the cross. I pray this in the name of the One was sent to take my place, and teach and guide me, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children say - AMEN!

Stepping Stones: Let’s Talk About Real Security
Transformational Tip
I have been rich and I have been poor. I have been well fed and I have been hungry. And I am learning the secret of being content in any situation.
Many of my friends have, and continue to experience, severe financial loss in the current economic climate. Stock market woes…Investment values plummeting… Retirement funds disappearing. Even without job loss, this downhill slide can be frightening. Coupled with job loss, it can be devastating…but it doesn't have to be.
In today's scripture the apostle Paul tells us that he has experienced both riches and poverty, but that he has reached a point where his joy and his well-being don't depend on the security of his bank account. No matter what he is going through, he knows that God will give him the strength to make it through.
God has and will continue to do the same for you.
As human beings, we all have a tendency to place our confidence in things we can see or control. Looking at a solid report on our investments…our kids doing well…status at work, church or community can give us a feeling of security. But it’s based on what is happening all around us, we are being reminded all too clearly that these things are not secure, that they can disappear in a moment.
Today, no matter what your circumstances, remember that Jesus is with you. He will give you the strength you need. As you lean on, and trust in, and obey Him, He will make a way. Really, what other options can you turn to that have the power, character, and track record than the all powerful creator of all things?

Dear Father, help me remember that even if all my investments fail and my retirement fund collapses, marriage struggles, or kids falter…You haven't changed. I know that Your love for me will never change and that with you I can make it…no matter what. Thank You Father. All glory to You my Lord. I pray this in the name of the One You sent to secure my place in eternity, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children say - AMEN!

Stepping Stones: Happy Anniversary!

Today marks the one year anniversary of the Stepping Stones Daily Devotional. Over this past year 600,000 devotionals have gone out to the readers. We thank those of you who have helped us grow. We started with 600/day and are now at 2700+/day…around the world! Thank you for spreading it to those you love and want to help and praise God for your wonderful stories we have been privileged to be a part of.
We are very excited about how devotional time impacts our lives and have received much encouragement to continue to share our teachings and devotionals with others. As we have shared our teachings, many have benefited greatly and have grown in their understanding of God, the Bible, and how to live as God desires us to live. All glory to You, our Father. It is our hope and prayer that you, too, will receive these gifts.
As believers we are all called to acknowledge Christ before others…and when we do, Jesus tells us that He will acknowledge us in the presence of God.
Today, find some small way to practice Christ’s teaching and share the Gospel with others. Draw those around you to Christ like fishermen that pull fish into their boat with nets. Foreword one of your favorite Stepping Stones Devotionals to those you know will benefit.

Lighthouse’s Recommended Use of the Devotional
The first step in maximizing the potential offered by the Stepping Stones Daily Devotional is to be a believer in Jesus Christ. This means you admit your sin separates you from God and you then accept Jesus Christ as your personal Savior so that you are in clear eternal relationship with God under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. If you are not already a believer, it is our hope and prayer that our devotional will help bring you to a place where you will “believe and receive” the grace and love God has for you.
The second step is to make sure you are clear headed, focused, and can concentrate for a couple of minutes….and now you are ready to use the devotional.
1. Read the Transformational Tip and think how it relates to your life. Think of how you can go just one stepping stone closer, very practically, to your goal of fulfilling your God-given potential.
2. Pray, talk to God directly. This is our actual prayer and you can use it directly or as an example of how you can talk to God about the tip and how you want and need His guidance, help, and power to get to the next stepping stone on your path to Christ-likeness. Ask God to open your eyes to His truth and strength to act according to His will. Insert your personal praise and thanksgiving, as well as petitions and special requests. More importantly, praying helps build your relationship with God. Don’t do all the talking…remember to listen to God.
3. Read the Bible passage to see that the Bible does have answers for everyday life. If you have time at first reading, open the Bible and read before and after the verses and absorb as much as you can, but with particular focus on the transformational tip and its practical application to your life.

Stepping Stones: Peace; The Great Elixir
Transformational Tip
A few years back, I injured the rotator cuff in my shoulder. It produced a pain that varied from chronic to acute…affecting my daily life. Using that arm for most anything always made things worse. Of course, I waited much too long before seeking medical attention. The doc told me the tendons in my shoulder were swollen and inflamed, and the swelling was causing the tendons to get pinched between some bones. After an injection to quiet down the inflammation and a little rest, all went back to normal.
I think it’s safe to say that most people, actually, let me say it with more strength, ALL people are “the walking wounded” (spiritual wounded). Of course the wounds and injuries vary in severity, but we all carry wounds around with us. And those wounds carry with them a degree of pain. We try to escape the pain in good and not-so-good ways, because we all seek comfort and peace.
And unfortunately, our pain level often goes from bad to worse by the decisions and the choices we make in our search for comfort. It’s the proverbial vicious downward cycle. Our pain, caused by new and old wounds, evokes emotions, which in turn distorts our decision making process(we choke). To go back to my shoulder injury; using my arm while the tendons were inflamed added more pain.
The injection we need to stop this hurtful cycle is God’s peace. The promise of peace is abundant throughout the Holy Bible. An antonym for peace is uproar, a highly emotional state. And while emotions are critical to us (they act as a very effective warning system), it is not the state of mind in which to make decisions. Making decisions during times of high emotion is a huge handicap…and many times those decisions only increase the inflammation, pain and emotional state.
Today, reflect back on some decisions that you regret…what kind of emotions pushed your decision-making? How do you think your decision-making process would have gone if you had a powerful Peace in the midst of that event? Seek and accept the peace promised by your Lord before you take any important decisions.

Infuse me, Father, with Your Holy Spirit, the Spirit that Jesus called the great comforter, so that I may experience peace through good weather as well as storms. I pray this in the name of the Prince of Peace, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children say - AMEN!

The LORD gives strength to his people; the LORD blesses his people with peace.

do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Stepping Stones: When I say I am a Christian…
Transformational Tip
Yesterday I heard yet again some condescending comments from a non-believer about Christianity. He said that being a Christian was the easy way out; that it was a life that accepted no responsibility and that carried a “cant-lose” mentality. He was right about the cant lose…but for the wrong reasoning.
He said that when things go right for us Christians we say “see, it’s working.” And that when things go wrong we say “…the will of God” and we accept no responsibility.
I gave him my perspective. I told him that when I say that "I am a Christian.”
• I'm not saying, “I’m holier than thou…” I'm saying, “I am a simple sinner who received God's grace.”
• I am not shouting that “I am clean living…” I'm whispering, "I was lost, but now I'm found and forgiven."
• I don't speak with pride…I'm confessing that I stumble daily along my path and need Christ as my lighthouse.
• I'm not trying to be strong…I'm admitting that I'm weak and need His strength.
• I'm not bragging of success…I'm admitting on my own I have failed, but through Him, I can experience temporal and eternal victory.
• I'm not claiming to be perfect…my flaws are many and run deep, but I am claiming that God always loves and advocates for me.
• I’m not saying I am pain free; I still feel the sting of pain - I have my share of heartaches, but now I call on His name and He does comfort me.
Today, be mindful of the perceptions you give others about your Christianity. Help others understand the true meaning of being a Christian. Are you exhibiting the behavior and living the life taught us by Christ? They are watching. Blessed is the man who does not fall away on account of me."

Stepping Stones: Who Wants To Be Meek?
Transformational Tip
Due to work, I spend a lot of time in airports…luckily, I love to people watch. During a recent trip, I observed a sad but enlightening encounter between two strangers. The aggressor attempted to initiate a fight with another passenger over a place in the check-in line. But the target of the aggression would have no part of it; he gently stepped aside and let the provoker go first. I felt compassion for the one who stepped aside. The word that came to mind was “meek.”
I had often thought someone who is meek must be very quiet and without opinion. Someone who would let anyone walk all over them. Someone with no backbone…afraid and avoidant of conflict.
Searching the Scriptures for insight, I started “meek” really described a way of living and a state of mind—one that I was pretty sure I wasn’t doing and didn’t have. Reflecting back on the passenger, I realized he wasn’t weak, he was humble. He wasn’t letting someone walk over him…he showed kindness and good judgment. This was meek.
Jesus talks about those who are meek in the Beatitudes (part of the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew). It’s one in a list of attributes or attitudes defining how believers ought to live. Those who are meek are those who are humble before God. They appreciate their place and understand how they relate to their Creator. Basically, they understand that the world does not revolve around them, but God. He is the general manager of their universe, not vice versa. Thy kingdom come, not my kingdom come.

Due to work, I spend a lot of time in airports…luckily, I love to people watch. During a recent trip, I observed a sad but enlightening encounter between two strangers. The aggressor attempted to initiate a fight with another passenger over a place in the check-in line. But the target of the aggression would have no part of it; he gently stepped aside and let the provoker go first. I felt compassion for the one who stepped aside. The word that came to mind was “meek.”
I had often thought someone who is meek must be very quiet and without opinion. Someone who would let anyone walk all over them. Someone with no backbone…afraid and avoidant of conflict.
Searching the Scriptures for insight, I started “meek” really described a way of living and a state of mind—one that I was pretty sure I wasn’t doing and didn’t have. Reflecting back on the passenger, I realized he wasn’t weak, he was humble. He wasn’t letting someone walk over him…he showed kindness and good judgment. This was meek.
Jesus talks about those who are meek in the Beatitudes (part of the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew). It’s one in a list of attributes or attitudes defining how believers ought to live. Stepping Stones: Be Exhausted For the Right Reason
Transformational Tip
You may be physically exhausted from “doing.” Attending service, participating in small groups, volunteering…doing stuff in the name of service. But a deeper and more dangerous form of exhaustion is the spiritual type. This type of exhaustion comes from giving, and not so much from of doing.
Jesus said to Peter - "Feed My sheep," but He gave Peter nothing to feed them with. We are all called to go feed His sheep…the process of being made “broken bread” and “poured out wine,” means that you will be the nourishment for other’s souls until they learn to feed on God. Before they learn to draw on the life of the Lord Jesus directly, they have to draw on it through you. This is how God uses us to minister to others. We are called to serve, but this process has the potential to deplete and exhaust us.
We shouldn’t be exhausted, rather we should feel emptied…we need not remain emptied, for we can return to the Source of all energy to always refuel. God’s Word promises you strength and power, and the Holy Spirit is that energy source that we can tap into to directly refuel us for continued service.
Today, ask yourself the question, “Am I exhausted for the right reasons?” Be exhausted because you are giving, not because you are forgetting to refuel through the Holy Spirit, His Word, and His Armor. Stepping Stones: Without Him, We Crack
Transformational Tip
It’s still amazing to me the sheer number of TV channels available to us…you can find something playing on almost any topic. I was flipping channels the other day and stumbled on a program on vintage guitars.
The narrator was explaining that the finest acoustic guitars are made from very thin layers of tone woods…the thinness contributing to the quality of sound. He went on to say how critical it is to keep the guitar at the wood’s natural moisture level, about 45% relative humidity. If not, the wood cracks and the tone changes. If cracked, the once beautiful tone takes on a deadened sound. Of course you can still play it, but it will never sound like it was built to sound.
The guitar was then placed in a room with 45% humidity; three days later the wood expanded to it original size, the cracks closed and the guitar played and sounded like new. The narrator went on to use the human body as a comparison. Talked about how we are made up primarily of water…how things start to go seriously wrong if we become dehydrated. It got me thinking.
We were created by God, designed in His image…finer than the finest instrument, created by our Lord to make spiritual music…fruit of our faith to glorify His name. And as the guitar needs moisture to keep from cracking…we need to be filled with the Holy Spirit and God’s Grace. We need it in and around us. In the absence of His flowing, living water, we crack. Like the cracked guitar, we can still make music…but the sound has deadness to it.
Today, think about how well hydrated your spirit and soul are. Does your sound replicate that of a fine instrument…or is it muted with an unwanted deadness? Soak in the living waters that flow from Jesus Christ…truly believe in and practice His teachings and watch those cracks close up before your eyes. Dear Father God, I come to You Father dry, parched, dehydrated and cracked. I know You created me to make spiritual music, but all that is coming from me lately are dead notes. Fill me, Father, with “streams of living water” so that my cracks heal and close, and that I make the beautiful music you intended for me. Thank You, Lord, for Your Son Jesus Christ, who gave us life and gave it so freely. I pray this in the name of the One who filled all my cracks and heart; and all God’s children say - AMEN!

Stepping Stones: Mystery and Power of Romance
Transformational Tip
Valentine’s Day really reminds us about the amazing experience of romance. While mostly everyone admits this day has become too commercial, it does serve as a powerful reminder about the beauty of true romance.
No matter how we try (even with the best greeting card) to describe or define romance, it remains a mystery only God truly understands and actually delivers. Like with all aspects of life, the Bible remains the only real source…the truth. In Solomon’s Song of Songs, we get a glimpse of the mystery and power of romance.
In this most evocative description of romantic love, we are taught that it means both intimacy and intense emotional excitement. We see how deep affection inspires desire and complete appreciation for another….that being romantic means to pursue the object of our affection.
But most importantly, we learn that God intended human romance to culminate in the unbreakable bond of married love…and spiritual romance to culminate in our unbreakable bond through Christ with God, forever.
You see, the ultimate romance was God pursuing us, not wanting to lose us, sending Jesus down from heaven, Jesus giving His life and bearing up all the evil on the cross, so we could have intimate and eternal relationship with God. All this even though we cheat on Him and pursue other lovers right in front of Him. He is relentless in His pursuit and desire to woo us and take care of our every need.
Today, in addition to or in replacement of the card, flowers, and candy, read passages from Song of Songs to your Valentine. Our Lord and God would not have provided us with this scriptural celebration of love and romance unless He intended it as an inspiring example for us to use. Stepping Stones: Darkness - Not Always Bad
Transformational Tip
Darkness – typically thought of as bad. Devoid of light, nightfall, blackened, lost, secret, closed…blinded. The Bible often uses darkness as meaning “not in God’s light.” As a child I was terribly frightened of the dark…actually carried that fear well into adulthood.
But, I have learned through personal experience that darkness is not all bad…and darkness does not have to be synonymous with the absence of God. Just maybe, when darkness comes, it signifies that we are under the shelter and in the shadow of our Lord(Ps 91:1). We have discussed the important concept of knowing that as children of God, nothing happens to you that He has not allowed.
During times of darkness there are treasures to be found (Isaiah 45:3)…learning to be had, growth to be gained, disciplining to become a disciple, strengthening for the attacks to come. When darkness comes, most run from it, distract themselves in it through their escapes/idols/addictions…or simply sleepwalk through it.
Today, when you find yourself in the midst of physiological or spiritual darkness turn to your God for strength. Don’t run from it; rather look for the treasures in those secret places. While in the dark turn to His Presence…His Word…His Spirit. And you will soon see His Lighthouse guiding you step by step.

When I experience times of darkness – times that You could have prevented – it sometimes feels as if You are being careless with me. I pray Father that You equip me to navigate in the darkness…and that You will teach me how to use that equipment. I pray this in the name of the one you sent who experienced the darkest of times while paying for my sins, Jesus Christ; And all God’s children say - AMEN!

I will give you the treasures of darkness, riches stored in secret places, so that you may know that I am the LORD, the God of Israel, who summons you by name.
Isaiah 45:3
So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.

Stepping Stones: Eternity or One-Night Stands?

Every once in a while, I hear, or think of a question that makes God, Jesus, and Christianity so real, so definitive. An example is someone asking me who I thought Jesus was. I was given two choices for the following question. Based on what Jesus claimed, was He honest and is the Son of God and Savior of all mankind…or was he a liar and a mad man?
You see, with this question there really isn’t any in between answer. Based on who He said He was, either you believe Him or not. If you don’t believe He is the Son of God, then His claims are lunacy. In fact, as a psychiatrist, I have confined some delusional or manic individuals claiming to be God, Jesus, the Antichrist, or the Chosen One.
So I will ask you a similar question; do you believe in the eternity promised by God and delivered by Jesus Christ? If your answer is yes, then I say Halleluiah! If your answer is no…well then, life must feel like a continuous series of one-night stands.
Running from person to object to event…to find happiness, value, connection… the desires of your heart. Coming up empty, then trying something else. You know, the lasting power and fulfillment of one-night stands. Some momentary highs, but heartache, rejection, ongoing chasing and coming up short. Just constant teases, never the real lasting, deep romance. How sad is that?
Today, think of spending your days as a string of commitments leading to God’s promise of eternity. Make God your exclusive God with a life-long commitment to Him and His truth. If you delight and are all in with Him, you will have the desires of your heart and won’t waste your time on one-night stands. Dear Father God, Most of my life has been a string of disjointed pursuits. I had no beliefs, never thought I would change. Stepping Stones: The 60/60 Rule

Yes, that big snow storm did hit...again. In the midst of shoveling snow, I learned a great lesson about relationships.
I’m new to this neighborhood, and had the opportunity to meet my next door neighbor as we were both shoveling snow. He was a bit ahead of me…I was still on my driveway while he was shoveling the public sidewalk that ran in front of all the houses. As he shoveled his way on the sideway coming toward me, I noticed that he went well beyond his property line; he shoveled about 20 feet of my sidewalk. I thanked him, and then he told me about the 60/60 rule.
He said he learned some time ago that if you operate under the 50/50 rule (meaning you do your part and I’ll do mine) many things fall between the cracks. That when people shoot for the 50% mark…sometimes they fall short unintentionally…or are intentionally a little stingy or tight. He said; “When we do 60%, we are ensuring an overlap and that nothing falls through the crack.”
How thankful we should be that God doesn’t just do 50 or 60%. He gave it all for our salvation, then continues forgiving…over and over…extending more and accepting less than our 50%.
I never really see the Bible say, “well, just meet them half way.”
Today, think about the difference it would make in your life if you and those around you followed the 60/60 rule. Go ahead and give 60% today and see what happens. Think about doing 60% instead of your half of the work…paying 60% of the dinner check…accepting 60% of the blame for that failed relationship. Stepping Stones: The Burning Question
Transformational Tip
Yes, you have accepted Jesus as your savior... but have you asked yourself the next tburning question?
Three years back I lost my younger brother to cancer. Thankfully, Allen knew Christ and was ready to move onto eternity for complete and ultimate healing. Allen was a loving and dedicated husband and father…my neighbor and best friend. While deep sadness from his loss remains, what God taught those of us close to Allen during his fight has changed our lives. Here’s just one example.
During Allen’s final days he was an inpatient at a cancer treatment center. In addition to the medical staff, there were a team of ministers, priest, nuns and others constantly available for support, prayer, questions for the patients and their families. One of those was an 82-year-old nun…a retired missionary who spent her days visiting with the patients. Allen and Sister became friends.
On this particular day, Allen had received yet more devastating news about the spreading of his cancer. As he was sharing the news with me, Sister stopped in for her daily visit with Allen. Allen told her the news; Sister calmly asked Allen; “What can I do for you?”
Allen told her that he had this question that was plaguing him; he didn’t know if he should be praying for the healing promised in God’s Word…of if he should be praying to align his fate and future with the will of God…whatever that may be. Sister said; “Let me ask you the burning question Allen, have you given yourself totally to God? Do that and He will answer your question.”
Today, ask yourself that burning question, “Have you given yourself totally to God?” If the answer is no, then ask yourself why not and to whom/what have you given yourself? Click here to share with the Stepping Stones community your perspective about that burning question.

Dear Father God, It is so beautiful and rewarding to see Your work even in difficult circumstances. Help me look to You, Father, during these and all other times. Stepping Stones: Newsweek Gets It Right
Transformational Tip
The Feb 8, 2010, Newsweek, amazingly hit a homerun with its cover story. The cover is incredible…a picture of a pill between 2 fingers with a sad expression and tears rolling down the cheeks. Caption- “Antidepressants Don’t Work: The debate over the nation’s most popular pills.” Flip the magazine upside down and the pill now looks happy…Caption – “Antidepressants Do Work.” So which is it?
If someone had heart disease, the cardiologist recommends more than meds. Surely, the patient needs to develop many skills…dietary, exercise, relaxation, stress mngmt, anger mngmt, relationship, communication, marriage, parenting, and conflict resolution skills would be a great start to cut into the heart disease. With these skills, over time, the heart disease gets better and better.
If the person with heart disease only takes meds but doesn’t implement any other skills, they will die of heart disease. We don’t say their meds pooped out, were a hoax, were controversial, or only had a placebo effect. We just realize the disease progressed because the person didn’t do what they needed to do to stop it.
What diseases our brain the most is wrong decisions. Psych meds can help a bit, but the real cure is skills…spiritual, relational, emotional, psychological skills. This is what the Bible tells us in Proverbs and many places in the New Testament. Take every thought captive and be a good decision-maker, that is what renews the mind…develops the mind of Christ.
So Newsweek is correct. Antidepressants help with symptoms(sometimes a lot), but don’t cure anything. Our medical community and society at large hasn’t yet realized that Spiritual awareness and Bible application really are the cure.
Today, start renewing your mind by making good decisions all through the day. You will be amazed at how much and quickly positive momentum is built up. Stepping Stones: Super Bowl Level Importance
Transformational Tip
100 million viewers, $2.8 million for a 30 second commercial, biggest betting day, 1 billion wings, day most pizzas ordered, worst day for domestic violence.
The Super Bowl is an unbelievable event…so much emotion, buildup, expectations. The winner is remembered and revered forever and the loser is branded a choker…forever. Commercials, halftime shows, and plays, players and personalities are seared in our mind or become societal icons.
One Super Bowl a year is enough…could you imagine 2 a year, or one per month, or weekly Super Bowls. We would be overwhelmed, on edge, and paralyzed.
Life is the same way. We have Super Bowl events…getting married, child’s birth, loved one’s passing, first day on the dream job, an affair, grand vacations, kid with a disability, first day of school. We have more playoff game level events and some more events that rank on the very-important-regular-season-game level.
The reality is, 99% of life is either average regular season or even preseason game in level of importance. The problem we have…we react to a lot of our daily events as if it is a Super Bowl or playoff game in importance and impact. These same events, we forget within 1-5 days. We can’t handle the emotional rollercoaster of 6 Super Bowls a year, let alone 3 Super Bowls each day, but many people get so wound up for really trivial events.
One of the phrases I say to patients that they repeat to me years later(even females) saying it really impacted them is, “does that event really rank as the ‘Super Bowl ‘ level importance you are giving it?” It really helps people have a more eternal, Godly perspective about everyday events.
Today, remember, Super Bowl magnitude events are only a several a year for most years. Look at how you react to most minor disruptions and ask yourself, “Self, is this situation really a Super Bowl in magnitude and long term impact?”. Dear Father God, thanks for being sovereign over all things…this truth, and faith in it gives me such peace if most situations. I confess though, that sometimes I over-react to the spiritual warfare and minutiae of the day and blow it into a Super Bowl level of importance. Give me discernment and the Mind of Christ to realize what really is important and what isn’t. I pray this in the name of the greatest ‘Super Bowl’ event of all time, Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection; And all God’s children say - AMEN!

And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? If then you are not able to do as small a thing as that, why are you anxious about the rest?

Stepping Stones: Super Bowl Memories

I’m a Steeler fan…born in Pittsburgh area…so Super Bowls in the 70’s, my teen years, were unbelievable memories as my beloved Steel Curtain smashed their way to a still unprecedented 4 championships in 6 years. Awesome memories!
For a while though, Super Bowl Sunday also conjured up some terrible memories. You see, form late high school through college and into medical school, I made many poor choices leading to a significant alcohol addiction.
Worst memory ever: Jan 25, 1987, Super Bowl Sunday…middle of medical school, an awesome future ahead of me. It started off at a party with a bunch of med school friends. Then through a series of progressively stupider decisions…lots of alcohol, won $600, more “celebration” at a strip bar, driving drunk (after a snow and ice storm), 6 counts of aggravated assault, a bruised and battered body, and I ended up in Newark jail. Could’ve gotten killed, or worse, several times that day.
Jail…it is what I needed at that time to protect me from myself, Satan, and the world…is a great place to think. And God really spoke to me. I finally listened and was able to realize, life according to my instruction book…my kingdom come, my will be done…wasn’t working. My hole kept getting deeper and deeper for a 10 year stretch. I finally understood what Jesus did for me, and what God wanted to do in my life…transformation and life abundant. I started to really love and delight in my Lord.
Well, each Super Sunday for the last 15 years I look back and thank God so much for what He has done for and through me. My terrible memories of Super Bowl Sunday have been wiped clean with the blood of Christ. What He has blessed me with since then…spiritually, maritally, my kids, friends, profession, and ministry, has been beyond my wildest dreams, especially compared to being in jail facing felony charges. (not testing God, I make sure I am a in a safe place Super Sunday)
Today, realize each decision, regardless how big or small, has definite ripples. Second, if you are experiencing difficulties, hope is in the Lord, not your efforts or abilities. Third, if you have done some terrible things in the past, God will forgive and help you move forward, even using those events to impact His kingdom. Dear Father God, You, Your love and grace, are truly amazing. I thank you for not leaving me even though I left you many times. Thanks for landing me in jail, so I finally could meet You and listen to what You had been trying to tell me for many years. Dear Father God, You, Your love and grace, are truly amazing. I thank you for not leaving me even though I left you many times. Thanks for landing me in jail, so I finally could meet You and listen to what You had been trying to tell me for many years. Thanks for tremendous opportunity to serve You and Your willingness to use me in Your service…it is truly humbling. Stepping Stones: Weathering a Spiritual SnowStorm?
Transformational Tip
Big snowstorm heading our way tonight - 12 to 20 inches! Like the masses, I too, went food shopping this morning. The grocery store and the shopping carts were chock-a-block full. The longest we would be home-bound by this storm will be something like 12-24 hours. However, most shoppers were purchasing weeks worth of supplies...all based on the fear of being without what they need to nourish and sustain their bodies for one day.
This mob scene made me wonder why I don't think more...no, worry more, about how well my spiritual cupboard is stocked; will I run out of blessing and grace? Will I have enough of God's goodness within me to make it through my next spiritual snow-storm?
Just imagine for a minute walking into a spiritual gifts and blessings supermarket. Shelves stocked to the ceiling...and all you have to do is fill up your cart. No check-out lines, no credit or debit cards...no need for cash. It's all free; already been paid for. The reason why we don't stock up for snow is because it costs money and I have limited room...God's supplies are free, and He made our heart to store as much as we want - no limit.
Today, know that the door is right before you. All you have to do is believe and then open that door to receive. That door follows you wherever you go...that store is open 24/7. The super store has everything you need to sustain you not only for days and weeks...but for eternity. What's in your shopping basket? Do you have enough to weather your next spiritual storm? Don't cheat yourself.

Dear Father God, I want to be have my name in the book of life. I pray for Your strength so that I may "overcome", so that I may stand firm to the end. I know Lord that just as sure as You finished the work of creation, Your Son Jesus finished the work of salvation. Thank You, Father. Help me Lord to focus on my spiritual vs. physical shopping basket. Help me grow the wisdom to endlessly shop in your store with free treasures...just for the taking. Fill my basket Father with all Your blessings. I pray this in the name of the one who You sent to save me, Jesus Christ; And all the children of the world say - AMEN!

Stepping Stone: The Call of God
Transformational Tip
God loves you more than anybody does. God also has intentionally, specifically, and uniquely designed each and every one of you. Wanting us to be fulfilled, knowing what will fulfill us, and designing us specifically to do what will fulfill us, God “calls” us for several missions that will fulfill us.
One of the calls each of us receives through scripture is the spreading of God’s word and promises. In today’s scripture, Paul states the call of God is to preach the gospel. The call of the Great Commission.
I don’t take this literally to mean we all need to become preachers and teachers of the bible. What I believe Paul means by "the gospel," is the reality of salvation in our Lord Jesus Christ. To preach it through our action, then to be able to speak it when the opening presents.
The one passion of Paul's life was to proclaim the Gospel of God…the message of salvation. He welcomed heart-breaks, disillusionments, tribulation to show him his need for the Gospel…because these things also kept him in unmoved devotion to the Gospel of God. These adversities also were ripe times for others to be open to the peace and freedom the Gospel delivers.
Today, think about one person who you could tell about God’s promise of salvation and eternity…so many are in need of that news. Right their name down someplace. Pray for them, then tell a brother/sister to pray for them and you. Call that person and let them know they are important to you and you care about them. Dear Father God, I thank You for the life I now live by faith in Your Son who loved me so much He gave Himself up for me. Thank You, Lord. I pray Father that You fill me with the Holy Spirit which will give me the courage, strength, and wisdom to “preach the Gospel.” Thank you for leading me to those that need to hear the good news. I pray for discernment, wisdom, courage, and excitement to proclaim the great gift you have given me and have for them. I pray this in the name of the one who You sent to save me, Jesus Christ; And all the children of the world say - AMEN!

Stepping Stones: Addictions - the Stone Gods
Transformational Tip
Yesterday we introduced a Biblical definition and description of addiction. Today is an experiential description. If you missed yesterday’s, read it now.
Nobody caught in an addiction wanted to feel trapped by it when they first started. Sadly, that is the ultimate end for all addictive behaviors.
Addictions are complete enslavement. Some people can feel it, while others are fooled into thinking they aren’t enslaved, but the reality is, we are a slave to the object that soothes. Being “trapped” is exactly where Satan wants us. But we aren’t stupid, so we usually have addiction objects that are well disguised.
People can find themselves obsessively and compulsively hooked on almost anything. The object of desire for an addict is always staring them right in the face. For some it’s using food as a source of comfort…For others it can be substances, control, relationships, anger, money, power(think parent tactics), the list is endless.
People caught up in an addiction have replaced God with an idol. They found something that promised to give a good time, or make things better or easier to deal with. What entered into their life as an understanding friend and savior quickly became a cruel master. The problem with idols is that they are chosen because we want what we believe they can give us. We believe that they will do something for us, so we give them our devotion. But they are actually stone gods…illusions and lies that trap us.
Today, know and spread the news that for the believer, we have great hope. We are not alone in our addiction. No matter where we are, the Holy Spirit is within us, and intercedes for us before God. Today’s scripture tells us that we are “crucified with Christ, therefore we no longer live, but it is Christ who lives within us.” This is the hope that we do not struggle alone. Christ is with us, and in Him we are free. When we are focused on Him, we can find the strength we need for freedom and victory over addictions.

I am so tired of trying to do it on my own. I am weary and exhausted, stressed out and alone. Come to me and save me. I pray this in the name of the one who You sent to save me, Jesus Christ; And all the children of the world say - AMEN!

Stepping Stones: Addictions – I Bet You Got One
Transformational Tip
If you thought this topic of addictions wasn’t for you, I am glad you are reading because…Newsflash: we are all addicts. We are all addicted to comfort. We all have a difficult time dealing with discomfort and especially pain. Even though we say “no pain, no gain”, it’s amazing how quickly we run from discomfort and pain.
You see, we are all born separated from God…that is the ultimate pain. This separation on the cross is what prompted even Jesus to ask God to have this “cup” pass from Him. As kids, we develop strategies to deal with pain. Unfortunately, we aren’t that mature and our “teachers” aren’t perfect, so developing coping mechanisms for physical, psychological, relational, emotional, and spiritual pain management are random, faulty, and short-sighted.
Solutions usually are flesh-driven options, knee-jerk reactions, immediate relievers. These “solutions” are Addiction Objects…things we go to and rely on instead of God in a repetitive way to fill needs that we should be looking to Him to fill. God might choose to provide other objects to fill them, but each time, we should look to Him first, not the object.
Addiction objects can be drugs, alcohol, food, pornography…but can also be anger(really any emotion), work, productivity, security, our intellect, kids, money, spending, martyrdom in the home, exercise, our looks/physique, sports/TV, hobbies, fighting, control, a relationship, sex…if it is something that comforts you or relieves some negative feeling, it can be an addiction object. People can find themselves obsessively and compulsively hooked on almost anything.
One of the great lies that Satan perpetrates on us…we use these addiction objects for self-protection, but the truth is they are really self-destructive. Just look at Solomon’s experiences in Ecclesiastes, as he pursues everything under the sun for comfort, leaving out God, and declares it is all vanity.
Today, let’s really do some honest reflection. When you are uneasy, lonely, stressed, etc, what do you go to first. Bingo, you found a probable addiction. Dear Father God, for many years I struggled with the pain of needing to be needed, accepted, valued. I turned to alcohol and drugs to soothe, but they caused more pain. You have freed me from my bondage to drugs and alcohol, but I still struggle with need for control. Help me tolerate discomfort as your grace is sufficient and help me grow the Mind of Christ to look to You as my ultimate Lighthouse of refuge and sanctuary. In Christ’s freeing name; And all the children of the world say - AMEN!

And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience-- among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.

But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
2 Corinthians 12:9,10
1 Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth, before the evil days come and the years draw near of which you will say, "I have no pleasure in them";
8 Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher; all is vanity.
10 The Preacher sought to find words of delight, and uprightly he wrote words of truth.
13 The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.
