Transformational Tip
Each year on Christmas Eve Day, I have a tradition of delivering a small gift to the people who provide a service to me throughout the year. The postman, butcher, coffee-shop owner, etc. I’ve been doing it for years. The gifts are always received with such happiness and delight.
This year, as I was walking toward the coffee shop to deliver a bottle of wine, I stopped into a local oriental rug store to pick up a rug I had ordered the week before. The owner of the store greeted me when I walked in. He’s been in that same location for 25 years now. He’s a wheeler-dealer, an all-business kind of guy…he rarely smiles. He and I had a fairly intense negotiation session over the rug I purchased the week prior.
As I reached to shake his hand he noticed the gift wrapped bottle of wine I was carrying (the coffee-shop owner’s gift, remember). Mistakenly assuming the gift was for him, he reached for it with his other hand and said; “this is for me?”…and then began thanking me profusely. His face lit up, almost in shock, and he started searching for something to give me in return. He also sells imported tea in his shop…so he grabbed a box containing a selection of exotic teas and gave it to me with pride and joy.
I was struck by how this simple act of (unintended) kindness brought such happiness to this man. For a few minutes that gift transformed this man’s life. We talked a bit more and then I left with my rug…the smile remained on his face the entire time. Based on his reaction…this man was in desperate need of some attention and kindness.
Today, think of one or two people whose lives you might change, even for a few minutes, by delivering some unexpected kindness. There are so many people around us who live in quiet desperation. I don’t think you will have to look far…maybe one of those people live in your same house. Be a Lighthouse and shine God’s love on others. Dear Father God, I thank You, Father, for leading me to this man who was in need of some kindness. I confess Lord that I am much too focused on myself…on my issues and needs. I pray that You fill me with Your Holy Spirit, and that Your Spirit guide me to those in need of love and attention. Let those in need see Your radiant light shining through me and onto them. I pray in the name of the one You sent to transform me though forgiveness and love, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children said - AMEN!

Stepping Stones: Called Alongside to Help
Transformational Tip
While the Christmas holidays are a time of joy and excitement for some, it’s also the most painful and lonely time of year for many others. Missing a loved one, the stress of not having enough money for gifts, not getting the gifts we expect, being estranged from someone we love…so many factors having the potential to bring us down. Especially after Christmas, when Christmas expectations go unmet, many people really struggle and suffer.
It’s the time of year when encouragement of others can do more than you can ever imagine. The Greek translation of the word encouragement is “parakletos”, which means “called alongside to help.” Encouragement can be offering an uplifting word, but it can also be so much more than that.
Showing someone they have value, dignity, and are deserving of respect by you taking action…do something for them…has amazing power over people. Show them they matter to you and to God by putting aside your needs in favor of theirs. The idea they are created in God’s image, have value, and God sacrificed His son for them needs to be tangibly brought to them. You are the vehicle God will use to get them this life-saving message.
Today, think of someone who needs you “alongside” of them to help. Your spouse, a parent, child…a friend. When you stand alongside someone to help them you become a powerful source of courage, hope and happiness. You have the Holy Spirit in you and will directly bring Him to them. Stepping Stones: Where Will You Put Christmas Tomorrow?

MERRY CHRISTMAS! Our prayers from Lighthouse Network to you is for a year of growing closer to God, maturing in your Christian walk (not just knowledge), and further developing the mind of Christ.
Today is a day of great celebration, remembering the greatest gift given to us. Many went to church yesterday or will go today. We will also celebrate today with those we love, exchanging gifts as symbols of our love, and making more memories and adding another chapter of Christmas traditions. But, to be honest with you, part of me gets angry about Christmas Day.
You see, as a Christian especially, we are so blessed that Christmas is really everyday…all 365 days a year, Christ and God’s grace is abundantly given to us. Every day is Christmas! Satan has put out a lie that all the other days are not special, are just ordinary at best, and often, are even terrible days. Unfortunately, we fall into the trap of believing those lies. Celebrating Christmas one day a year, I believe, allows people to enjoy it just one day, then carve it out of their life as they put it back in the attic with the Christmas tree ornaments, lights, wreaths, wrapping paper, table cloth and placemats, until the next Dec 25.
Today, make a commitment to yourself and God to not put Christmas away in the attic of your heart…keep it in the kitchen of your heart… accessible daily with the rest of your staples for surviving and living. Each day will have new meaning, your lenses will be more God-centered, and the goal of the mind of Christ will be much closer. Dear Father God, Christmas is beautiful and I am overwhelmed with Your love, gift, and death for me. Actually for me, a sinner like me. It is still so unbelievable that the King of Kings, Lord of Lords would actually die for me. I regret that I put Christmas away in the attic sometimes instead of living out of and in that joy daily. Help me see Your gift and presence daily, and to allow me to shine like a Lighthouse bringing Christmas to all those I contact, daily. I pray in the name of the star of Christmas, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children said - AMEN!

But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

Stepping Stones: Shopping…For What?

Well, Christmas is almost here…how are you doing with your shopping list? Shopping isn’t my thing, never was, never will be. Since I don’t like shopping, I got to be a Christmas Eve shopper…really is a lot of funner. People are in better moods…excitement in the air…less than 24 hours till Christmas…everything really festive wherever you go. Try it.
But, you see, shopping is about finding something to fill a need for someone. To me, shopping is for not a just a want, but a need. As a psychiatrist, as I think about “shopping” for something to help someone’s need, the items people need aren’t found in any store. Value…purpose…connection…identity…security…consistency… meaning… competence… love…relationship with our almighty Creator and Father, our God. These precious needs are what we all desire and need…what we are all yearning for. We wish they could be easily bought and given to us.
This is the true and amazing story of Christmas. God gave us the most loving and unbelievable gift of all time to really meet all our needs. It cost Him and Jesus a lot…but it is truly free to us. Really, it is the grandest gift ever given. That is what we are blessed to celebrate on Christmas Day.
Today, think how you will receive God’s gift, daily, to affect the issues you struggle with…to address and meet your needs. God has given you what you need, learn how to use it. MERRY CHRISTMAS! Our prayers from Lighthouse Network to you is for a year of growing closer to God, maturing in your Christian walk (not just knowledge), and further developing the mind of Christ.
Today is a day of great celebration, remembering the greatest gift given to us. Many went to church yesterday or will go today. We will also celebrate today with those we love, exchanging gifts as symbols of our love, and making more memories and adding another chapter of Christmas traditions. But, to be honest with you, part of me gets angry about Christmas Day.
You see, as a Christian especially, we are so blessed that Christmas is really everyday…all 365 days a year, Christ and God’s grace is abundantly given to us. Every day is Christmas! Satan has put out a lie that all the other days are not special, are just ordinary at best, and often, are even terrible days. Unfortunately, we fall into the trap of believing those lies. Celebrating Christmas one day a year, I believe, allows people to enjoy it just one day, then carve it out of their life as they put it back in the attic with the Christmas tree ornaments, lights, wreaths, wrapping paper, table cloth and placemats, until the next Dec 25.
Today, make a commitment to yourself and God to not put Christmas away in the attic of your heart…keep it in the kitchen of your heart… accessible daily with the rest of your staples for surviving and living. Each day will have new meaning, your lenses will be more God-centered, and the goal of the mind of Christ will be much closer. Dear Father God, Christmas is beautiful and I am overwhelmed with Your love, gift, and death for me. Actually for me, a sinner like me. It is still so unbelievable that the King of Kings, Lord of Lords would actually die for me. I regret that I put Christmas away in the attic sometimes instead of living out of and in that joy daily. Stepping Stones: Glorious Reunions
Transformational Tip
When I was a young father, my job required that I travel abroad. At times, I would have to be away for up to a whole week…away from my little girls. I recall the separation from my four young daughters as being almost unbearable. I also remember the “catch-my-breath” moments when I would see their beautiful little faces looking out the window as I pulled up the driveway returning home from those seemingly endless business trips. Each reunion was glorious...melting my heart with love, joy, and excitement. They didn’t forget me, they loved me, and they were wanting more of me.
I’m thinking, each time we turn toward God in prayer, after a time away from Him, that He feels the way I felt when reuniting with my children after time away from them. Glorious reunions. But the difference is… we are the one leaving our Father. He is always there, pursuing us with joyous anticipation and hopeful expectation of that glorious reunion.
In this world, finding and getting something so awesome usually takes a lot of work, effort, time, and/or resources. But this glorious reunion is so easy to be part of…God sent His son, Jesus, to open the door to this glorious reunion. We just need to claim it through faith in Christ as our Savior, and continue it through confession, prayer, and putting on the His armor for Godly living.
Today, examine your heart and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal what diverts you from reuniting with God on a more regular basis throughout the day. Reading Stepping Stones daily is a great start, but we need to have many glorious reunions everyday. our goal is to have one day that is a continuous glorious reunion with Hom all day long. Stepping Stones: The “I Deserve….” Trap

There are so many manifestations of our sinful nature. One that I have noticed in others (and in myself) lately is this false notion of “I deserve…..” I deserve the best deal, I deserve more credit, I deserve the lion’s share…I deserved the finest of everything. We are even encouraged by others. How many times has someone said to you “go ahead…you deserve it”? From the early days of childhood we see the impulses to focus on ourselves. The “My kingdom come, my will be done” mentality.
The I-deserve-it trap has many pitfalls. One such pitfall is it’s damaging effect on relationships and marriage; who works the hardest? who spends more? who’s not doing enough to serve the other? And all of a sudden anger begins to fester because we are not getting what we deserve. We often feel the person on the other side of the relationship is standing in the way of what I deserve…they become the enemy, or, at the very least, aren’t my teammate.
Today, notice when you aren’t feeling content…feel hurt, frustrated, angry, sad, or anxious. Most likely it’s because you got caught in the “I deserve…” trap. Put your finger on what you feel you deserve…then replace it with acknowledging the grace from God that you are even able to be alive and read this devotional. What makes you deserving of that, let alone anything more. Be aware that as soon as we begin to think we are entitled to more we are entering the land of selfishness… and this is a very slippery slope. I pray, Father, that by Your grace, I am empowered to serve instead of “deserve.” I pray in the name of the one You sent to forgive me, save me, heal me - Jesus Christ; and all God’s children said - AMEN!

Stepping Stones: It Really is Your Choice
Transformational Tip
So many of us tend to believe that our current situation determines the quality of our lives…determines our happiness. We feel happy when things go “our way”, and sad when things don’t turn out as we had hoped. Because that is an important part of our belief system…we pour so much time and energy fretting over and trying to control or change our current situation or our future. We rarely think about what really is the connection and correlation between our circumstances and our well-being.
We need to understand and remember that the distance we place between ourselves and God is what truly controls the quality of our lives…and our feelings. We have a choice. We can live as close to God as we choose. He does not set up any barriers between us and Him…nor does He take any barriers down that we erect. He resources us with Jesus, the Holy Spirit, confession, and many spiritual tools to reduce those barriers. But it is up to us to decide to use them. How closely we live to Him really is our choice. That’s how He created us. Free will.
Peace really comes from the inside, and is not based on the outside. If your peace is based on your external circumstances, all is vanity, you are like the animals. God always pursues us…being close to Him, using His resources, instruction, promises, and character, will bring us an understanding, contentment, and peace that will overwhelm us. It will also force people to ask you how you handle adversity so well.
Today, assess yourself. Do you have peace when circumstances go your way, but are unsettled, disrupted, overwhelmed, or frustrated when life doesn’t go your way. Put more energy into trusting God and enjoying His Holy presence. Do not let your well-being depend on the situation at hand. Instead, try connecting your joy to Him and you will find that it is possible to be content through Him in every situation. Stepping Stones: Pain Relief and Healing
Transformational Tip
I cut my finger the other day. Didn’t give it the care it needed at the time…just threw a bandage on it to stop the bleeding. Infection set in and the injury got my attention. I went to buy an antibiotic ointment to aid the healing and found a leading brand ointment that had an interesting claim; “Healing and pain relief.” The cut was creating some discomfort for me, so I choose the product that offered more than healing.
The Holy Scripture tells us that Christ’s mission was to come to forgive and to save…to provide for us with “eternity.” He came to deliver oh so much more than just our redemption. He brought us eternal freedom, fulfillment, peace and joy.
The prophet Isaiah tells us the Messiah will come to bind up and heal, to release and set free (while we are here on earth). Jesus himself referenced this passage as captured in Luke 4:17. Think about that; Christ came not only to forgive you, but to restore and release you. This is the central passage in the entire bible about Jesus. He fulfilled all the prophesies, testifying to the truth, dying for us to bring ultimate healing and shalom to our lives and His relationship with us.
Today, take Jesus Christ at his word…the healer of all the broken pieces within you and unite them into one whole and healed heart. Think what life would be like if you believed that promise. I pray in the name of the one You sent to forgive me, save me, heal me - Jesus Christ; and all God’s children said - AMEN!

Stepping Stones: Who’s Your Counselor?
Transformational Tip
We all have so many unanswered questions about ourselves; Am I really a good person? Am I truly lovable? Why do I do the things I do? Why do I feel the way I feel? While we struggle to answer these questions for and by ourselves, it’s difficult to get to the core answers without a true counselor.
The combination of our arrogance and pride—I don’t need any therapy, thank you very much—and the fact that it’s become a profession with a stigma attached—mental illness, Freud, and Prozac and all that—has kept most of us from realizing that we do need counseling. All of us. As Christians, thankfully, we have the best councilor living right inside us.
The Bible tells us Jesus sends us his Spirit as Counselor…that ought to make it clear. In fact, we apparently need quite a lot of counsel—the Spirit isn’t just stopping in to give us a tune-up; not even an annual checkup. He has come to stay and give us a complete makeover…from the inside out. Now, we just need to figure out how to “hear” His counsel and quit sabotaging His efforts in our life.
Today, confess your sins, then talk to God about a struggle issue in your life. Open His word…read the Christmas and Easter story…then listen for His counsel. If you have trouble following the counsel, or continue to sabotage His efforts, think of getting someone to help show you how to listen and follow His counsel. Stepping Stones: Eliminate Worry-Time
Transformational Tip
A book written about ten years ago titled the Knowing-Doing Gap. The book’s premise; in general we all know what we should and should not do, but there is a huge gap between knowing and actually doing. We shouldn’t smoke…but we do. We should overeat…but we do. We shouldn’t worry…but we do. At Lighthouse Network, we call that your Intellectual Creed vs your Behavioral Creed.
For many, to try not to worry is like trying not to think about something; the more we try, the more anxious we become. So we even begin to worry about worrying. Trying to fight this battle alone gets to be so counterproductive.
Perspective…how we view ourselves, God, and the circumstances He allows in our live…is the key to good decision-making. Will you have God’s perspective or your own. Big difference. Sometimes it is hard to have God’s perspective, but the more time you spend with Him, the more time you get to know Him and His perspective becomes much clearer to you. Stop focusing on worry and put your energy in communicating with God. This strategy will help you achieve freedom from all sorts of negative behavior, including worrying. The idea is simple; replacing hurtful, self-defeating tendencies with something wonderfully positive – communicating with your Creator and Savior.
Today, don’t just talk to God…listen to Him as well. He speaks to you through His Holy Word, His Holy Spirit, the circumstances He allows in your life, and through other believers. As you give yourself more and more to communicating with Him, you will find your worry-time evaporating and the knowing-doing gap closing. Your intellectual creed will become your behavioral creed. Stepping Stones: You Control the Switch
Transformational Tip
I’ve noticed…there are so many unhappy people I encounter every day. And they are all so quick to blame their unhappiness on things that are out of their control; the economy, the government, their circumstances…or other outside factors robbing them of joy and happiness. But there is a list of objectives and desires that are within our control: a close relationship with God, a clear purpose in life, a commitment to help someone in greater need than ourselves, and maybe, a deeper commitment to our faith.
These are all honorable desires and are all things we as individuals can do something about…without outside human help. No stimulus package or government program will assist here, and tough economic times cannot steal these ideals. These life goals are achieved as we allow God’s Word to rule in our hearts and as we receive the Spirit’s strength to build up the inner man resulting in true joy.
In our complicated world, it’s tempting to put our pursuit for what we desire into the hands of others—to expect an outside entity to fulfill our desires. While we sometimes need help and we cannot live in isolation, it’s not outside sources that provide true happiness…that must come from within, your decision. You control the switch…will you shine brightly or switch the light off.
Today, remember that blaming your unhappiness on things that are out of your control is an excuse. Change your lenses, change your life. Dear Father God, I confess that I have been guilty of having the “victim mentality.” I have been so quick to blame circumstances beyond my control for my unhappiness. I pray, Father, that You help turn my mind to those things that I do have control over. Help me, Father, to remember that You are the one and only true source of sustainable happiness. I pray in the name of the one source who gave me the freedom to control my happiness, Your greatest gift, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children said - AMEN!

Stepping Stones: Train to Use the Right Tools
Transformational Tip
My Dad was a carpenter…he did beautiful things with wood. When I would compliment his work, he always humbly said the same thing…“It’s easy when you have the right tools.” I was always amazed and what he created, how he could sculpt something wonderful and exquisite from a block of ordinary wood. Having the right tools is important, but he also was too humble to admit the need for training in how to most efficiently use the right tools.
Once you start believing that you need His help, you will begin receiving all the tools…all the equipment to handle whatever comes your way. His promises to be near you and to take care of you, exhortations that help you avoid sinful snares, the gift of forgiveness when you “miss the mark,” the Holy Spirit to live in you and empower you. He provides all the tools you need to do the job…but you have to make the effort to train and use what He provides.
Satan also provides tools…amazing how we become better at using Satan’s tools and not God’s. Why? Does material and physical gain mean that much to us than the emotional, relational, psychological, and spiritual gain that God promises? Just look at Tiger Woods…all the material gain a person could achieve, but floundering in misery, insecurity, and fear. What tools are you using? God’s tools lead to real life transformation…Satan’s lead to conformity to the world.
Today, reflect for a moment on all that is provided to you by Him through Christ, the Bible, and His Holy Spirit. Compare these to Satan’s tools. You make the call, which set will you choose to train in and use. Stepping Stones: Just Like the Wise Men
Transformational Tip
We all need a guiding light. A star of guidance to lead us in our lives. By keeping God as our guiding star we will know how to put one foot in front of the other on our daily path. To walk in the way of peace we must follow Him wholeheartedly, like the “Wise Men” did 2000 years ago.
If we drift slightly from following His lead, we’re on a slippery slope for disaster. We will still be able to see Him, just a bit, for a while…but as we drift, eventually we lose sight of Him altogether, and once again be lost in the darkness. We all have lived in darkness and know how that feels. Veering even a few degrees of course takes us far from Him. The most important thing at that point is to realize and accept that we have lost our way. If we are humble enough, we can call out to Him for help. He will hear our cry and come to our rescue…leading us back on the path of Peace to develop the Mind of Christ.
Today, like the Wise Men did on the eve of Christ’s birth, look for that star of guidance in your life provided by our true and living God...and be willing to following wherever He may lead you. He is the light from on high…the ultimate Lighthouse that illuminates your way. But also identify a false light, something in your life that is leading you astray. Commit to turning from it and let the true light led you. WITHIN REACH helps you identify and turn from those false stars we all get tricked by. Stepping Stones: Have Bold Expectations!
Transformational Tip
There was this quarry in the middle of a city park in the town where I grew up. There was a fence that separated the people from the water…along the fence, signs were clearly posted – “No Fishing”. Because there was no fishing the lake was full of fish…big fish. When we would walk up to that fence, the fish would come swarming toward us; a real temptation for me and my older brother Jamie, who spent long hours at that park. I must confess we did jump that fence on occasion and fish for a few minutes. We didn’t even have to bait the hook. The fish came expecting food…they certainly had bold expectations.
So, why did the fish come immediately flapping their fins? Because our mere presence set off a conditioned response in their tiny fish brains that told them we had something special to give them. Wow, what if we always had this awesome response to God and as He desires to give us good gifts—a response based on our past experience with Him that flows from a deep-seated knowledge of His character. Especially His love that gave us the greatest gift of all…Jesus…to die for us and buy our freedom from sin and eternal salvation.
Today, swim and swarm toward God with bold expectations. Expect great things from Him. Pray with bold expectancy; for prayer without expectation is unbelief in disguise. Click here to share with the Stepping Stones community your thoughts on having bold expectations.

For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. Or what man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!

Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Stepping Stones: Who Do You Fear?
Transformational Tip
Share your cookie…say nice things…let your friend go first…let’s not keep score to promote sportsmanship. The Golden Rule - Love your neighbor as yourself. We all learned, or were at least lectured, about the importance of being nice to others. Pleasing people can be quite rewarding…not pleasing people can bring a lot of downside. One key is, “what motivates me to please people?”
I just recently came to the realization of just how much of my life is controlled and hampered by fear of people. This condition has been so prevalent in my life that I failed to recognize it most of my life…I just accepted it as part of my daily existence. My fear does not come from thinking they will hurt me or do me harm, my fear comes from the possibility of displeasing them and therefore not getting what I need (or think I need) from them.
Today, stop and think about how much of your life is hampered by fear of people. Then try this two-pronged approach for dealing with this crippling fear. First, replace your fear of displeasing people with the dread of displeasing the Lord of your universe. Secondly, develop a deeper trust in God. Instead of trying to please people so they will give you what you want, trust in Him – the Supplier of all your needs. O God, The fear of displeasing people is so deeply engrained in my mind. I am too concerned about displeasing them or looking foolish in their eyes. I confess, Father, that I am a people pleaser, but I deeply desire to change this. Help me to worry more about displeasing You. Help me, Father, to trust You more…to trust that I will get everything I need from You…not other people. I pray in the name of the ultimate pleaser of the world, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children said - AMEN!

My fear does not come from thinking they will hurt me or do me harm, my fear comes from the possibility of displeasing them and therefore not getting what I need (or think I need) from them.
Today, stop and think about how much of your life is hampered by fear of people. Then try this two-pronged approach for dealing with this crippling fear. First, replace your fear of displeasing people with the dread of displeasing the Lord of your universe. Secondly, develop a deeper trust in God. Instead of trying to please people so they will give you what you want, trust in Him – the Supplier of all your needs. Prayer
O God, The fear of displeasing people is so deeply engrained in my mind. I am too concerned about displeasing them or looking foolish in their eyes. I confess, Father, that I am a people pleaser, but I deeply desire to change this. Help me to worry more about displeasing You. Help me, Father, to trust You more…to trust that I will get everything I need from You…not other people. I pray in the name of the ultimate pleaser of the world, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children said - AMEN!

Stepping Stones: Choose the Focus of Your Mind
Transformational Tip
You have the ability to choose the focus of your mind. Of course there are many thoughts that come and go spontaneously, but you can control your thinking more than you realize. Under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, Paul the apostle tells us; whatever is true…whatever is noble…whatever is right…to think about such things.
Because the world contains both good and evil, you can choose to think about praiseworthy things or terrible, upsetting things. There are times that you must deal with the brokenness around you, this is inevitable. However, there are times during the day when you are free to choose the focal point of your mind. This is the time to take charge of your thoughts. When your mind is idle it often moves to negative thoughts such as regretting something in your past or worrying about the future. These are the times to recall that Jesus was named Immanuel at birth which means “God with us.”
Today, train your mind…make an effort to turn your thoughts toward God in every activity in your mind…even if it is for just 3 seconds. See how often you can bring God into each subject or issue you think about. The more you do it, the easier it gets. Remembering “Who He Is” will brighten even your darkest times with Joy. Dear Father God, I am so thankful that You are “God with us” constantly and for all eternity. I want that knowledge alone to be sufficient to fill my days with joy and peace. However, Father, I confess that my mind so easily slips out of focus…and I forget about your ever-presence. When this happens, You slip even further from my awareness…and then worries and worldliness attack my mind. Help me, Lord, to train my mind to constantly turn to You. I want You to be my positive focus, but I need Your help. I pray in the name of my model for single-mindedness, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children said - AMEN!
The Truth
So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.”
Matthew 1:22-23
Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.

But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.

Stepping Stones: Take His Yoke
Transformational Tip
I always thought the idea of being “yoked” was one of those concepts that just didn’t fit in with my way of thinking…that it always seemed inconsistent with God’s message and the teachings of Jesus Christ. But when I read that passage today I had an entirely different perspective. The yoke can symbolize many concepts, especially Him taking some of my burden, but one application really struck me today.
I felt that He must have a purpose in this instruction and I am sure that He does not plan to use me in some mechanistic way. I see the yoke now as a vibrant kinship between me and my God as He lives in and through me. I see now that His yoke is not restrictive, harsh or pressing…rather it is comfortable, gracious and pleasant. He tells us that the yoke is necessary to learn from Him. I am believing more and more, that only He knows what is best for me.
Today, remember that only God knows what is best for you. Listen to and follow His simple instructions offered in the Holy Scripture. Be willing to take His Yoke and experience his inexpressible, glorious Joy. As you submit to this bond of love He will fill your with life and abundance. So identify one area where you are leaning on your instruction book and not His. Today, try His instead.

Dear Father God, I like to feel free. I delight in coming to You…but I’m not eager to be yoked. Help me, Father, to remember and believe that only You know what is best for me; even when it involves limitations and restrictions. I long to be filled with Your Life and Joy…so please show me how to take Your yoke on me. I pray in the name of my ultimate Yoke-bearer, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children said - AMEN!

Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.
