Transformational Tip
My mother had a couple of Christian themes that she tried to embed in the minds of us children. One of those themes was to trust God with our whole heart and minds. Not just to mouth the words, rather to live like we trusted Him completely. I put this to practical application one day when I was 6 years old. I was climbing the old plum tree in the back yard and decided to hang upside down off a branch like a possum. I could not get myself back up onto the branch…I was stuck. After yelling frantically for my mom, the often delivered message came to my mind; trust God with everything. So I closed my eyes and asked God to get me out of this tree. I immediately fell out of the tree into a soft pile of sand in our sandbox. I was so excited to tell my mom that trusting God really works. Mom always loved to retell that story.
Today, practice trusting in God with more and more areas of your life. Instead of fearing and running away from situations, embrace them with an eagerness to gain all the blessings God has hidden in those difficulties. Dear Father God,
I believe Father that You are sovereign over every aspect of my life…and that it is possible to trust You in all situations. Help me Lord to stop wasting so much energy regretting the way things are or thinking about what might have been. Stepping Stones: A Real Makeover
Transformational Tip
So much time and effort goes into touching up (or overhauling) our outward appearance. Hiding our defects. We are so concerned about our looks. It’s almost as if we believe the touch-ups hide our internal nicks, defects, and scars… frustration, hurts, emptiness, and our true feelings of inadequacies. Don’t get me wrong; being good stewards of our bodies is important. Unfortunately, I see a lot of people trying to fix up the outside, hopping that fixes, or at least hides the inside issues. Why? Because, most people know how to fix up their outside, but have trouble knowing how to work on and fix the deeper issues on the inside. Our external makeovers can fool most people, but as we know, God can see straight through that outer veneer and right into our very being. There is no place for pretense in your relationship with our Lord and God. A real external makeover really starts on the inside, then the growth will shine through and make the outside glow, and people will notice and wonder, “Wow, I want to be like that!”

Stepping Stones: Are You Afraid to Fall?
Transformational Tip
As a young boy I spent many afternoons at the local roller-skating rink. My father was a great skater. When he skated, everyone stopped to watch. I worked hard to try and get as good as my dad. Upon returning from the rink one day my dad asked me how many times I fell that day. I was proud to tell him that I didn’t fall once. He then told me that I must not have learned anything new that day; “If you are not falling…you are not learning.”
True dependence is not simply asking God to bless what you have decided to do. It means coming to him with an open mind and heart, inviting Him to plant His desires and will within you. The only way to achieve a victorious life is by living in deep dependence on Him. Stretching ourselves and depending on Him is scary at times, but also so freeing when we see His hand at work, guiding and helping us. For God to grow us, you need to reflect and evaluate what happened so the “falls” or mistakes can be learned from so He can show us new things and grow us.
We wrongly associate victory with success, by not falling and stumbling…by not making mistakes. It is only through problems and failure, weakness and neediness that we learn to rely on Him. Today, look at a recent failure or mistake and tell someone who knows you. Ask them what God might have been showing you through that experience. Dear Father,
I come to you with open hands and an open heart. I pray Lord that You will infuse within me a dream that appears to be far beyond my reach. I have faith, Father, that each failure will be followed by a spiritual growth spurt, nourished by my increased reliance on You. Stepping Stones: Watch Your Mouth
Transformational Tip
Our mother had little tolerance for the use of profanity in her home. She wouldn’t yell or punish us, she would simply say; “Whenever someone uses profanity, it only shows their ignorance.” But if we abused God’s name as profanity, Mom would come down on us like a ton of bricks. We learned at an early age that if we used this verbal assault on our Lord, the words were heard all the way to heaven. I am saddened how Our Father’s name is constantly abused in the world today, where people use it freely as a curse word. Let’s all begin to counter this world’s blasphemies by trustingly uttering “Jesus.” The incredible power of using His name to honor Him, bless us, and reorient us to His majesty and holiness is beyond our understanding.
Today, whenever you feel distant from God, whisper His Name in loving trust. This simple, one word prayer can restore your awareness of His closeness to you and remind you of His love for you. Stepping Stones: Time to Stand Up!
Transformational Tip
We live in a time when people are standing up for all sorts of causes. We have people standing up for the rights of animals. We have people standing up for the environment. We have people standing up for perverse sexual lifestyles. We have people standing up for everything imaginable, even willing to die for their cause. I love my wife and kids and would fight to the death if someone was attacking them. David knew what was worth standing up for as he spent much time praying to, learning from, and trusting in God. David couldn’t stand to hear Goliath blaspheme someone he loved so dearly, His true and living God. Without fear or hesitation, and with great confidence, David was ready to stand up and fight the mighty, giant warrior everybody, even Saul, feared. Why? Because David knew God stood up for him, and later his messiah, Jesus, would stand up for him.
Isn't it time that we, as Christians, stand up for what we believe? To David, standing up for God was a no-brainer. What about you?
Today, stand up, be heard and don’t be ashamed of the truth, which is found in Christ… no matter what the consequences! Be a Lighthouse, speak the truth excitedly and boldly thru your actions and attitudes. If it is a testy situation, speak calmly and in love, but don’t be afraid to stand up clearly for our Savior and His name. Help me see You clearly, and not be so deceived by fear of other’s opinions or consequences so I can stand up for You. Give me the strength and the words to stand up for You. Stepping Stones: You Have to Know the Author!
Transformational Tip
In high school, when I read Romeo and Juliet or Julius Caesar, I often thought I would understand and be impacted deeper if I really knew Shakespeare…his personality, nuances, life. When watching “Biography” on TV, I am more interested, intrigued, and impacted when I “know” or “intereacted” with the subject…like Gilligan, Bob Barker, Ronald Reagan…as opposed to subjects that really never touched my life. If you were to read my personal journal, your understanding and enjoyment of it would be dramatically impacted by whether you knew me personally or not. Well the bible, God’s journal is the same way. The bible is a great book, filled with great life tips, but to really maximize the treasure inside it, you really need to know and be in relationship with the author. Then it really comes alive and is more powerful than anything except the Trinity themselves. Get to know the Author, then He and His journal will make more sense and have more authority in your life.
Today, ask yourself “does the Bible make sense to me?“ “do I easily practice what it says?” If you aren’t confident in your answers, ask “how much time a day do I spend relating to and getting to know God?” Read a couple Psalms, or one of Paul’s letters to know God better. Dear Father God, I praise You as the Author of the big story. Thank you for making things so clear in Your word. I confess, I want to take shortcuts at times…not spend time getting to know You or be in Your great storybook, journal, instruction manual. Then I wonder, why I am frustrated, insecure, and lost at times. Thanks for Your Holy Spirit in me to help me digest Your Word and apply it to me life and help me get out of the way and then follow the Holy Spirit’s direction for my life. I pray in the name of the Author of my salvation, Jesus Christ, and all God’s people said, – AMEN!

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
Hebrews 4:12
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.
2 Timothy 3:16

Stepping Stones: Why We Search
Transformational Tip
When you are searching for your keys, it is because they are not in the right place…lost. When we are in Washington, DC and searching for the Washington Monument, the monument isn’t lost, we are lost. We search for the Truth not because it is lost, we search for the Truth because we are lost. We were designed by God to search and find Him. Our search is usually for comfort, peace, love, happiness, being valued…all things God can and wants to give us. Unfortunately, instead of one-stop shopping, going to God for everything, we search in many other places and things for the desires of our heart. We try to find relief at work, computer, food, relationships, kids, our grown-up toys, getting ahead, but we are looking in the wrong places.…we search because we are lost. God isn’t lost, He is in the same place all the time…you’ll find Him in His word, thru prayer, and orchestrating your circumstances to direct you back on track to Him. Where is your searching leading you? Let the word of God be submerged into your mind and spirit; “Seek and you will find” “I am the way, the truth and the life”

I pray Father for the Stepping Stones community that they too may focus their search toward the Truth…toward You Father. Stepping Stones: Don’t Look Down!
Transformational Tip
It’s so tempting, so easy…and at times even feels like harmless fun; looking down upon and judging others. I’ve been guilty of doing it myself, and I have also felt the pain of being looked down upon…being judged by others, and as I’m sure you know, there’s no fun in that. Looking down on others is different than the more caring act of noticing someone’s difficulties and wanting to help them. Looking down on others really exhibits a survival of the fittest mentality…taking from someone for my advancement. This is the opposite of God’s system, which is based on love. Love is about giving, looking out for others, helping people. Judging is about pushing down, taking something from somebody, and not consistent with God’s methods and plan for us.
Today, be mindful that we are called by God to be disciples, not judges. Be aware of looking down on others…for our Lord is the only one that could have looked down on you, but instead, loved you and gave His life. Dear Father,
I confess Lord that I have been guilty of judging others. I know I have fallen into this sinful pattern because it gives me the false perception that I am better than those I judge. Instead of judging others, help me be a lighthouse to them in their time of need. Help me minister Your word so that I may comfort and guide them. Also Father, help me forgive those who judge me…help me not give them authority over me with their condemnation. In the name of Jesus, and all God’s people said, – AMEN!

Stepping Stones: Be a “Whole” Believer
Transformational Tip
There are two sides to being a believer; one of light and one of darkness. As a believer myself, I spend most of my spiritual energy on the “light” side of things. The promise of salvation, the grace and mercy of our Father, the power of forgiveness, amongst other things. But to be a “Whole” believer we need to accept the dark side as well. We must believe that Satan is as real as Jesus. It’s an ugly, scary fact. I bristle at even having to write about him. However, we need to know and believe that Satan’s primary mission for being is to separate us from Christ. Be clear, each day, especially for believers and followers of Christ, we are embroiled in spiritual warfare. Satan not only wants your attention, he wants your soul, your family, your job, your relationships…he wants it all. His job is to create constant confusion and distraction in your mind. This confusion attacks every sphere…your brain chemistry, your emotions and personality, your relationships with others, and Satan’s primary goal, disrupting our relationship with God. God calls us to renew our mind, not destroy it.
Today, become a “Whole” believer by accepting and being aware that there is a never-ending war between God and Satan, and the trophy is your soul. Dear Father God, My focus is on You my Lord. I believe and accept Your promise. I thank You for sending Your Son Jesus so that our sins may be forgiven. But I believe there is this diabolical creature Satan. Your word tells us of his desire for death and destruction. I reject Satan and all his works. Help me, Father, to be aware minute by minute of this spiritual battle that ensues around me. Help me remember that Satan tries to push my fleshly buttons, trying to tempt me to believe his lies about You.… Thank You for a process to renew my mind, biologically, psychologically, socially, and spiritually by sending Jesus to destroy Satan and your instruction book, the Bible. I pray in the name of Your Son Jesus Christ, and all God’s people said, – AMEN!
The Truth
He who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil's work. No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God's seed remains in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God.

Stepping Stones: Why Aren't I in Heaven Now?
Transformational Tip
We live in a world filled with heartache, sin and despair. Even God’s people are finding the difficulties of life a daily struggle. But the truth is that God never intended the lives of His children to be anything but happy. Our misery is self-induced. In fact, God’s plan is that whatever our circumstances in this life may be, we can have perfect happiness, peace and stability in an unstable world. This is one way that we glorify God. He has provided everything we need to accomplish His plan. Just think, when He saved us from the death sentence of sin, (“for the wages of sin is death”) the ideal next step (in our plan) would have been to immediately transport us to heaven and bypass life on this earth. But that is not His plan. His plan is to “grow us” from babes in Christ to mature Christians, refined by the fiery trials of life and brought forth as pure gold, demonstrating to an unbelieving world that He is an all sufficient God.
Today, if you are weary and worn from the pressures of life today, and think God made a mistake keeping you here on Earth, read Psalm 23. Identify what you are afraid of and why…because that blocks you from enjoying His promised peace and comfort. Father, thank You for Your precious Word that stabilizes my soul and removes the doubts and fears that come from my difficulty applying my head knowledge to my everyday belief system. It is more precious than silver or gold, or anything that this weary world has to offer. You do not owe me a single thing Father, yet You faithfully keep blessing and keeping me through the storms of life. I can never begin to thank You enough for all You have done for me. Great is Thy faithfulness! The old hymn says it so beautifully:

Morning by morning new mercies I see.
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided,

Stepping Stones: Cool in the FIre
Transformational Tip
Today we will look at the suffering of three men, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, three young Hebrew men taken captive to Babylon by King Nebuchadnezzar. They are better known by their Babylonian names, Shadrack, Meshach and Abednigo. Early in their captivity King Nebuchadnezzar erected a 90’ high image made of gold (Dan. 3:1) and commanded ALL the people in the land to bow down and worship it. If they did not, the sentence was immediate death (v.6) in a burning, fiery furnace. These three men refused to obey. The king was furious (v.14&15) but gives them an opportunity to save themselves by bowing to and worshipping the image. He further asserts his human authority by insulting the ability of their God to rescue them from imminent death. The three answered the king in a most remarkable way; “O Nebuchadnezzar,…IF it be so, OUR God whom WE serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and He will deliver us out of THINE hand, o king, BUT IF NOT, (maybe He will or maybe He won’t!) Be it known unto thee, o king, that WE WILL NOT serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image…” (v.16-18). The furnace was heated more than usual, so hot in fact, that it consumed the men who threw them in. Though they had no guarantee of deliverance, God not only delivered them without even the smell of fire on their clothes, but the Lord Jesus Christ was with them in the midst of the furnace. They put their confidence in the true and living God. How about you?
Today, perhaps you find yourself in a fiery furnace of suffering that God is using more for those around you than for yourself. It may be that God has chosen you so that He can reveal Himself and His divine purposes to others. If that is your case, remember James’ admonition to “count it all joy…” Trust God’s love for you and the role He has designed for you in His kingdom. Father, increase my faith that I may be that vessel that is useful to you, and glorifies the Lord Jesus Christ, and all God’s people said, - AMEN!

Stepping Stones: The Antidote for Suffering
Transformational Tip
I’ve been thinking about suffering. At some point in our lives we will all be affected by it whether it is a friend, loved one, or ourselves. I’m sure that you are all familiar with the usual response; “Why does God allow us to suffer?” There are many reasons. Sometimes it is God’s discipline. It is the only way He may be able to get our attention. When we are not living for Him, as we should, He will take the necessary steps as a loving father would, to provide the circumstances to bring us back to Him. Sometimes personal suffering is not for us, but designed for the benefit of those around us. Sometimes suffering is simply due to the fact that we live in a world filled with heartache and sin. But you need to know that whatever the reason for your suffering, God has not, nor will ever abandon you. He is completely able to deliver you. But what He chooses to do is for our best and for His purposes.
Today, perhaps you find yourself in the midst of suffering today. It can be a deep, dark, valley of heartache and despair. All He requires from you is faith and obedience. The old hymn says it best: Trust and obey, for there’s no other way, To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey. Try trusting and obeying and see what God does. Stepping Stones: A Gold Mine of Peace
Transformational Tip
When I watch TV commercials or shows, so many times the characters are pursuing or selling peace. If we are honest with ourselves, we are all unsettled inside. Our daily pursuits…whether going to work, paying the bills, vacuuming the floor, going to school, yelling at our kids, retracting from a conflict, trying to be perfect, saving for the future, eating when we are frustrated, drinking alcohol or caffeine, pornography, working those extra few hours, I could go on a long time… are all efforts to avoid or soothe discomfort. We think they bring peace. I am not saying some of the things I listed aren’t good to do, but you will never find lasting peace in the world around you. You will not find it by acquiring “stuff”, more friends, in your kids, or a new spouse. You won’t find it in more sex, success, or a better house. The external world is always in flux…under the curse of death and decay. But as a Christian, there is a gold mine of peace within you, just waiting to be tapped. So get out of the Holy Spirit’s way, and access the peace only He can bring as you put on the Armor.
Today, take notice of your thoughts and decisions that are inconsistent with the Bible and God. These will block your ability to be humble and aware to the Holy Spirit’s direction and gift of unbelievable peace. Begin living from your true center in Christ. He lives in the deepest depths of you…of your being, in an intimate union with your spirit. Christ in you, the hope of glory. I pray that You help me stop my external and begin my internal search for peace. For so many years now I have misunderstood what true peace really feels like. Help me Lord to tap into that gold mine of peace which you have planted deeply inside me. I know Father that ever since the resurrection your watchword has been “Peace be with you” to those who yearn for You. I’m sitting here quietly Lord; letting Your presence and peace enfold me. I know Your son died a criminal’s death to provide this radiant peace. Thank You Father. I pray in the name of the Prince of Peace, Jesus Christ, and all God’s people said, – AMEN!

Stepping Stones: "Get Out of Hell Free" Card
Transformational Tip
Today, I am still thinking about “back-to-school.” Yesterday we purchased the “necessary supplies.” Today, my daughter will take Cassie for her “back-to-school” wardrobe, which I’m sure will fill several shopping bags. My own back to school wardrobe consisted of 3 dresses, 2 skirts (girls did not wear pants back then), 2 blouses, 2 pair of shoes,(one pair was for Sunday) 1 sweater and 1 coat. Education comes with a very high price these days, and the higher the education, the higher the price. In fact, everywhere we look we are confronted with the high cost of living whether it is school, housing, taxes, food and clothing, or the national debt itself! But then I am reminded of that which is FREE! That which costs me nothing, in fact that which no amount of money, silver or gold can buy. It is the greatest gift I have ever been, or will ever be given. It has pardoned and cleansed me from all my sin, guilt and shame, and has assured me of eternal life in Heaven. What a precious gift is this salvation of my soul! And although it is free to me, it cost my Heavenly Father a very high price; for He had to watch His only Son die on Calvary’s cross for the sins of the world. It cost Jesus, the Son, separation from the Father and Holy Spirit for the first time in all eternity, a torture He considered more excruciating than His physical suffering and death. Imagine that!!! Every sin ever committed in the human race, past, present AND future, bombarding His soul to the separation, for the first time in all eternity, from the Godhead, whose holiness prevented Them from looking upon sin! What a price to pay!

Oh Father, You paid much too high a price for me! I am not worth it! I am overwhelmed that You love me so much that You do not consider the price to high. I can never begin to thank You enough, or pay You back for what You have done for me. The old song says it so much better than I can:
Could we with ink the ocean fill, or were the skies of parchment made,
Were every stalk on earth a quill, or every man a scribe by trade,
To write the love of God above would drain the ocean dry,
Nor could the scroll contain the whole, though stretched from sky to sky.
O Love of God, How rich and pure, how measureless and strong,
It shall forever more endure the saints and angels song.

He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him: He was despised and we esteemed him not. Stepping Stones: The Ultimate GPS

Today, my granddaughter and I went shopping for her “back-to-school” supplies. I was amazed at the number of items she was required to have from a list given to her at “back-to-school” night. It suggested that she couldn’t effectively function without them. When we arrived at Walmart I was even more amazed at the variety of items there were to choose from. I had no idea there were so many different kinds of pencils alone, not to mention pens, markers, colored markers, and on and on-----and on! I thought back to my own school days. On the first day back to school, we were given one #2 pencil (ball point pens weren’t invented yet) and a thick, 6x8” yellow tablet with blue lines on each page. The first day of each month we were given new ones. If we ran out before the month’s end, we borrowed a sheet from a classmate. The interesting thing about the tablet was that on the cardboard cover there was a detailed map of the state of Pennsylvania. I saw that map every school day from 1stto 8th grade, and though I have ventured far and long from my home state, I can still remember most of its 67 counties, county seats, cities, rivers etc.
I am reminded of another map, given to me by my Heavenly Father. This map has guided me through the paths of life; from the lush green valleys, to the high rugged mountaintops of fear, beside the deep quiet still waters, to the rippling streams abounding with joy, to ocean depths of sorrow, and through rolling hills of despair. This map has never failed me. It has sufficiently guided me through every circumstance of life, and will continue to guide me to my journey’s end. It has kept every promise it has made. How could it not? Its Author is Divine, the sovereign Creator of all that exists!
Today, when you feel a lost or uncertain, reflect on God’s promises and direction.

Stepping Stones: Imperfectly Yearning For Perfection

Writing these devotionals is so enjoyable, enriching, such a blessing, and has really pushed me to dig into God’s word regularly. The down side, I want to say so much about each tip, in a couple paragraphs, so it’s not just a great feel-good message, but really practically equips you to Iive the life God wants for you that very day. Well, I am a perfectionist, and Satan uses that character flaw to try and suck the joy and excitement out of the blessing of being used by God to impact others. I’ve already written this one a couple times, wanting to be precise, impactful, catchy, brief, and practical. Why? Unfortunately at times, it’s more about my issues, and not as much about seeking and serving God well. I really have to be intentional to not fall in that trap. It’s important to remember that we live in a fallen world; a world that is so far from normal because it is tainted by sin. So much failure and frustration result from our seeking perfection in this life.
Today, remember that your yearning for perfection is not a bad thing in and of itself. Know that God placed that yearning in our hearts, so we would search for Him and not for it being about ourselves.

Dear Father God,
I know Father that my heart and soul contains many ill effects of the fall. As a result of this I often try and achieve perfection apart from You. This sets me down a path of frustration, insecurity, inadequacy, and failure. I sadly admit Father that this wrong path also included some form of idolatry. I want to return to You Lord…to the path that leads me to You. I will do this Lord, by seeking You first and foremost. As I seek You, Father, I know You will set my feet on the right Stepping Stone…that you will give me a firm place to stand and the guidance to take the right next step. Help my search for perfection, point me to You. I pray in Jesus’ perfect name, and all God’s people said, – AMEN!
The Truth
He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.
He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear
and put their trust in the LORD.
Psalm 40:2-3
that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead. Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead,

Stepping Stones: Missed the Mark
Transformational Tip
About three years ago I lost my brother Allen to cancer. Long before his illness Allen worked daily to achieve the mind of Christ. Directly following his diagnosis a massive prayer effort developed. A daily prayer with relevant scripture was sent via email to thousands…this internet prayer movement was the forerunner to the current Stepping Stones Daily devotional.
When a loved one falls gravely ill, it’s a natural response to pray for their healing…at times I almost demanded his healing from God, citing scripture about Jesus the healer…about ask and you shall receive. For the entire 22 months he battled this awful disease, Allen and his family believed he would be healed. We were pounding prayers to heaven requesting Allen’s healing.
I know we missed the mark with our prayers for Allen.
How presumptuous we were. We actually believed we could change God’s mind/plan for Allen. I believe now, based on my learning, growth, and the perspective of other Christians, we should have been praying to align ourselves with the will of God. To pray for God’s wisdom and peace for Allen and his family…and for ourselves. To pray that we lessen our grip on Allen and strengthen our grip on our Lord…to release Allen into God’s care and keeping.
While Allen agonized over leaving his wife and 5 children here on earth, in the end Allen was excited about meeting his Lord and God…if not ready, he certainly was as prepared as anyone could be to meet his Father, the Creator.
The prayer movement took on a life of it’s own. Bringing prayer and the Word of God to so many who had never prayed, truly changed lives. People actually came to accept Christ as a result of the daily prayers. Allen would love to read the responses that came in from the prayer group. Allen said before he died; “If somehow my illness delivers even one soul to God…it’s all worth it. And it was. Dear Father God,
I pray today for all the sick and injured loved ones and friends of this Stepping Stones prayer community. I pray that you infuse the sick with Your Holy Spirit to give them hope and strength. I pray Father that they seek to understand and align their thoughts and prayers with Your Will and Your timing…for Your timing is perfect Father. I pray that You will reveal to those suffering, as well as their caregivers, the meaning and purpose of these trials. I pray Father that You guide the minds and hands of all the medical professionals so that they do Your work as they apply their skills to the sick and injured. Help those who are terminally ill to understand that Your healing for them may in fact be delivered on the other side of this temporal life. Help them and all of us believe in You so that we will see Your glory. I pray this in the name of our healing savior Jesus Christ, and all God’s people said, – AMEN!

Stepping Stones: God’s Love Comes From Everywhere

I know, today’s title sounds like a Sunday school cliché. But I want to share a childhood memory that will hopefully bring it new meaning…and hope.
I’m one of 14 children, all from the same mother and father. Our mother had the deepest of Christ-based faith. Being one of the oldest, I had the opportunity, no, the blessing to witness my mother living out her faith through so many of her life’s storms. She was always sure to point out the receiving of grace and God’s love. She would tell her children often; “God’s love comes from everywhere.”
I was 8 years old and already had 7 siblings. My father was in the hospital due to a chronic heart condition. There had been no money coming into the household for a month or longer. I don’t know how mom provided for us. No food stamps or welfare. Our credit had run out at the small town grocery store. People brought food, but not often. On this particular evening it was dinner time and I knew there was no food in the house – nothing. I was hungry, but more concerned for my younger brothers and sisters. I went to my mom and let her know (as if she didn’t already know) that we had no food for dinner. “What are you going to do?” I asked. I saw the sadness and nervousness in her eyes. But with head up and shoulders back she said with confidence; “I don’t know right now, but I know God will provide for us.” I believed her.
A few minutes later there was a knock on our door. When I answered no one was there…but they had left a bushel basket of food – ham, bread, fruit, potatoes…it was overflowing. On top was an envelope with the words; “God’s love comes from everywhere.” Inside the envelope was $500 cash. Without Dad’s illness, I would never have got this lesson. Dear Father God,
I thank You for Your constant love and grace. I thank You for allowing me to see You at work throughout my mother’s life. Help me remember that when I am at my weakest, I am at my strongest, through Your power. As my mother was, I too want to be available to help You display Your power and glory to others. I know that my weakness is the ideal stage for the exhibition of Your Power. In Jesus’ perfect humble and powerful name, and all God’s people said, -AMEN!
The Truth
But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me.

Stepping Stones: Everything Into a Pattern of Good
Transformational Tip
I love mysteries, especially movies…they are like an intriguing treasure hunt. Lots of seemingly unrelated facts that point to a couple of potential false treasures. Then the last couple of clues reveal the culmination of what the real path and pattern truly is. Everything makes perfect sense now and I kick myself for feeling frustrated, lost, and hopeless when I was in the middle of the hunt. Sometimes, the map of our lives seem very confusing…we seem way off track from the road to success and fulfillment. But God’s word tells us that He will fit everything into a pattern of good for those who love him…including even those things in your life you wish were different.
Today, start believing that where you are at this point in time is exactly where God knew you would be and He has a great treasure hunt for you. Refuse to worry about the future and you will find all the resources you need for what comes next. Take the hunt one step at a time and enjoy the journey. Remember, Your life will make sense soon so get excited and obey and He will soon reveal the goal and His purpose to you. I can’t imagine how You can take this mess I have created and weave it all into a pattern of good. My current situation seems like a huge mistake to me. I pray Lord that you help me accept my circumstances as Your will. I stand ready Lord to develop eyes that see Your handiwork as You weave these patches of my life into an awesome tapestry. Thanks for caring for and about me as I try to understand your amazing plan to grow me more than I could even know or want for myself. I believe Father that nothing is impossible with You. I pray in the name of Your Son, the greatest treasure, Jesus, and all God’s people said – AMEN!

I love mysteries, especially movies…they are like an intriguing treasure hunt. Lots of seemingly unrelated facts that point to a couple of potential false treasures. Then the last couple of clues reveal the culmination of what the real path and pattern truly is. Everything makes perfect sense now and I kick myself for feeling frustrated, lost, and hopeless when I was in the middle of the hunt. Sometimes, the map of our lives seem very confusing…we seem way off track from the road to success and fulfillment. But God’s word tells us that He will fit everything into a pattern of good for those who love him…including even those things in your life you wish were different.
Today, start believing that where you are at this point in time is exactly where God knew you would be and He has a great treasure hunt for you. Refuse to worry about the future and you will find all the resources you need for what comes next. Take the hunt one step at a time and enjoy the journey. Remember, Your life will make sense soon so get excited and obey and He will soon reveal the goal and His purpose to you. Stepping Stones: Would You Be Left Behind?

9-11-2001. A date our generation will always remember. As a psychiatrist, unique ripples came into my office over those next couple of weeks. Some people were severely shaken. You see, the end of days of Earthly time begins with the Rapture, and is marked by all Christians on Earth being taken up to heaven. Common occurrences of the Rapture, when depicted in movies and books, include planes, trains, and automobiles crashing because the Christian pilots, conductors, and drivers are instantly taken to heaven. A number of Christians, when hearing the news flashes of 4 planes crashing, called me in a terrible state of anxiety and fear. They believed the Rapture occurred and they were left behind...left behind would mean they weren’t a Christian. What a terrible feeling and distressed state of mind it is to not know who you belong to and what happens to you in the end.
Today, think of someone you know who might not be sure if they would be left behind. Share with them the Good news and bring them the assured hope of eternity with their Creator and Heavenly Father.

Dear Father God,
You are so great and beyond my wildest comprehension. I am still amazed and reduced to tears when I think the King of all kings would actually die for me. Thank You for wanting to have me with You for all of eternity…and then doing all the work for me. Thank You for Your assurances of my eternal salvation and help me live with that state of mind every minute, so it is clear to others what Your good news is. In Jesus’ assuring death and triumphant resurrection, and all God’s people said- AMEN!

The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost. But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life. To the King of ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.
