Stepping Stones: Everything Into a Pattern of Good

Transformational Tip
I love mysteries, especially movies…they are like an intriguing treasure hunt. Lots of seemingly unrelated facts that point to a couple of potential false treasures. Then the last couple of clues reveal the culmination of what the real path and pattern truly is. Everything makes perfect sense now and I kick myself for feeling frustrated, lost, and hopeless when I was in the middle of the hunt. Sometimes, the map of our lives seem very confusing…we seem way off track from the road to success and fulfillment. But God’s word tells us that He will fit everything into a pattern of good for those who love him…including even those things in your life you wish were different.
Today, start believing that where you are at this point in time is exactly where God knew you would be and He has a great treasure hunt for you. Refuse to worry about the future and you will find all the resources you need for what comes next. Take the hunt one step at a time and enjoy the journey. Remember, Your life will make sense soon so get excited and obey and He will soon reveal the goal and His purpose to you. Dear Father God,
I can’t imagine how You can take this mess I have created and weave it all into a pattern of good. My current situation seems like a huge mistake to me. I pray Lord that you help me accept my circumstances as Your will. I stand ready Lord to develop eyes that see Your handiwork as You weave these patches of my life into an awesome tapestry. Thanks for caring for and about me as I try to understand your amazing plan to grow me more than I could even know or want for myself. I believe Father that nothing is impossible with You. Stepping Stones: Would You Be Left Behind?

Transformational Tip
9-11-2001. A date our generation will always remember. As a psychiatrist, unique ripples came into my office over those next couple of weeks. Some people were severely shaken. You see, the end of days of Earthly time begins with the Rapture, and is marked by all Christians on Earth being taken up to heaven. Common occurrences of the Rapture, when depicted in movies and books, include planes, trains, and automobiles crashing because the Christian pilots, conductors, and drivers are instantly taken to heaven. A number of Christians, when hearing the news flashes of 4 planes crashing, called me in a terrible state of anxiety and fear. They believed the Rapture occurred and they were left behind...left behind would mean they weren’t a Christian. What a terrible feeling and distressed state of mind it is to not know who you belong to and what happens to you in the end.
Today, think of someone you know who might not be sure if they would be left behind. Share with them the Good news and bring them the assured hope of eternity with their Creator and Heavenly Father.

Prayer
Dear Father God,
You are so great and beyond my wildest comprehension. I am still amazed and reduced to tears when I think the King of all kings would actually die for me. Thank You for wanting to have me with You for all of eternity…and then doing all the work for me. Thank You for Your assurances of my eternal salvation and help me live with that state of mind every minute, so it is clear to others what Your good news is. Stepping Stones: Glorious Adventure

Transformational Tip
An adventure is defined as an exciting, extraordinary event. The greatest adventure possible is knowing God superabundantly…by discovering how wide, and long and high His love is for you. The power of God’s vast love for you can be overwhelming – maybe that’s why so many people choose to limit their knowledge of Him…keeping Him at a safe distance. So many of us settle for mediocrity simple because it feels comfortable, safe. Those settling for mediocrity are destined to battle fear – for only His love is strong enough to break the hold that fear has on you. A predictable lifestyle may feel safer, but that safety can shield you from what you need most – God’s love.
The next time an unexpected event disrupts your routine, rejoice. This is exactly what you need to wake you up and point you toward Him. Dear Father God,
I long for the glorious adventure that a life abandoned to You can create. But I continue to grasp onto my old ways, my safe life. Stepping Stones: Use Your Safety Net?

Transformational Tip
In psychiatry residency, I was in the ER, and hospital security called. A guy was in our parking garage and threatening to jump off the 4th level. I ran over, got the info security gathered, then started talking to the depressed man. I worked my way up the garage toward him…he stopped my pursuit with serious threats to jump. I turned to the chief and asked, “When is the big net or pad going to get here, ‘cause I’m not to sure how long he’ll last?” The chief answered, “those nets are just in the movies, there is no safety net.” We are human…and with our humanness come ups and downs. However, God’s promises, love, and presence limits just how far we can go down….protecting you from falling into despair. He is your safety net, but you need to leap in His arms, not away from Him.
Today, keep reminding yourself of these four words; “I am with you.” These words are your safety net. As soon as you realize He is with you and is strong enough to catch you…everything changes. Prayer
Dear Father God,
I feel like I am in a free fall. I have fallen into despair. The people and things I have counted on have all let me down. I have put too much stock in them and not enough in You. Help me Father to remember today and always that You are with me…that I do have a safety net…that I do have a way out of despair and depression. Help me Father to not grasp for idols as my safety nets, for I know they only accelerate my fall. Guide me Father with Your council and take me into Your Glory. Stepping Stones: God Sings Your Tune!

Transformational Tip
What do you sing about? Who do you sing about? Who would sing about you? You can bet that strong, good, positive feelings are involved if someone is rejoicing with song over you. I am not a singer, but the people I happily sing about are Jesus, the Steelers, my children, and certainly my wife. When God sees YOU, and you look back at Him, you will not see any condemnation in His eyes – only love and delight. You see, living in the grace of God, devoting time to praising Him, learning through God’s word, and communicating with Him is meant to be peaceful, easy, not stressful. There is no need for you to “work” for God’s love. He gives it abundantly and freely. Let today’s scripture reading penetrate your mind, body and spirit.
Today, close your eyes and imagine God singing for you. What a beautiful image. Feel His face shining radiantly on you…bringing you peace and rest. As one of His children, You can relax because you don’t have to work any more for His favor. Dear Father God,
I feel at times as if I have been climbing up hill my entire life. I’m tired, lonely and scared. I know God that you have designed me to live in union with you. Help me Father find fulfillment and peace by living close to You. Stepping Stones: Imagine World Without Anxiety

Transformational Tip
As an athlete, nervousness/anxiety about a future opponent…or while in a game, anxiety or fear in tense situations about the outcome…were common. Then my coach calms me, telling me everything will work out if I follow his strategy. He’s been there before, knows my opponent, knows what they will do, knows what me and our team can do, cares about me and is invested in my performance, and has prepared us specifically to face this opponent. Anxiety, worry and apprehension result from envisioning future events without God, our perfect coach. We might acknowledge He is our coach, but if we’re anxious, we aren’t really believing and following His coaching. He knows us, our opponent-Satan and Satan’s strategies, knows what the future holds, and loves us so much that He gave His son to secure our ultimate future. In any situation, if you turn your thoughts toward God as the perfect coach, trust His instructions, peace will squelch anxiety, you will think much more positively.
Today, when thinking about the future, anxieties sprout up like mushrooms. And the moment you begin to become anxious, remember the promise of God’s continual presence as your perfect coach. Make your thoughts a dialog with Him, listening to Him and His instruction, then adjust your view of your future accordingly to bring hope and assurance. Dear Father God,
I come to You my Lord with a thankful heart. I thank You for the holy scripture which gives me hope and guidance. I confess Father that I spent too much time worrying about the future. Help me Lord to place you in any future scenarios that enter my mind. It is facing the future without You and Your perfect coaching that creates anxiety within me. I pray Father that You will also lead me to others who suffer daily with anxiety and fear. Use me Lord to remind those in need of Your continual presence for those who believe. Stepping Stones: Savings...With Real Interest

Transformational Tip
When my kids are involved in plays, recitals, or sports, I am always amazed at how well these youngsters perform out there in front of the big crowd…with all the pressure…and mostly on their own. How is this possible? They are instructed in the fundamentals then practice them over and over...in safe, nonthreatening situations…till they are second nature. Then, after all those investments…of time, effort, trust in the coach, self-discipline, delayed gratification, dealing with mistakes, perserverance…the big night comes with pressure, potential adversity, judgement, and a lot on the line. The more deposits that were made, the bigger the reward…success, with interest. In these changing times it appears there is no safe place to put savings …that also pays interest.
Practice trusting in Your Lord during the quiet days. In the mundane, everyday situations, see God at work, trust in His character and promises, and communicate with Him regularly. Then when the storms come (and they will) your trust-balance will be sufficient to see you through. You will shine brightly, like in a play. You will also go to Him more easily in time of need, because you’ve been regularly practicing.

Today, try making a deposit in His treasury. Every time you affirm your trust in Him is like putting a coin into His treasury. In doing so you build up equity. He will keep safely in His heart all investments in Him…with interest compounded continuously. The more you trust in God, the more He will enable you to do so, and the easier it will be to trust Him during the storms. Dear Father God,
I know that the only safe investment is in You. I have tried saving money for security but have lost it all. Help me Father turn to trusting You. Stepping Stones: Caught By Suprise

Transformational Tip
The other day I was caught by surprise. I was shopping at my favorite butcher shop when the butcher asked: “could I ask you a personal question?” I have always exchanges pleasantries with this guy, but now he had a serious question. I said “sure.” He asked; “Where do you get your source of happiness…you are always smiling.”
I knew exactly where I get my source of happiness and joy, but I was caught off guard. So I gave him a lame answer; “Happiness is a choice…I choose to be happy.” I could tell he was disappointed in my answer.
A few days following that encounter I was reading 1 Peter and came across 3:15 where we are instructed to always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you. I went back to the butcher the next day and told him that I didn’t give him the quality response that his question deserved. I told him in front of listening customers that my happiness and joy comes from living within the hope and promise of salvation…the salvation made possible by Jesus Christ. I told him I was a struggling Christian, and then I asked him about his relationship with God.
It’s rare for someone to ask such a direct question of us, but when they do, scripture tells us to be ready.
Today, think how you might respond when someone asks you the reason for the hope within you. Can you articulate to yourself the impact your faith and God’s actions have in your daily, moment-to-moment living. This is what we need to live out and then tell others about. Dear Father,
I come to you with a thankful heart. I recognize Your Son Jesus Christ as my Lord and I trust Him for the strength to lead a God-pleasing life. Stepping Stones: What Do You Feed On?

Transformational Tip
I know that gnawing feeling in the pit of your stomach that keeps you awake at night. It’s all about fear and doubt. I know what it feels like to have creditors begin to surround you like wolves around wounded prey and there seems no way out. But there is always a way out. Just because you don’t know it, doesn’t mean there isn’t one. I believe the best way to position yourself to see the way out, is to choose to feed on His faithfulness. When you’re feeding on His faithfulness, it’s hard to feed on doubt, fear and unbelief too.
Today, stop from giving any more time to anxiety, fear and doubt. Recall a problem in the recent past, that in the moment of the acute crisis, you saw no solution and there was no help on the horizon. Then, a little time later, an answer, solutions, help, came. We all have situations that in retrospect, we see how amazing that situation worked out. It is important to identify and recall those times as they are examples of God’s faithfulness and sovereignty and our finiteness. You know how you were told while you were growing up to starve a fever and feed a cold, well it’s time to starve your unbelief and feed on His faithfulness. Dear Father God,
I thank You Father for Your Word which gives me hope, peace and joy. I have been feeding on all the wrong stuff. I have been feeding on negativity, worry…doom and gloom. My mind spins out of control…especially when I try to sleep. Help me my Lord to feed on Your faithfulness. Help me build myself up on Your most holy faith Lord. Help me practice the patience You are building in me through Your Holy Spirit to wait for Your timing and not demand mine. Stepping Stones: Eggs In the Wrong Basket

Transformational Tip
We are taught lessons beginning at an early age. Who we should be. How we should act. We learn these lessons first from our parents…and then from the world…society. Our parents taught us what they thought was right; but as adults we now have the ability (and obligation) to rethink and relearn as we strive to achieve the “mind of Christ.”
One of the “lessons” I was taught from a very young age - to become self sufficient… to not need anyone. To rely on no one. Accomplish and do things for myself, from taking my first step, feeding myself, doing my own homework, driving to baseball practice myself, etc. The intent was good, the lesson was flawed. While self-sufficiency is acclaimed and valued in the world, Reliance on Your Lord and God is the only way to produce abundant living here on earth and enter into His Kingdom.
Today, Exercise those faith muscles…identify an area of your life where you put your confidence and reliance in yourself…and leave God out until it’s an emergency. Let God in by praying about it then listening to God’s input (through others or circumstances). Don’t put your eggs in the wrong basket. Click here and tell us about it. We want to hear!

Prayer
Dear Father God,
I know that You designed me to be totally reliant on You. I know You have created me to be dependent on You. From the very beginning of creation people have strived wrongly to be totally independent, they have resisted relying on You. Even Adam and Eve’s first sin is evidence that they decided to live independently. I have turned to You Lord and are striving to be dependent on You during my life’s storms. I pray now that You help me turn to You, to rely on You continually. In the good times and the bad. I know that my renewed awareness of my neediness for You is a blessing, not a weakness. Teach me Father to depend on You more and more.

Stepping Stones: If Only I Were...

Transformational Tip
So much energy goes into worrying about, and trying to improve, how we look…our outward appearance. For many, this obsession with looks starts at a young age. It’s clear, for many people, they believe their looks define who they are. Nothing could be further from the truth. Remember back to high school…some of the most physically beautiful people were struggling deeply inside. I’ve missed out on so many potentially great friendships just because I used external appearance as a screening criteria before I would decide whether to get to know someone.
God does not look at our outward appearance; rather He looks at our heart. What is important to Him is also what should be important to us. Now, sometimes our external appearance, those certain aspects that are under our control, are a reflection of some issues going on in our heart. But the focus still needs to be on healing our heart issue…not the external appearance. Truly addressing your heart issues will positively affect the superficial issues that you have control of.
Today, try focusing on the condition of your heart. Stop obsessing about your face, weight, shape or clothes. Also, instead of judging people by their appearance, try seeing their heart…who they really are. You’ll be amazed at the depth of friendship when you look deeper. Prayer
Dear Father God,
I confess that I have been overly concerned about my physical appearance. I am guilty of coveting the physical beauty of others. Help me remember Father that it is my heart that You see. Help me focus on keeping a healthy body, mind and spirit. I turn to You my Lord for all my needs. Help me to resist the desire to look good and blend in with…or even compete with this world. I ask You Father to help me to start looking into the hearts of those around me, to not focus on their clothes and bodies. Help me compliment their kindness instead of their appearance.
I pray in the name of my perfect savior, Jesus Chris, and all God’s children said- AMEN!

Stepping Stones: Trials Create Temptation

Transformational Tip
Notice in James 1:2 that he says “whenever you face trials” not If you face trials. It’s something we don’t like to face into or admit…that suffering will come. It has been my experience that with pain and suffering come great opportunities for growth. But pain and suffering also brings with it powerful temptation. Temptation to seek an escape, temptation to self medicate with sinful practices and addictions such as sex, overeating, drugs, gambling, people-pleasing, etc. It is within our human nature to try and avoid or mask the pain of trials. In fact, all our dysfunctional behaviors develop to end, minimize, or avoid present or anticipated suffering.
The Bible is THE book (and I have read many psychiatry books) about suffering. From the fall of man, Job and all the biographies, our spiritual separation from God, to Jesus’ extreme suffering, the Bible tells us how God is with us, provides a peace and comfort, and sees us through the suffering.
Today, think of trials as opportunities to demonstrate your trust in God…even thanking Him for them…this is one of the highest forms of praise. When suffering strikes (and you know it will) remember that Your Lord and God is supreme and that he can bring good out of every circumstance in your life. Do not try to run and hide from the pain…do not try and mask it. Let your suffering gain meaning and draw you closer to God. Know that Joy can emerge from what feels like the ashes of adversity…it will emerge through your trust and thankfulness to God. Prayer
Dear Father God,
Today I feel as if I cannot endure one more trial. I feel weak and beaten down. I’m tired of this pain and I need relief. I confess Father that I have turned to unhealthy and sinful ways to try and escape this pain…but it has only made things worse. I keep digging this hole deeper and deeper. I pray Father that You help me stop digging deeper and help me climb up out of this hole.
I pray Lord that You help me get closer to achieving the mind of Christ. Help me bear my adversity bravely and directly…and help me have a thankful heart even in the darkest hours. I pray Father that you use me to help minister Your Word and love to those within my path that are in the midst of a life’s storm. Help me guide them away from temptation and toward You…for You are the ultimate Lighthouse. I pray this in the name of my savior Jesus Christ – and all God’s people said – AMEN!

Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

Stepping Stones: Don't Spoil the Brownies!

Transformational Tip
Faith is everything. Faith is a gift given to all of us; we just have to find a way to not mess it up. Read what Jesus tells us in Mark 9:23 – that all things are possible to him who believes. So what gets in our way? Unbelief. This is where Satan spends most of his time. His lies, deceptions, are crafted to create and foster unbelief. As Michael Pink wrote: Letting unbelief into our minds spoils our faith. It’s like putting dog do-do into the brownie mix…doesn’t take much to spoil the brownies.
Remember the simple formula to spiritual maturity; Believe > Receive > Become. Today, take a deep look and identify an area of your life where unbelief/deception has a stronghold. Don’t believe God’s forgiveness is complete...you deserve more…God isn’t all powerful…You know what’s best for you…other people’s feelings or opinions are all powerful…looks/fashion are more important than God’s desires for us…I am too old to change…we all could go on with infinite examples. Prayer
Dear Father God,
I thank You for the wonderful gift of faith. I know that all things that come from You are perfect…and it is me that reduces my faith to the point that lets other things get in my way of Believing and then Receiving You in the full measure intended by You. I pray Father that You fill me with Your Holy Spirit. I say to You as the boy’s father said in Mark 9:24; “I do believe; help me overcome my disbelief.”
Fill me with faith Lord so that I may follow wherever You lead me. I want to follow wholeheartedly, with the anticipation of Your Joy and Peace quickening my pace. I don’t not know what lies ahead…but You know and that’s enough for me. I know that more blessings are right around the corner. I pray Lord that today You help me walk by faith, not by sight. Stepping Stones: Do Not Open That Box!

Transformational Tip
We have all heard the term “Pandora’s Box.” Pandora is a figure out of Greek mythology; and she came with a box, unbeknownst to her, that is filled with all the evils of this world. She was told to never open the box. But curiosity got the best of her and she opened the box…and in doing so released all this evil, sickness, pain and suffering. She tried shutting the box, but it was too late.
When we make bad decisions, there are known consequences that we accept the risk of happening. But when we choose trouble, cross the line of right and wrong, we are in a way opening Pandora’s box…opening ourselves up to the infinite amount of unknown consequences. I have a personal example to share with you.
I was speeding (the bad decision) while traveling cross country to visit my brother. Was stopped by a police officer and received a ticket which I was required to pay in 30 days. I forgot to pay that ticket (another bad decision). Over a year later I was once again driving out of state and yes, speeding again. Got pulled over in Ohio and was informed that my driver’s license had been suspended by Pennsylvania due to the unpaid ticket in Indiana. My car was impounded, got a ticket for driving under a suspension as well as a speeding ticket. Had a mandatory court appearance a week later which was schedule on the same day as a very important client meeting that I had to cancel. Had to post bail and then have a friend come and get me. To have my licenses reinstated I had to pay the fine in Indiana (with penalties), submit paperwork to Pennsylvania and wait. This whole ordeal final cost was $1,625.00 and days of lost time vs. taking the time to pay the original fine of only $124.00 on time.
Certainly not proud of this story, but it’s a mild example of what happens when you chose wrong over right – you open Pandora’s box and you have no idea what type of unknown consequences and how much evil will come out of the box.

Prayer
Dear Father God,
At times, I continue to dig my hole deeper and deeper vs. just climbing out of that hole. I am embarrassed of my poor choices…of my bad decisions. And as I look back at my poor choices and sinful ways, I see the huge ripple effect of pain and suffering my sins have caused me and those around me…more than I could have ever imagined. Help me to be mindful that opening Pandora ’s Box is the last thing I want and need. I pray Father that You help me live the life You have created for me, keep me from being my own worst enemy. I know Satan is trying hard to devour me…and at times it feels like I’m helping him do his dirty job. Raise me up Lord. Take my hand and help pull me out of this hole I am digging. I ask this in the name of Jesus – and all God’s people said - AMEN!

Stepping Stones: "I Have Sent Them..."

Transformational Tip
Know that as a believer you will not be of this world, but you have already been sent into this world…divinely appointed and placed. In John 17:20 Jesus actually prays not only for his current and present disciples, He prays for all future believers that we may be as one. Jesus prays that we will be one just as He and God are one. Amazing how instantly I felt such a strong bond with fellow believers I had never met before when I went to Kenya, Uganda, and especially in Iraq. Makes sense since we are spiritual family…brothers and sisters in Christ! Actually, I feel a stronger bond than with some of my biological family members.
Today, feel the sense of a community of believers. In some way…even in the smallest of ways…bring the message of Christ to others. Pray for someone in need, forward a past Stepping Stones Devotional to someone, offer kindness to someone who is in the midst of a storm. As one, let’s move God’s Word forward into this world.

Dear Father God,

Stepping Stones: Our Loaves and Fish, Multiplied

Transformational Tip
Here is how God has blessed us offering up our 5 loaves and 2 fish to feed many.
I subscribed my Dad to the newsletter. He loves it and now has renewed his faith. It has helped his wife through the loss of her mother. His comments-“ I am very grateful that you thought of me and sent me Stepping Stones Devotional. I had backslid so far that I didn't even realize it enough for it to bother me! It's like I'm Lazarus "coming forth" from the dead!' he suddenly died at age 67 just before he was to be baptized.
If left to my own devices, I tend to think of God as always ready to smack me for my sin. In my twisted thinking, God is only that way towards me – everyone else is accepted and lovingly forgiven. Stepping Stones is such a tangible reminder of God’s grace and unbelievable love for me (& everyone!!).
I do Bible studies with women in prison. I took about 20 of your devotionals in this past week and the women were so blessed. I had them look briefly through the devotionals and when one of them captured their heart, they would choose it and then read it and tell why they chose it. One by one, each shared how the one they chose was exactly where God had been speaking to them. It was a wonderful exercise in how God always confirms what it is He is trying to get across to us and how He speaks directly to the heart. So, thank you!
They are also being read by an Appalachian woman from the sticks who is in her 40's, who does not attend church, and no one around her does, whose husband is experiencing serious heart failure at present. She's at the end of her rope. She is learning about God in ways she has never even heard of before. She does not want to subscribe, but she asked me to keep forwarding them when I think they're "right." (And believe me, I send her 4-5 per week.)
As missionaries in Tanzania and your daily devotions are very fitting with many of the issues we face here. After the Father’s Day message, I went outside and played with my 7 and 8 yo daughters, hide-and-seek, kick the can, and capture the flag. It was the most fun we have all had in a long time.
Sometimes, I forget that it is up to the Lord God, to let me live one more day. I tend to assume that I will be here on earth tomorrow. But God wants us to live for today and today only, the future is His. You have been a great blessing to me, and now I know why my girlfriend loves your devotionals so much!

Stepping Stones: Stepping Stones Has A Big Toe

Transformational Tip
Try this…Close your eyes (after you are done reading this), then put your arms straight out in front of you(like a zombie pose). What saves you from falling on your face? Your ugly, smelly BIG TOE! We all need a big toe or we would fall on our face. But if our body was only big toes, we wouldn’t see the couch and would stub our big toe constantly. Without a stomach or heart, foot gets no nutrition to use the big toe. We need all our body parts working together in the amazing way God created. Well, God also described another body, the church, and the body parts are us believers. Like the human body, for maximal functioning, to glorify God, the parts need to work together, communicating with and supporting each other.
Stepping Stones started Feb. 19, in 6 months, we’ve sent 204,000 devotionals…the initial day was 650. This morning, 1390 people will get Stepping Stones from us directly and another 100 -250(possibly more) get it from you emailing it or printing it out and using it in prison ministry or small groups you lead. You send us amazing comments, which greatly encourage and enrich us, but we want the rest of this Stepping Stones community to also benefit, helping each other spiritually mature.
To achieve this goal, we started a Stepping Stones blog site…any of you can post a comment (anonymously if you want), read each other’s comments, and we can all benefit from collective wisdom, experiences, and perspectives. Don’t be shy as we are here to build each other up as Jesus modeled and God desires. Prayer
Dear God, You are amazing and an awesome creator…the way You made my body with all the intricacies of my eyeball and brain…and the simplicity of my big toe. Thank you also for the body of believers You have created, with Christ as our head. I am sorry for how all the Christian churches don’t work together as one united body…it must grieve You so to see this body fractured. I thank You for and pray You strengthen this part of the church body, the Stepping Stones Community, as we encourage, teach, and care for each other to be Lighthouses shining Your glory, love, and grace to all who need it, and helping each other stand firm in the waves and storms of this world. In Jesus’ name as the head of our body – AMEN!

Stepping Stones: Envy=God Doesn't Know Me

Transformational Tip
We've spent the last 3 days deconstructing envy...we pray it has been helpful to you. Today, the last in this series on envy, the Tip reveals the destructive, insidious lie, distortion, and belief behind envy. When you envy someone's possessions (we aren't talking about Godly traits or living that you see in someone else), what you're really saying is "I am not content with what I have, I deserve more, that ______ should be mine, not my neighbor's." If God makes the decisions regarding who has what, the core belief of envy is...God made a mistake! He didn't give me what I deserve...in fact, He gave it to someone else." If God really knows me, or loved me, He would give me what I want or "need". All part of the plot to make it seem like God isn't interested in us, doesn't love us, and can't help us....the lie also draws us away from God, sabotages the relationship God desires with and from us, then pushes us to rely on ourself.

Prayer
Dear God, Your love and grace for me are magnificent. Thank You so much for being perfect in all ways. I confess at times I see something another person has and wonder why I don't have that...and at times my strongly, resent that I don't have it and believe I deserve one, or even his. I regret, I sadden You as You have given me so much to be grateful for and I am blowing all those gifts off and wishing for the one I think I need, but You know isn't right for me at this stage of my development and skills. I yearn for a heart that seeks to grow, wants to change, and is willing to have the pain, in order to get the gain. God, I know You will share in that pain and provide peace and comfort, so help me be brave to step one Stepping Stone closer to the life that is within reach. In Jesus' name I find true contentment and absolution - AMEN!

Stepping Stones: Recalibration Feeds Envy

Transformational Tip
Yesterday, we looked at the envy trap Satan sets to get us off track of the path to Christ-likeness. Today, let's look at why we are so susceptible, over and over, to this envy trap. I remember my first paycheck, seemed like so much in high school, then in college. In med school, I had more bills and made 8000/yr and that seemed like so much. But then the third and fourth years of med school, I would work 60-100 hrs/wk for NO pay. Starting residency, I was so much in debt, hadn't had a paycheck in 2 years, and was desperate for money. That first month, I made 36,000/yr. it seemed like a million. I felt so rich...thought it would last forever...believed I was in financial heaven. I was able to buy a TV and bed(moved to California) and eat out when I wanted. Well, 6 months later, I was amazed at how little I now had at the end of the month. I didn't have enough. Residency year 2, I got a raise to 39,000/yr. Wow, I'm rich again. In 5 months, I started to get that "It's not enough" feeling. Year 4, I was making 45,000 and moonlighting to almost double that. Again, I felt rich, but in about 8 months I needed more. What was happening is the phenomena of recalibration. Our flesh is never satisfied. We have a certain setting for needs. Once we hit hat mark, we reset or recalibrate to a higher setting...we need more for the same satisfaction. Needing more as time goes on happens in a lot of areas... money...space in a kitchen or yard...alcohol or caffeine...more out of marriage now than I set when engaged...job satisfaction...needing 2, 3, or 4 cars. Our amnesia to where the real settings need to be, and this recalibration, dangerously dangle us right over the envy trap.
Today, examine your needs meter. Have your settings been calibrated much higher than really necessary. Evaluate where God would set them, or, how Jesus set His.
The real problem with envy, tomorrow.

Prayer
Dear Father, Thanks for meeting my needs. Help me understand the difference between real needs and desires, and be satisfied and thankful when You provide for my needs, not saying "thanks, but I need more". Help me focus on what I have and not I want I don't have. God, You are so awesome and Your design is perfect, help me be transformed through Godly decision-making and not conformed by fleshly decisions.
In Christ's perfectly calibrated offering and name, AMEN!

Stepping Stones: Apples Aren't Good For You

Transformational Tip
Yesterday, we introduced envy, and getting our joy from being with God, not having what others have. Digging deeper today, envy is one of the traps Satan sets for us, using our pride, flesh, and satisfy-me-now mentality against us. Satan deceives us...distorts our lenses...into believing that our fulfillment and joy in this life come from psychological, physical, or material answers. In the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve had this fantastic set up, direct relationship with God...but they weren't omniscient and they were gullible (like us). Satan got them to believe they needed an apple (not as appealing as a steak), instead of staying in relationship with God through obedience to His instructions, to meet their deep needs. The trap you see, is, if you believe your happiness and contentment is dependent on your external circumstances, or from someplace or someone else other than God, you are screwed. Those things weren't meant to bring you what you desire nor can they. God designed us specifically to be immune to those external things, so regardless of our circumstances, or more importantly, the mistakes we make(financial, marital, parenting, sin, etc) that damage our cicumstances, we still have access to a peace, comfort, and joy that is independent of who or what is around us.
Today, look inside and identify some of your traps...apples...that you have been tricked to believe will satisfy your real needs. Don't get trapped!

Prayer
Dear God, You and only You are the source of my joy, peace, and comfort. . I confess my need to control is the apple I grab for a lot. Help me grow in trust of Your control in my life and not have the need to trust my inadequate abilities. Please help me allow You to grow the eyes that see and ears that hear the traps Satan places in my path and choose the Stepping Stone You have for my movement forward to Christ-likeness. Strengthen me through Your Spirit to resist the temptations and impulses of my flesh so i don't get trapped and again, having to ask Your forgiveness for my me-centered mistakes. But thanks for Your endlsess grace and forgiveness. In Jesus' all providing death and resurrection, AMEN!
