Transformational Tip
I hate very few things…but I do hate the dentist chair. I recently had a root canal. As I look back at that debacle, I remember sitting in that chair…wow, I was so tense and anxious. The dentist must have picked-up on my facial expressions and body language and said, “it’s going to be OK, try and relax”.
His words sounded almost foolish to me. “Try to Relax”. I started thinking about how difficult it is to try (which requires effort and exertion) and relax (which requires an absence of effort and exertion) at the same time. See my point?
I got to thinking of how the words ‘Try’ and ‘Relax’ just don’t seem to fit together. And then I thought a bit further…how this doesn’t only apply to the dentist chair —but to my spiritual life as well.
In my relationship with Christ, I find myself pressing for God’s purposes, to understand what He wants from and of me…but my own interests seem to always creep into my thoughts. In those moments, the hardest thing for me to do is “try to relax”, and genuinely trust God for the outcome…especially during one of life’s storms. But that is where our level of faith is assessed and tested. Easy to tell others to “try to relax”, but how are you at application?
Today, during times when your heart becomes anxious, put into practice Psalm 46:10…rest confidently in His care. “Be still”…stop your efforts, look at the big picture…God’s perspective. “Know”…His love, sovereignty, omnipotence…His promises…His instruction. Know doesn’t only mean intellectual data accumulation, but real life intertwining of our life and His instruction. Like “Adam knew Eve”…they became as one flesh. Prayer
Dear Father God, I know that true rest can be found only in You. Help me to end my striving and to trust that You will provide. In Your loving arms I will find rest. Help me learn my confidence needs to come from who You are, what You do, Your character, promises, and instruction…and not from anything that is based on me or this world. Then after I am still and know, I listen to Your prompting and respond with great stewardship of my mind and body, doing Your will, not mine

Stepping Stones: Time Is An Embezzler
Transformational Tip
I was visiting my father in the intensive care unit a few days before his death. He was hooked up to so many machines; some keeping him alive…others taking measurements. There was one machine my dad watched most often. After asking him why, he told me that it was a machine that monitors his heart beat. I asked innocently what happened if his heart stops. The answer I expected was “an electrical shock triggers my heart to start beating again” or “nurses and doctors come running”. Instead my dad said, “there’s a little speaker on the back of the machine and it will say ‘good-bye Paul’ ”.
While he was just trying to be funny, his comment shocked me. It gave me a jolt of reality that my dad’s life was almost over…and before I know it, a speaker on the back of some machine will be telling me, “Good-Bye.”
In Psalm 90:12 Moses prayed; “Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” Thinking and knowing that our days are truly numbered should help us keep an eternal perspective, which in turn should help us make decisions and choices rank by eternal values.
Give some thought about time as an embezzler…coming in at night to steal days, weeks, even years of energy that could be used for more valuable kingdom pursuits that will fulfill you and glorify God. Try to remember to use each day for your God as if it were your last…for in the blink of an eye, it will be.
Today, examine the activities of your day. Are they kingdom focused? Even in doing the laundry, having the attitude of gratitude that you have clothes to wash, a machine to wash them in, and service to your family as an opportunity from God, will allow you to take a “mundane” task, and give it eternal perspective. If the task isn’t directly kingdom advancing, or indirectly as in the laundry example, you have to think about cutting it out, as it is an embezzler. Dear Father God, I thank You, Father, for this day and every day of life You give me. I know that each day is a gift from You. Help me, Lord, to live with eternity always in view. Stepping Stones: Who Controls Your Attitude?
Transformational Tip
I’d just moved into a new home. Spent the afternoon breaking down and cutting up all the cardboard boxes and binding them into neat bundles…then placed them on the curb for the next day’s trash removal.
A few days later, I returned home to find a plastic baggy tapped to my garage door. I could see there was a note in the bag and had a feeling that it was a “welcome to the neighborhood note.” I was wrong. It was a note with a shipping label that had come off one of the boxes I broke down a few days prior.
The note read; “Please make sure your trash is packaged in a way that doesn’t allow it to blow into your neighbor’s yard. I already have enough garbage in my life, I don’t need yours.” Wow…welcome to the neighborhood, indeed!
It was clear that I had contributed to making this person’s bad day even worse. I think he or she may have had many bad days.
I am learning that no matter what you do, you will never stops life’s bad turns. Traffic jams that cause you to miss that important appointment. Not getting that job or promotion. Someone being rude to you…someone’s trash blowing into your yard. Remember, God is the one who allows all things to happen. We don’t know why, but He does, and He has a plan.
You can live happily each day despite life’s ups and downs, but it can only be done through a dependence on Jesus Christ and a trust in God’s sovereignty and plan. The Apostle Paul tells us that he learned the secret of being content in every situation; that he can do everything through Him that gives me strength.
Today, remember it’s not what happens to you that counts…it’s how you choose to react to that situation that reflects your attitude, your heart, and is the fruit of your life. Stepping Stones: He Wasn’t Where He Should Have Been

I was driving over the holidays to visit family…stopped for a break at one of the mega rest stops off the turnpike. The place was crowded with holiday travelers…I ended up sitting at a table just next to a family of 4.
With my children grown, I still so much enjoy the voices of young children. I can still recall so clearly my daughters’ childhood voices…it’s a great source of joy for me.
One of children at the table next to me was a talker. About 10 years old, she was trying hard to get her father’s attention. “Daddy, when we get home can I…Daddy, what was your favorite Christmas gift…Daddy, Daddy...” As I was listening I realized I wasn’t hearing any response from dad, so I looked over and saw that he was looking completely the other way, not hearing a word his daughter was saying. He wasn’t even there…wasn’t where he needed to be. Eventually the little girls stopped trying…but she kept looking up at him with hopeful expectation that he was going to respond. He never did.
I, of course, have no way of knowing his circumstances or his thoughts, and I know that there were times as a young father that I was just as guilty of not engaging with my girls when they needed me…oh, how I long for the opportunity to go back and do it differently. I certainly am not judging that father, but it brought to mind how easily the distractions of the day and of the world can take our focus off the attention needed by our children.
Today, and everyday, try to really connect with your children or loved ones. After Jesus, these people in your life are the greatest gift God gives us. They are also the most important mission field most are ever called to. The easiest way to start showing your love, respect, and honor for them is giving them your full attention when they are talking to you. Dear Father God, I know that being faithful parents and guiding our children to You is very important to You. Stepping Stones: “Do you think you will eat all that?”

I was recently on a business trip to Miami. Got in the night before my meeting and decided to have dinner at an outdoor café. It was late; I was the only customer there. I ordered what I thought was an appetizer and dinner, but when the food came it was apparent that I ordered two full dinners. The waiter left and I began picking and choosing the best of the two plates.
Just then a homeless man quickly came to my table side and asked in a very polite manner; “Do you think you will eat all that?” The restaurant manager came to shoo the man away…but I told him that I had invited the man as my guest. The homeless man (dirty, a bit scary and a little drunk) took off his hat, brushed back his hair and took a seat across from me with the pride and excitement of being invited to join a royal feast.
We had a great meal together. I actually had to talk him into coffee and dessert. He confessed that alcoholism was the reason he was homeless. He gave me an open invitation to ask any questions I’d like. He was a gentle, smart man. It was one of the most interesting conversations I have ever had.
When the meal came to an end I asked Bill; “If I give you $20, can you promise me that you will use it for food?” After giving the offer some thought he said that he could not make that commitment to me…and that he didn’t want to lie to me…said he would most likely use it for whiskey. After a few minutes of silence he said; “I’ll make you a deal, I’ll use half for food and half for booze” and then stuck out his hand to shake on the deal.
As he got up to leave he asked; “do you think God sent you to me?” His question almost blew my off my chair. Then and now, I really don’t know who God sent to whom.

Dear Father God, I come to You with an open heart…I invite You into my life in an ever-increasing way. I pray, Father, that Your over-generous love will flow through me each day and touch those around me. I ask that You show me how to serve others, help others, and to give to others without expecting anything in return. I know Lord that there is no way I can out-give You, for You have already given me so much. I pray in the name of my teacher and Your Son, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children said - AMEN!

Stepping Stones: Don’t Impose a Premature Finish Line
Transformational Tip
Some children take off sooner and faster than others.
I come from a very large family…my siblings were all very different from each other. But I particularly recall the trouble my eldest brother had in getting off the ground. Poor grades…dropped out of school a number of times…a street fighter…always in some type of significant trouble. My parents tried as they may to raise him to greater heights, but nothing seemed to work. If we ended the race then, he would have been judged a failure.
Are you a parent of a low-flying child? Let me pass on a word of encouragement. That brother made a shift in his early twenties and now, by anyone’s standards, is a highflying success. Husband in a healthy marriage, father of a great family, master’s degree, and business owner. Most importantly, he is a man of deep faith who always finds time to let the Lord’s light shine from him onto those around him. At 60 years of age, he holds the admiration and praise of all his siblings.
Too often, we put premature finish lines on situations…judging them before all the data is in. God isn’t bound by time, is incredibly patient, is omnipotent, and has a flair for the dramatic, especially with timing. Don’t fall into Satan’s trap of judging yourself, others, circumstances, and especially God, too prematurely. You will be disappointed and lose out on many “miracles” of life.
Today, if you feel disappointed, anxious, sad, fearful, or like a failure, examine whether you are imposing a premature finish line on a situation. This puts God in a box and closes the curtain on the play at intermission. Realize, there is more of the show, game, course, left and seek God’s guidance for the next phase. Dear Father God, I pray that all parents reading this devotional receive from You wisdom and patience as they raise their children. Help them trust Your providence and grace, and to let go of their timelines for their children’s lives. Help us all use Your Son as an example as You patiently waited for His time to come. Help them, Father, listen to and obey You in this great calling of being a parent. I pray in the name of your son, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children said - AMEN!

Stepping Stones: Let Life Begin!
Transformational Tip
If you really want to experience love and life…then you must face the truth about your standing before God. Scripture repeatedly tells us that we are born with a sinful nature. It is this sin problem that keeps us from life…life as intended for us by God. Whether as an individual…or as a couple…unresolved sin will block even our most focused efforts at living. This is because the undeniable outcome of sin is slavery to our very worst impulses.
But thankfully, we have a wonderful alternative. You can reach out today in faith to truly begin living. Reach out today to receive your free gift of new life. Here are the words Jesus used to communicate this good news; “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that who-ever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16)
If you have taken this step already, then you have victory over this sin nature. It is complicated because there are 2 types of victory. First, there is the victory over the separation from God, death, and eternal damnation. Second, is the victory over the impulses, fleshly desires, and sinful ways of this earthly life.
Satan, however, is not going down without a fight. He will deceive you into thinking you aren’t victorious over your sinful ways, and will try to tempt, trap, attack, and have you even doubt your eternal security. You have the power and resources to be victorious in this life, but you have to trust them and use them.
Today, if you do not already know Jesus Christ in this intimate way, say the prayer below. For every human who invites Jesus into her or his heart…that is the moment when real life begins. If you really want to experience love and life…then you must face the truth about your standing before God. Scripture repeatedly tells us that we are born with a sinful nature. It is this sin problem that keeps us from life…life as intended for us by God. Whether as an individual…or as a couple…unresolved sin will block even our most focused efforts at living. This is because the undeniable outcome of sin is slavery to our very worst impulses.
But thankfully, we have a wonderful alternative. You can reach out today in faith to truly begin living. Reach out today to receive your free gift of new life. Here are the words Jesus used to communicate this good news; “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that who-ever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16)
If you have taken this step already, then you have victory over this sin nature. It is complicated because there are 2 types of victory. First, there is the victory over the separation from God, death, and eternal damnation. Second, is the victory over the impulses, fleshly desires, and sinful ways of this earthly life.
Satan, however, is not going down without a fight. He will deceive you into thinking you aren’t victorious over your sinful ways, and will try to tempt, trap, attack, and have you even doubt your eternal security. You have the power and resources to be victorious in this life, but you have to trust them and use them.
Today, if you do not already know Jesus Christ in this intimate way, say the prayer below. For every human who invites Jesus into her or his heart…that is the moment when real life begins. Stepping Stones: Love Him…Then Do What You Want
Transformational Tip
My mother was a great teacher…a great spiritual leader for her children and all those around her. She would simplify complex concepts for us. When it came to the question of obedience to God vs. our independence and “free-will” she made the message simple. She would always say “just love God with all you have…then do whatever you want. For if you truly love God, you will do nothing to hurt him.”
As I read today’s scripture I recall my mother’s teachings. Our Lord never insists on obedience. In fact, he stresses relationship. He pursues us across the multiverse, desiring fellowship and union with us even when we are disobedient. He even died for us to provide reconciliation, restoration and…relationship. Not to make us obedient.
If He wanted to motivate obedience, He would offer heaven to the obedient, or threaten to send the disobedient to hell. God does neither. Instead, He rewards or consequents us based on whether we are in relationship with Him or not.
God stresses very definitely what we ought to do, but He never forces us to do it. We find that we will obey Him out of love. Notice that when Jesus speaks about discipleship, He prefaced it with an "If," clearly telling us we have a choice. When we are in relationship with and really love Him, we will obey. If we are truly wise, we will follow His guidance…if we really want comfort, we will trust His direction.
Today, focus on growing your love for God. Focus less on the dos and don’ts and more on simply loving God. When you have a choice, ask yourself, “Why am a choosing this option?” hopefully you answer, “because I love God”, not because I need to do what is right. Stepping Stones: Battery Acid for the Soul
Transformational Tip
Christmas reminds or teaches us many principles related to God and us. Jesus was sent to bring peace on Earth…peace between God and us…for reconciliation. God is Holy, we are sinners. Our sin brings tremendous conflict and is a grievous transgression against God. We need forgiveness…that’s where Jesus enters.
Forgiveness is powerful, and is incredibly modeled to us throughout the Bible. We are involved in conflict in all of our relationships…even with ourselves. God commands to forgive those who transgress us…it glorifies Him.
There are two other reasons why we must act on the Scripture’s instructions to forgive. First, withholding forgiveness is harmful for us. It brings on bitterness, anger, resentment, isolation, depression, health problems, struggles with addictions…and so many more ugly things. Neal T. Anderson wrote that it’s like “battery acid for the soul.”
The second reason is maybe even more distressing. Scripture tells us that if we withhold forgiveness from one another, the Father will withhold forgiveness from us.
Today, in ’10, choose to forgive more. Forgive someone from whom you have been withholding forgiveness. It’s not my kingdom come…it’s “Thy kingdom come.” Then trust God to bring healing to your feelings and memories once we choose to forgive. Bless me, Father, with quickness to forgive in all situations. I trust in You, Lord, that once I forgive, You will provide me with Your healing power. I pray in the name of the one You sent to die for my forgiveness and to teach me to forgive, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children said - AMEN!

Stepping Stones: Lay That Stone Down
Transformational Tip
Try as I may, I find that my brokenness and sin of the past is like huge stone hanging around my neck. Carrying that stone brings guilt, shame and weakness. I know and believe I have been forgiven, but I struggle with laying that stone down and walking away from it.
Our yesterdays hold broken and irreversible things for us. It is true that we have lost opportunities that will never return, but God can transform this destructive guilt and anxiety into a constructive thoughtfulness and hope for a transforming future.
Trusting God’s forgiveness is a big and difficult stretch…for most, myself included, really receiving God’s forgiveness takes time. For me, I had to work up to this huge step of trust by practicing, implementing, and applying trust in much smaller areas of life and my relationship with God.
Trusting Him when…there is an illness…a flat tire…change of my plans…someone else is in charge…a deadline is changed…a random bill comes into the mix… protection for my children is needed…I don’t feel loved or valued. Like any skill, starting small, practicing, then stretching it, can lead to powerful skills. Trust is the same way. Trusting in His power of forgiveness is one of the richest skills you can develop. Let the past rest, but let it rest in the sweet embrace of Jesus Christ.
Today, leave the broken, irreversible past in His hands, and step out into the invincible future with Him. Start by trusting Him, His agenda, promises, character, and instruction in 5 situations today. You already do, but learn that it is trusting in God so you can grow it. Let me remember and be accountable for my past brokenness and sin…but let it not keep me from moving toward you with freedom. I pray in the name of the one who You sent to lift the burdens of my past, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children said - AMEN!

Stepping Stones: Smaller Steps Achieves Bigger Goals
Transformational Tip
At this time of year, I feel as if I need to make progress in leaps and bounds…to take big steps toward my goals. Then I begin worrying about all the obstacles of tomorrow and the days ahead. So I have to keep reminding myself of the value of breaking the journey down into small steps.
Trying to jump to the top of the mountain all in one leap never works. We try several times, hitting halfway up the mountain each time, then slide down…being tired, our next several attempts hit 40% of the way up the mountain, then slide down. Eventually, we get tired of trying and just quit.
The need to climb the mountain one step at a time and establish base camps, so in case we slide down a little bit, we can re-group at our last base camp, assess why we slid, and power back up the mountain…again, in small, doable steps.
Jesus encouraged us not to worry about tomorrow since today has enough of its own problems. In the weakness of turbulent and unsteady emotions, we may need to settle for smaller steps to allow us to reach our goals. The wisdom of the moment provided by God, and the ever-present reassurance of the One who says, “I will never leave you nor forsake you” provide the breeze for our sails.

Stepping Stones: Guarantee: Time Passes – What Will You Do?

Happy New Year! Seems like last year was Y2K and all the commotion about street lights going crazy…retirement funds being depleted…financial chaos on Wall Street…no water and food being available…people reserving generators over one year in advance. Then 9/11/01 and the economy crashing. Wow! This decade has blown by quickly.
I’ve never met anyone who thinks time has passed slowly. Really, the only thing we are guaranteed in life (assuming the Rapture doesn’t occur), is this…Time Passes! Unless you die, time passes, and as we’ve noted…time passes, quickly.
So here’s my point…Putting the above observations together, we are guaranteed that Jan 1, 2011, will be here very quickly. Just preparing you. The question you need to ask yourself, “Do I want to be in the same positions, shoes, state of mind, level of maturity, degree of impact on family and friends, as I am now?…or do I want more from myself!” We all want to grow. In fact, God commands us to mature, to go from milk to solid food. If you aren’t going forward, then you are going backward. Life is much easier and more fulfilling when we are growing.
Growth starts with setting a goal…then realizing where you are now, and developing a strategy to navigate life from where you are now to progress to your goal. To make growth happen, self-reflection and assessment are key. 12/31 is a time most look back and assess, but it is hard to assess one year in a just a few minutes. That’s just lazy and shortsighted. You didn’t get this way overnight and you don’t assess it in a few hours.
Today, write down who you want to be on 1/1/11. Be very descriptive about your spiritual, emotional, thinking, and relational world. Then commit to 15-30 minutes per day of some serious self-reflection/assessment. The return on this small investment will be life-changing. Dear Father God, You are so Holy and amazing, I am in awe. To make growth happen, self-reflection and assessment are key. 12/31 is a time most look back and assess, but it is hard to assess one year in a just a few minutes. That’s just lazy and shortsighted. You didn’t get this way overnight and you don’t assess it in a few hours.
Today, write down who you want to be on 1/1/11. Be very descriptive about your spiritual, emotional, thinking, and relational world. Then commit to 15-30 minutes per day of some serious self-reflection/assessment. The return on this small investment will be life-changing. Dear Father God, You are so Holy and amazing, I am in awe. Stepping Stones: Only One Resolution Needed
Transformational Tip
So many of us use New Year’s Eve and Day to make resolutions…to try and “fix” our shortcomings…to focus on our failures. So many resolutions are made…and within a few days or weeks they are broken.
Remember, that the world we live in is fallen and that we are part of that brokenness. In this fallen world, all our default settings are tainted by sin. Trying to “fix” yourself, by yourself, is futile. It’s like trying to put all the pieces of a broken mirror back together to get a true reflection. There is only one resolution needed…to develop the Mind of Christ. Growing closer to God, yearning for Him, then glorifying Him with your internal and external functioning.
Developing the Mind of Christ can’t happen without the Holy Spirit. Stepping Stones: Go Ahead, Drop In
Transformational Tip
Woke up feeling very sick the other day…knew I needed to see a doctor. Instead of trying to make an appointment, I decided to just drop by my doctor’s office and try to have the receptionist “fit me in.” Big mistake. You would have thought I committed some federal offense. Regardless of my condition…no appointment, no visit.
Amazingly, you can “drop in” on someone far more important and much busier than your family doctor, in the middle of flu season…and you can be 100% confident that He will push all other business aside and focus completely on you. His undivided attention will be yours. Just imagine the Creator of heaven and earth yearning to have a personal relationship with you.
Not only are you able to “drop in”, but He has actually been knocking on the door of your heart…all the time. His Holy Spirit is talking to you in your spirit, and God the Father is talking to you in how He manipulates your circumstances. Because of His love for you, He wants to guide and protect you from so much garbage and heartache…unfortunately, we don’t listen to the doctor’s orders and wonder why the disease still affects us.
Today, drop in on Him…pray 3 extra times today. He rejoices every time you “drop in” for a visit. The more you drop in, the better you will hear His knocking on the door of your heart. But it’s up to you, if you don’t listen to the Great Doctor’s treatment plan, the disease will destroy you. Remember, no matter how busy, THE DOCTOR always has time for you. Dear Father God, I thank You, Father, that I can talk with You. I thank you for listening to my words, thoughts, fears. Stepping Stones: Make Yourself Third
Transformational Tip
Being a big sports fan as a kid, I didn’t read many books. But when Gale Sayers, a famous football player, wrote I am Third…I couldn’t wait to read it. I was surprised…it had hardly any football, but it was attention grabbing. The movie made from the book, Brian’s Song, was the first movie I ever cried at. Dr James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family, often writes about the “I am Third” approach to life as well; God first, others second, myself third.
We live in a world where the “I am Third” approach to life is in total misalignment with the messages we are bombarded with in TV ads; “Have it your way”… “Because I’m worth it”…”You deserve a break today”…”I need it”…”Me first”… ”My way or the highway”…”It’s all about you”.
The messages are endless and we get tem from every direction…especially coming from inside us. Our flesh is always crying out for “ME FIRST!”
In today’s Scripture Jesus tells us clearly what our first obligation is…to follow Him. And to do so we must deny ourselves.
Today, take note of how many times you make yourself first vs. third. Try to put into practice the concept of God first, others second, you third. Stepping Stones: The Faster I Go…the Behinder I Get
Transformational Tip
There is a human natural phenomenon; the more behind we are the faster we tend to go. Once we get lost, we start driving faster. When we don’t know what we are talking about we begin to talk faster and louder. My mother taught her children little sayings to register her lessons in our minds. One of her favorite sayings; “The faster I go…the behinder I get.”
During severe storms, sometimes the best action we can take is to drop anchor. An anchor wedges itself deep into the rocks and sand and keeps the vessel and crew from being set dangerously adrift…and possibly crashing into the rocks. In our personal storms and most stressful moments we need to be anchored securely…not in wishes and hopes…but securely in God’s promises.
Satan wants us to run quickly and often blindly toward the many false, hollow, deathtraps masquerading as truth and refuge for the many storms that come our way. God’s promises, character, instruction, and Word ground us to the truth and equip us to be steady in every storm and victorious in any challenge Satan brings and God allows (yes, allows) in our life to grow the mind of Christ in us.
Today, take comfort in knowing that we have a secure anchor when storms threaten us. When you are faced with uncertainty, a storm, discomfort…just STOP and THINK. What does God promise, say, or say to us in these kinds of situations. We may not know what the future holds for us – but we can rest in the knowledge that our souls are safe once anchored to God. Stepping Stones: This is for me?
Transformational Tip
Each year on Christmas Eve Day, I have a tradition of delivering a small gift to the people who provide a service to me throughout the year. The postman, butcher, coffee-shop owner, etc. I’ve been doing it for years. The gifts are always received with such happiness and delight.
This year, as I was walking toward the coffee shop to deliver a bottle of wine, I stopped into a local oriental rug store to pick up a rug I had ordered the week before. The owner of the store greeted me when I walked in. He’s been in that same location for 25 years now. He’s a wheeler-dealer, an all-business kind of guy…he rarely smiles. He and I had a fairly intense negotiation session over the rug I purchased the week prior.
As I reached to shake his hand he noticed the gift wrapped bottle of wine I was carrying (the coffee-shop owner’s gift, remember). Mistakenly assuming the gift was for him, he reached for it with his other hand and said; “this is for me?”…and then began thanking me profusely. His face lit up, almost in shock, and he started searching for something to give me in return. He also sells imported tea in his shop…so he grabbed a box containing a selection of exotic teas and gave it to me with pride and joy.
I was struck by how this simple act of (unintended) kindness brought such happiness to this man. For a few minutes that gift transformed this man’s life. We talked a bit more and then I left with my rug…the smile remained on his face the entire time. Based on his reaction…this man was in desperate need of some attention and kindness.
Today, think of one or two people whose lives you might change, even for a few minutes, by delivering some unexpected kindness. There are so many people around us who live in quiet desperation. I don’t think you will have to look far…maybe one of those people live in your same house. Be a Lighthouse and shine God’s love on others. Stepping Stones: Called Alongside to Help

While the Christmas holidays are a time of joy and excitement for some, it’s also the most painful and lonely time of year for many others. Missing a loved one, the stress of not having enough money for gifts, not getting the gifts we expect, being estranged from someone we love…so many factors having the potential to bring us down. Especially after Christmas, when Christmas expectations go unmet, many people really struggle and suffer.
It’s the time of year when encouragement of others can do more than you can ever imagine. The Greek translation of the word encouragement is “parakletos”, which means “called alongside to help.” Encouragement can be offering an uplifting word, but it can also be so much more than that.
Showing someone they have value, dignity, and are deserving of respect by you taking action…do something for them…has amazing power over people. Show them they matter to you and to God by putting aside your needs in favor of theirs. The idea they are created in God’s image, have value, and God sacrificed His son for them needs to be tangibly brought to them. You are the vehicle God will use to get them this life-saving message.

Stepping Stones: Where Will You Put Christmas Tomorrow?

MERRY CHRISTMAS! Our prayers from Lighthouse Network to you is for a year of growing closer to God, maturing in your Christian walk (not just knowledge), and further developing the mind of Christ.
Today is a day of great celebration, remembering the greatest gift given to us. Many went to church yesterday or will go today. We will also celebrate today with those we love, exchanging gifts as symbols of our love, and making more memories and adding another chapter of Christmas traditions. But, to be honest with you, part of me gets angry about Christmas Day.
You see, as a Christian especially, we are so blessed that Christmas is really everyday…all 365 days a year, Christ and God’s grace is abundantly given to us. Every day is Christmas! Satan has put out a lie that all the other days are not special, are just ordinary at best, and often, are even terrible days. Unfortunately, we fall into the trap of believing those lies. Celebrating Christmas one day a year, I believe, allows people to enjoy it just one day, then carve it out of their life as they put it back in the attic with the Christmas tree ornaments, lights, wreaths, wrapping paper, table cloth and placemats, until the next Dec 25.
Today, make a commitment to yourself and God to not put Christmas away in the attic of your heart…keep it in the kitchen of your heart… accessible daily with the rest of your staples for surviving and living. Each day will have new meaning, your lenses will be more God-centered, and the goal of the mind of Christ will be much closer. Dear Father God, Christmas is beautiful and I am overwhelmed with Your love, gift, and death for me. Actually for me, a sinner like me. It is still so unbelievable that the King of Kings, Lord of Lords would actually die for me. I regret that I put Christmas away in the attic sometimes instead of living out of and in that joy daily. Help me see Your gift and presence daily, and to allow me to shine like a Lighthouse bringing Christmas to all those I contact, daily. I pray in the name of the star of Christmas, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children said - AMEN!
The Truth
But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

Stepping Stones: Shopping…For What?

Well, Christmas is almost here…how are you doing with your shopping list? Shopping isn’t my thing, never was, never will be. Since I don’t like shopping, I got to be a Christmas Eve shopper…really is a lot of funner. People are in better moods…excitement in the air…less than 24 hours till Christmas…everything really festive wherever you go. Try it.
But, you see, shopping is about finding something to fill a need for someone. To me, shopping is for not a just a want, but a need. As a psychiatrist, as I think about “shopping” for something to help someone’s need, the items people need aren’t found in any store. Value…purpose…connection…identity…security…consistency… meaning… competence… love…relationship with our almighty Creator and Father, our God. These precious needs are what we all desire and need…what we are all yearning for. We wish they could be easily bought and given to us.
This is the true and amazing story of Christmas. God gave us the most loving and unbelievable gift of all time to really meet all our needs. It cost Him and Jesus a lot…but it is truly free to us. Really, it is the grandest gift ever given. That is what we are blessed to celebrate on Christmas Day.
Today, think how you will receive God’s gift, daily, to affect the issues you struggle with…to address and meet your needs. God has given you what you need, learn how to use it. Stepping Stones: Glorious Reunions
Transformational Tip
When I was a young father, my job required that I travel abroad. At times, I would have to be away for up to a whole week…away from my little girls. I recall the separation from my four young daughters as being almost unbearable. I also remember the “catch-my-breath” moments when I would see their beautiful little faces looking out the window as I pulled up the driveway returning home from those seemingly endless business trips. Each reunion was glorious...melting my heart with love, joy, and excitement. They didn’t forget me, they loved me, and they were wanting more of me.
I’m thinking, each time we turn toward God in prayer, after a time away from Him, that He feels the way I felt when reuniting with my children after time away from them. Glorious reunions. But the difference is… we are the one leaving our Father. He is always there, pursuing us with joyous anticipation and hopeful expectation of that glorious reunion.
In this world, finding and getting something so awesome usually takes a lot of work, effort, time, and/or resources. But this glorious reunion is so easy to be part of…God sent His son, Jesus, to open the door to this glorious reunion. We just need to claim it through faith in Christ as our Savior, and continue it through confession, prayer, and putting on the His armor for Godly living.
Today, examine your heart and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal what diverts you from reuniting with God on a more regular basis throughout the day. Reading Stepping Stones daily is a great start, but we need to have many glorious reunions everyday. our goal is to have one day that is a continuous glorious reunion with Hom all day long. Stepping Stones: The “I Deserve….” Trap

There are so many manifestations of our sinful nature. One that I have noticed in others (and in myself) lately is this false notion of “I deserve…..” I deserve the best deal, I deserve more credit, I deserve the lion’s share…I deserved the finest of everything. We are even encouraged by others. How many times has someone said to you “go ahead…you deserve it”? From the early days of childhood we see the impulses to focus on ourselves. The “My kingdom come, my will be done” mentality.
The I-deserve-it trap has many pitfalls. One such pitfall is it’s damaging effect on relationships and marriage; who works the hardest? who spends more? who’s not doing enough to serve the other? And all of a sudden anger begins to fester because we are not getting what we deserve. We often feel the person on the other side of the relationship is standing in the way of what I deserve…they become the enemy, or, at the very least, aren’t my teammate.
Today, notice when you aren’t feeling content…feel hurt, frustrated, angry, sad, or anxious. Most likely it’s because you got caught in the “I deserve…” trap. Put your finger on what you feel you deserve…then replace it with acknowledging the grace from God that you are even able to be alive and read this devotional. What makes you deserving of that, let alone anything more. Be aware that as soon as we begin to think we are entitled to more we are entering the land of selfishness… and this is a very slippery slope. Stepping Stones: It Really is Your Choice
Transformational Tip
So many of us tend to believe that our current situation determines the quality of our lives…determines our happiness. We feel happy when things go “our way”, and sad when things don’t turn out as we had hoped. Because that is an important part of our belief system…we pour so much time and energy fretting over and trying to control or change our current situation or our future. We rarely think about what really is the connection and correlation between our circumstances and our well-being.
We need to understand and remember that the distance we place between ourselves and God is what truly controls the quality of our lives…and our feelings. We have a choice. We can live as close to God as we choose. He does not set up any barriers between us and Him…nor does He take any barriers down that we erect. He resources us with Jesus, the Holy Spirit, confession, and many spiritual tools to reduce those barriers. But it is up to us to decide to use them. How closely we live to Him really is our choice. That’s how He created us. Free will.
Peace really comes from the inside, and is not based on the outside. If your peace is based on your external circumstances, all is vanity, you are like the animals. God always pursues us…being close to Him, using His resources, instruction, promises, and character, will bring us an understanding, contentment, and peace that will overwhelm us. It will also force people to ask you how you handle adversity so well.
Today, assess yourself. Do you have peace when circumstances go your way, but are unsettled, disrupted, overwhelmed, or frustrated when life doesn’t go your way. Put more energy into trusting God and enjoying His Holy presence. Do not let your well-being depend on the situation at hand. Instead, try connecting your joy to Him and you will find that it is possible to be content through Him in every situation. Stepping Stones: Pain Relief and Healing
Transformational Tip
I cut my finger the other day. Didn’t give it the care it needed at the time…just threw a bandage on it to stop the bleeding. Infection set in and the injury got my attention. I went to buy an antibiotic ointment to aid the healing and found a leading brand ointment that had an interesting claim; “Healing and pain relief.” The cut was creating some discomfort for me, so I choose the product that offered more than healing.
The Holy Scripture tells us that Christ’s mission was to come to forgive and to save…to provide for us with “eternity.” He came to deliver oh so much more than just our redemption. He brought us eternal freedom, fulfillment, peace and joy.
The prophet Isaiah tells us the Messiah will come to bind up and heal, to release and set free (while we are here on earth). Jesus himself referenced this passage as captured in Luke 4:17. Think about that; Christ came not only to forgive you, but to restore and release you. This is the central passage in the entire bible about Jesus. He fulfilled all the prophesies, testifying to the truth, dying for us to bring ultimate healing and shalom to our lives and His relationship with us.
Today, take Jesus Christ at his word…the healer of all the broken pieces within you and unite them into one whole and healed heart. Think what life would be like if you believed that promise. Stepping Stones: Who’s Your Counselor?

We all have so many unanswered questions about ourselves; Am I really a good person? Am I truly lovable? Why do I do the things I do? Why do I feel the way I feel? While we struggle to answer these questions for and by ourselves, it’s difficult to get to the core answers without a true counselor.
The combination of our arrogance and pride—I don’t need any therapy, thank you very much—and the fact that it’s become a profession with a stigma attached—mental illness, Freud, and Prozac and all that—has kept most of us from realizing that we do need counseling. All of us. As Christians, thankfully, we have the best councilor living right inside us.
The Bible tells us Jesus sends us his Spirit as Counselor…that ought to make it clear. In fact, we apparently need quite a lot of counsel—the Spirit isn’t just stopping in to give us a tune-up; not even an annual checkup. He has come to stay and give us a complete makeover…from the inside out. Now, we just need to figure out how to “hear” His counsel and quit sabotaging His efforts in our life.
Today, confess your sins, then talk to God about a struggle issue in your life. Open His word…read the Christmas and Easter story…then listen for His counsel. If you have trouble following the counsel, or continue to sabotage His efforts, think of getting someone to help show you how to listen and follow His counsel. Stepping Stones: Eliminate Worry-Time
Transformational Tip
A book written about ten years ago titled the Knowing-Doing Gap. The book’s premise; in general we all know what we should and should not do, but there is a huge gap between knowing and actually doing. We shouldn’t smoke…but we do. We should overeat…but we do. We shouldn’t worry…but we do. At Lighthouse Network, we call that your Intellectual Creed vs your Behavioral Creed.
For many, to try not to worry is like trying not to think about something; the more we try, the more anxious we become. So we even begin to worry about worrying. Trying to fight this battle alone gets to be so counterproductive.
Perspective…how we view ourselves, God, and the circumstances He allows in our live…is the key to good decision-making. Will you have God’s perspective or your own. Big difference. Sometimes it is hard to have God’s perspective, but the more time you spend with Him, the more time you get to know Him and His perspective becomes much clearer to you. Stop focusing on worry and put your energy in communicating with God. This strategy will help you achieve freedom from all sorts of negative behavior, including worrying. The idea is simple; replacing hurtful, self-defeating tendencies with something wonderfully positive – communicating with your Creator and Savior.
Today, don’t just talk to God…listen to Him as well. He speaks to you through His Holy Word, His Holy Spirit, the circumstances He allows in your life, and through other believers. As you give yourself more and more to communicating with Him, you will find your worry-time evaporating and the knowing-doing gap closing. Your intellectual creed will become your behavioral creed. A book written about ten years ago titled the Knowing-Doing Gap. The book’s premise; in general we all know what we should and should not do, but there is a huge gap between knowing and actually doing. We shouldn’t smoke…but we do. We should overeat…but we do. We shouldn’t worry…but we do. At Lighthouse Network, we call that your Intellectual Creed vs your Behavioral Creed.
For many, to try not to worry is like trying not to think about something; the more we try, the more anxious we become. So we even begin to worry about worrying. Trying to fight this battle alone gets to be so counterproductive.
Perspective…how we view ourselves, God, and the circumstances He allows in our live…is the key to good decision-making. Will you have God’s perspective or your own. Big difference. Sometimes it is hard to have God’s perspective, but the more time you spend with Him, the more time you get to know Him and His perspective becomes much clearer to you. Stop focusing on worry and put your energy in communicating with God. This strategy will help you achieve freedom from all sorts of negative behavior, including worrying. The idea is simple; replacing hurtful, self-defeating tendencies with something wonderfully positive – communicating with your Creator and Savior.
Today, don’t just talk to God…listen to Him as well. He speaks to you through His Holy Word, His Holy Spirit, the circumstances He allows in your life, and through other believers. As you give yourself more and more to communicating with Him, you will find your worry-time evaporating and the knowing-doing gap closing. Your intellectual creed will become your behavioral creed. Stepping Stones: You Control the Switch
Transformational Tip
I’ve noticed…there are so many unhappy people I encounter every day. And they are all so quick to blame their unhappiness on things that are out of their control; the economy, the government, their circumstances…or other outside factors robbing them of joy and happiness. But there is a list of objectives and desires that are within our control: a close relationship with God, a clear purpose in life, a commitment to help someone in greater need than ourselves, and maybe, a deeper commitment to our faith.
These are all honorable desires and are all things we as individuals can do something about…without outside human help. No stimulus package or government program will assist here, and tough economic times cannot steal these ideals. These life goals are achieved as we allow God’s Word to rule in our hearts and as we receive the Spirit’s strength to build up the inner man resulting in true joy.
In our complicated world, it’s tempting to put our pursuit for what we desire into the hands of others—to expect an outside entity to fulfill our desires. While we sometimes need help and we cannot live in isolation, it’s not outside sources that provide true happiness…that must come from within, your decision. You control the switch…will you shine brightly or switch the light off.
Today, remember that blaming your unhappiness on things that are out of your control is an excuse. Change your lenses, change your life. Stepping Stones: Train to Use the Right Tools
Transformational Tip
My Dad was a carpenter…he did beautiful things with wood. When I would compliment his work, he always humbly said the same thing…“It’s easy when you have the right tools.” I was always amazed and what he created, how he could sculpt something wonderful and exquisite from a block of ordinary wood. Having the right tools is important, but he also was too humble to admit the need for training in how to most efficiently use the right tools.
Once you start believing that you need His help, you will begin receiving all the tools…all the equipment to handle whatever comes your way. His promises to be near you and to take care of you, exhortations that help you avoid sinful snares, the gift of forgiveness when you “miss the mark,” the Holy Spirit to live in you and empower you. He provides all the tools you need to do the job…but you have to make the effort to train and use what He provides.
Satan also provides tools…amazing how we become better at using Satan’s tools and not God’s. Why? Does material and physical gain mean that much to us than the emotional, relational, psychological, and spiritual gain that God promises? Just look at Tiger Woods…all the material gain a person could achieve, but floundering in misery, insecurity, and fear. What tools are you using? God’s tools lead to real life transformation…Satan’s lead to conformity to the world.
Today, reflect for a moment on all that is provided to you by Him through Christ, the Bible, and His Holy Spirit. Compare these to Satan’s tools. You make the call, which set will you choose to train in and use. Stepping Stones: Just Like the Wise Men
Transformational Tip
We all need a guiding light. A star of guidance to lead us in our lives. By keeping God as our guiding star we will know how to put one foot in front of the other on our daily path. To walk in the way of peace we must follow Him wholeheartedly, like the “Wise Men” did 2000 years ago.
If we drift slightly from following His lead, we’re on a slippery slope for disaster. We will still be able to see Him, just a bit, for a while…but as we drift, eventually we lose sight of Him altogether, and once again be lost in the darkness. We all have lived in darkness and know how that feels. Veering even a few degrees of course takes us far from Him. The most important thing at that point is to realize and accept that we have lost our way. If we are humble enough, we can call out to Him for help. He will hear our cry and come to our rescue…leading us back on the path of Peace to develop the Mind of Christ.
Today, like the Wise Men did on the eve of Christ’s birth, look for that star of guidance in your life provided by our true and living God...and be willing to following wherever He may lead you. He is the light from on high…the ultimate Lighthouse that illuminates your way. But also identify a false light, something in your life that is leading you astray. Commit to turning from it and let the true light led you. WITHIN REACH helps you identify and turn from those false stars we all get tricked by. Stepping Stones: Have Bold Expectations!
Transformational Tip
There was this quarry in the middle of a city park in the town where I grew up. There was a fence that separated the people from the water…along the fence, signs were clearly posted – “No Fishing”. Because there was no fishing the lake was full of fish…big fish. When we would walk up to that fence, the fish would come swarming toward us; a real temptation for me and my older brother Jamie, who spent long hours at that park. I must confess we did jump that fence on occasion and fish for a few minutes. We didn’t even have to bait the hook. The fish came expecting food…they certainly had bold expectations.
So, why did the fish come immediately flapping their fins? Because our mere presence set off a conditioned response in their tiny fish brains that told them we had something special to give them. Wow, what if we always had this awesome response to God and as He desires to give us good gifts—a response based on our past experience with Him that flows from a deep-seated knowledge of His character. Especially His love that gave us the greatest gift of all…Jesus…to die for us and buy our freedom from sin and eternal salvation.
Today, swim and swarm toward God with bold expectations. Expect great things from Him. Pray with bold expectancy; for prayer without expectation is unbelief in disguise. Click here to share with the Stepping Stones community your thoughts on having bold expectations.

Like those fish, let me come to you with bold expectations…to get heaping portions of Your mercy and grace. I know Father that You have all that I need. I pray in the name of Your greatest gift, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children said - AMEN!

For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. Or what man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!

Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Stepping Stones: Who Do You Fear?

Share your cookie…say nice things…let your friend go first…let’s not keep score to promote sportsmanship. The Golden Rule - Love your neighbor as yourself. We all learned, or were at least lectured, about the importance of being nice to others. Pleasing people can be quite rewarding…not pleasing people can bring a lot of downside. One key is, “what motivates me to please people?”
I just recently came to the realization of just how much of my life is controlled and hampered by fear of people. This condition has been so prevalent in my life that I failed to recognize it most of my life…I just accepted it as part of my daily existence. My fear does not come from thinking they will hurt me or do me harm, my fear comes from the possibility of displeasing them and therefore not getting what I need (or think I need) from them.
Today, stop and think about how much of your life is hampered by fear of people. Then try this two-pronged approach for dealing with this crippling fear. First, replace your fear of displeasing people with the dread of displeasing the Lord of your universe. Secondly, develop a deeper trust in God. Instead of trying to please people so they will give you what you want, trust in Him – the Supplier of all your needs. I pray in the name of the ultimate pleaser of the world, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children said - AMEN!

Stepping Stones: Choose the Focus of Your Mind
Transformational Tip
You have the ability to choose the focus of your mind. Of course there are many thoughts that come and go spontaneously, but you can control your thinking more than you realize. Under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, Paul the apostle tells us; whatever is true…whatever is noble…whatever is right…to think about such things.
Because the world contains both good and evil, you can choose to think about praiseworthy things or terrible, upsetting things. There are times that you must deal with the brokenness around you, this is inevitable. However, there are times during the day when you are free to choose the focal point of your mind. This is the time to take charge of your thoughts. When your mind is idle it often moves to negative thoughts such as regretting something in your past or worrying about the future. Prayer
Dear Father God, I am so thankful that You are “God with us” constantly and for all eternity. I want that knowledge alone to be sufficient to fill my days with joy and peace. However, Father, I confess that my mind so easily slips out of focus…and I forget about your ever-presence. When this happens, You slip even further from my awareness…and then worries and worldliness attack my mind. Help me, Lord, to train my mind to constantly turn to You. I want You to be my positive focus, but I need Your help. I pray in the name of my model for single-mindedness, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children said - AMEN!
The Truth
So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.”
Matthew 1:22-23
Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.

But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.

You have the ability to choose the focus of your mind. Of course there are many thoughts that come and go spontaneously, but you can control your thinking more than you realize. Under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, Paul the apostle tells us; whatever is true…whatever is noble…whatever is right…to think about such things.
Because the world contains both good and evil, you can choose to think about praiseworthy things or terrible, upsetting things. There are times that you must deal with the brokenness around you, this is inevitable. However, there are times during the day when you are free to choose the focal point of your mind. This is the time to take charge of your thoughts. When your mind is idle it often moves to negative thoughts such as regretting something in your past or worrying about the future. Stepping Stones: Take His Yoke
Transformational Tip
I always thought the idea of being “yoked” was one of those concepts that just didn’t fit in with my way of thinking…that it always seemed inconsistent with God’s message and the teachings of Jesus Christ. But when I read that passage today I had an entirely different perspective. The yoke can symbolize many concepts, especially Him taking some of my burden, but one application really struck me today.
I felt that He must have a purpose in this instruction and I am sure that He does not plan to use me in some mechanistic way. I see the yoke now as a vibrant kinship between me and my God as He lives in and through me. I see now that His yoke is not restrictive, harsh or pressing…rather it is comfortable, gracious and pleasant. He tells us that the yoke is necessary to learn from Him. I am believing more and more, that only He knows what is best for me.
Today, remember that only God knows what is best for you. Listen to and follow His simple instructions offered in the Holy Scripture. Be willing to take His Yoke and experience his inexpressible, glorious Joy. As you submit to this bond of love He will fill your with life and abundance. So identify one area where you are leaning on your instruction book and not His. Today, try His instead.

Help me, Father, to remember and believe that only You know what is best for me; even when it involves limitations and restrictions. I long to be filled with Your Life and Joy…so please show me how to take Your yoke on me. I pray in the name of my ultimate Yoke-bearer, Jesus Christ; and all God’s children said - AMEN!

Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.
Matthew 11:29-30
These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.
Proverbs 3:5
