Stepping Stones: Don't Spoil the Brownies!

Transformational Tip
Faith is everything. Faith is a gift given to all of us; we just have to find a way to not mess it up. Read what Jesus tells us in Mark 9:23 – that all things are possible to him who believes. So what gets in our way? Unbelief. This is where Satan spends most of his time. His lies, deceptions, are crafted to create and foster unbelief. As Michael Pink wrote: Letting unbelief into our minds spoils our faith. It’s like putting dog do-do into the brownie mix…doesn’t take much to spoil the brownies.
Remember the simple formula to spiritual maturity; Believe > Receive > Become. Today, take a deep look and identify an area of your life where unbelief/deception has a stronghold. Don’t believe God’s forgiveness is complete...you deserve more…God isn’t all powerful…You know what’s best for you…other people’s feelings or opinions are all powerful…looks/fashion are more important than God’s desires for us…I am too old to change…we all could go on with infinite examples. Take a couple minutes and click the Past Devotional link below and list examples you have seen in others or struggle with yourselves. (just hit the comment link at the bottom of the devotional) Add how God has helped you become aware or improve in those areas to encourage others who might be struggling with similar issues. Restore your faith today and begin walking in the authority you know deep down inside that has been given you by your Lord.

Prayer
Dear Father God,
I thank You for the wonderful gift of faith. I know that all things that come from You are perfect…and it is me that reduces my faith to the point that lets other things get in my way of Believing and then Receiving You in the full measure intended by You. I pray Father that You fill me with Your Holy Spirit. I say to You as the boy’s father said in Mark 9:24; “I do believe; help me overcome my disbelief.”
Fill me with faith Lord so that I may follow wherever You lead me. I want to follow wholeheartedly, with the anticipation of Your Joy and Peace quickening my pace. I don’t not know what lies ahead…but You know and that’s enough for me. I know that more blessings are right around the corner. I pray Lord that today You help me walk by faith, not by sight. I pray to You with faith and expectation in the name of Jesus – and all God’s people said – AMEN!

Stepping Stones: Do Not Open That Box!

Transformational Tip
We have all heard the term “Pandora’s Box.” Pandora is a figure out of Greek mythology; and she came with a box, unbeknownst to her, that is filled with all the evils of this world. She was told to never open the box. But curiosity got the best of her and she opened the box…and in doing so released all this evil, sickness, pain and suffering. She tried shutting the box, but it was too late.
When we make bad decisions, there are known consequences that we accept the risk of happening. But when we choose trouble, cross the line of right and wrong, we are in a way opening Pandora’s box…opening ourselves up to the infinite amount of unknown consequences. I have a personal example to share with you.
I was speeding (the bad decision) while traveling cross country to visit my brother. Was stopped by a police officer and received a ticket which I was required to pay in 30 days. I forgot to pay that ticket (another bad decision). Over a year later I was once again driving out of state and yes, speeding again. Got pulled over in Ohio and was informed that my driver’s license had been suspended by Pennsylvania due to the unpaid ticket in Indiana. My car was impounded, got a ticket for driving under a suspension as well as a speeding ticket. Had a mandatory court appearance a week later which was schedule on the same day as a very important client meeting that I had to cancel. Had to post bail and then have a friend come and get me. To have my licenses reinstated I had to pay the fine in Indiana (with penalties), submit paperwork to Pennsylvania and wait. This whole ordeal final cost was $1,625.00 and days of lost time vs. taking the time to pay the original fine of only $124.00 on time.
Certainly not proud of this story, but it’s a mild example of what happens when you chose wrong over right – you open Pandora’s box and you have no idea what type of unknown consequences and how much evil will come out of the box.

Prayer
Dear Father God,
At times, I continue to dig my hole deeper and deeper vs. just climbing out of that hole. I am embarrassed of my poor choices…of my bad decisions. And as I look back at my poor choices and sinful ways, I see the huge ripple effect of pain and suffering my sins have caused me and those around me…more than I could have ever imagined. Help me to be mindful that opening Pandora ’s Box is the last thing I want and need. I pray Father that You help me live the life You have created for me, keep me from being my own worst enemy. I know Satan is trying hard to devour me…and at times it feels like I’m helping him do his dirty job. Raise me up Lord. Take my hand and help pull me out of this hole I am digging. I ask this in the name of Jesus – and all God’s people said - AMEN!

Stepping Stones: "I Have Sent Them..."

Transformational Tip
Know that as a believer you will not be of this world, but you have already been sent into this world…divinely appointed and placed. In John 17:20 Jesus actually prays not only for his current and present disciples, He prays for all future believers that we may be as one. Jesus prays that we will be one just as He and God are one. Amazing how instantly I felt such a strong bond with fellow believers I had never met before when I went to Kenya, Uganda, and especially in Iraq. Makes sense since we are spiritual family…brothers and sisters in Christ! Actually, I feel a stronger bond than with some of my biological family members.
Today, feel the sense of a community of believers. In some way…even in the smallest of ways…bring the message of Christ to others. Pray for someone in need, forward a past Stepping Stones Devotional to someone, offer kindness to someone who is in the midst of a storm. As one, let’s move God’s Word forward into this world.

Dear Father God,

Stepping Stones: Our Loaves and Fish, Multiplied

Transformational Tip
Here is how God has blessed us offering up our 5 loaves and 2 fish to feed many.
I subscribed my Dad to the newsletter. He loves it and now has renewed his faith. It has helped his wife through the loss of her mother. His comments-“ I am very grateful that you thought of me and sent me Stepping Stones Devotional. I had backslid so far that I didn't even realize it enough for it to bother me! It's like I'm Lazarus "coming forth" from the dead!' he suddenly died at age 67 just before he was to be baptized.
If left to my own devices, I tend to think of God as always ready to smack me for my sin. In my twisted thinking, God is only that way towards me – everyone else is accepted and lovingly forgiven. Stepping Stones is such a tangible reminder of God’s grace and unbelievable love for me (& everyone!!).
I do Bible studies with women in prison. I took about 20 of your devotionals in this past week and the women were so blessed. I had them look briefly through the devotionals and when one of them captured their heart, they would choose it and then read it and tell why they chose it. One by one, each shared how the one they chose was exactly where God had been speaking to them. It was a wonderful exercise in how God always confirms what it is He is trying to get across to us and how He speaks directly to the heart. So, thank you!
They are also being read by an Appalachian woman from the sticks who is in her 40's, who does not attend church, and no one around her does, whose husband is experiencing serious heart failure at present. She's at the end of her rope. She is learning about God in ways she has never even heard of before. She does not want to subscribe, but she asked me to keep forwarding them when I think they're "right." (And believe me, I send her 4-5 per week.)
As missionaries in Tanzania and your daily devotions are very fitting with many of the issues we face here. After the Father’s Day message, I went outside and played with my 7 and 8 yo daughters, hide-and-seek, kick the can, and capture the flag. It was the most fun we have all had in a long time.
Sometimes, I forget that it is up to the Lord God, to let me live one more day. I tend to assume that I will be here on earth tomorrow. But God wants us to live for today and today only, the future is His. You have been a great blessing to me, and now I know why my girlfriend loves your devotionals so much!

Stepping Stones: Stepping Stones Has A Big Toe

Transformational Tip
Try this…Close your eyes (after you are done reading this), then put your arms straight out in front of you(like a zombie pose). What saves you from falling on your face? Your ugly, smelly BIG TOE! We all need a big toe or we would fall on our face. But if our body was only big toes, we wouldn’t see the couch and would stub our big toe constantly. Without a stomach or heart, foot gets no nutrition to use the big toe. We need all our body parts working together in the amazing way God created. Well, God also described another body, the church, and the body parts are us believers. Like the human body, for maximal functioning, to glorify God, the parts need to work together, communicating with and supporting each other.
Stepping Stones started Feb. 19, in 6 months, we’ve sent 204,000 devotionals…the initial day was 650. This morning, 1390 people will get Stepping Stones from us directly and another 100 -250(possibly more) get it from you emailing it or printing it out and using it in prison ministry or small groups you lead. You send us amazing comments, which greatly encourage and enrich us, but we want the rest of this Stepping Stones community to also benefit, helping each other spiritually mature.
To achieve this goal, we started a Stepping Stones blog site…any of you can post a comment (anonymously if you want), read each other’s comments, and we can all benefit from collective wisdom, experiences, and perspectives. Don’t be shy as we are here to build each other up as Jesus modeled and God desires. Prayer
Dear God, You are amazing and an awesome creator…the way You made my body with all the intricacies of my eyeball and brain…and the simplicity of my big toe. Thank you also for the body of believers You have created, with Christ as our head. I am sorry for how all the Christian churches don’t work together as one united body…it must grieve You so to see this body fractured. I thank You for and pray You strengthen this part of the church body, the Stepping Stones Community, as we encourage, teach, and care for each other to be Lighthouses shining Your glory, love, and grace to all who need it, and helping each other stand firm in the waves and storms of this world. In Jesus’ name as the head of our body – AMEN!

Stepping Stones: Envy=God Doesn't Know Me

Transformational Tip
We've spent the last 3 days deconstructing envy...we pray it has been helpful to you. Today, the last in this series on envy, the Tip reveals the destructive, insidious lie, distortion, and belief behind envy. When you envy someone's possessions (we aren't talking about Godly traits or living that you see in someone else), what you're really saying is "I am not content with what I have, I deserve more, that ______ should be mine, not my neighbor's." If God makes the decisions regarding who has what, the core belief of envy is...God made a mistake! He didn't give me what I deserve...in fact, He gave it to someone else." If God really knows me, or loved me, He would give me what I want or "need". All part of the plot to make it seem like God isn't interested in us, doesn't love us, and can't help us....the lie also draws us away from God, sabotages the relationship God desires with and from us, then pushes us to rely on ourself.

Prayer
Dear God, Your love and grace for me are magnificent. Thank You so much for being perfect in all ways. I confess at times I see something another person has and wonder why I don't have that...and at times my strongly, resent that I don't have it and believe I deserve one, or even his. I regret, I sadden You as You have given me so much to be grateful for and I am blowing all those gifts off and wishing for the one I think I need, but You know isn't right for me at this stage of my development and skills. I yearn for a heart that seeks to grow, wants to change, and is willing to have the pain, in order to get the gain. God, I know You will share in that pain and provide peace and comfort, so help me be brave to step one Stepping Stone closer to the life that is within reach. In Jesus' name I find true contentment and absolution - AMEN!

Stepping Stones: Recalibration Feeds Envy

Transformational Tip
Yesterday, we looked at the envy trap Satan sets to get us off track of the path to Christ-likeness. Today, let's look at why we are so susceptible, over and over, to this envy trap. I remember my first paycheck, seemed like so much in high school, then in college. In med school, I had more bills and made 8000/yr and that seemed like so much. But then the third and fourth years of med school, I would work 60-100 hrs/wk for NO pay. Starting residency, I was so much in debt, hadn't had a paycheck in 2 years, and was desperate for money. That first month, I made 36,000/yr. it seemed like a million. I felt so rich...thought it would last forever...believed I was in financial heaven. I was able to buy a TV and bed(moved to California) and eat out when I wanted. Well, 6 months later, I was amazed at how little I now had at the end of the month. I didn't have enough. Residency year 2, I got a raise to 39,000/yr. Wow, I'm rich again. In 5 months, I started to get that "It's not enough" feeling. Year 4, I was making 45,000 and moonlighting to almost double that. Again, I felt rich, but in about 8 months I needed more. What was happening is the phenomena of recalibration. Our flesh is never satisfied. We have a certain setting for needs. Once we hit hat mark, we reset or recalibrate to a higher setting...we need more for the same satisfaction. Needing more as time goes on happens in a lot of areas... money...space in a kitchen or yard...alcohol or caffeine...more out of marriage now than I set when engaged...job satisfaction...needing 2, 3, or 4 cars. Our amnesia to where the real settings need to be, and this recalibration, dangerously dangle us right over the envy trap.
Today, examine your needs meter. Have your settings been calibrated much higher than really necessary. Evaluate where God would set them, or, how Jesus set His.
The real problem with envy, tomorrow.

Prayer
Dear Father, Thanks for meeting my needs. Help me understand the difference between real needs and desires, and be satisfied and thankful when You provide for my needs, not saying "thanks, but I need more". Help me focus on what I have and not I want I don't have. God, You are so awesome and Your design is perfect, help me be transformed through Godly decision-making and not conformed by fleshly decisions.
In Christ's perfectly calibrated offering and name, AMEN!

Stepping Stones: Apples Aren't Good For You

Transformational Tip
Yesterday, we introduced envy, and getting our joy from being with God, not having what others have. Digging deeper today, envy is one of the traps Satan sets for us, using our pride, flesh, and satisfy-me-now mentality against us. Satan deceives us...distorts our lenses...into believing that our fulfillment and joy in this life come from psychological, physical, or material answers. In the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve had this fantastic set up, direct relationship with God...but they weren't omniscient and they were gullible (like us). Satan got them to believe they needed an apple (not as appealing as a steak), instead of staying in relationship with God through obedience to His instructions, to meet their deep needs. The trap you see, is, if you believe your happiness and contentment is dependent on your external circumstances, or from someplace or someone else other than God, you are screwed. Those things weren't meant to bring you what you desire nor can they. God designed us specifically to be immune to those external things, so regardless of our circumstances, or more importantly, the mistakes we make(financial, marital, parenting, sin, etc) that damage our cicumstances, we still have access to a peace, comfort, and joy that is independent of who or what is around us.
Today, look inside and identify some of your traps...apples...that you have been tricked to believe will satisfy your real needs. Don't get trapped!

Prayer
Dear God, You and only You are the source of my joy, peace, and comfort. . I confess my need to control is the apple I grab for a lot. Help me grow in trust of Your control in my life and not have the need to trust my inadequate abilities. Please help me allow You to grow the eyes that see and ears that hear the traps Satan places in my path and choose the Stepping Stone You have for my movement forward to Christ-likeness. Strengthen me through Your Spirit to resist the temptations and impulses of my flesh so i don't get trapped and again, having to ask Your forgiveness for my me-centered mistakes. But thanks for Your endlsess grace and forgiveness. In Jesus' all providing death and resurrection, AMEN!

Stepping Stones: Envy 101

Transformational Tip
Some of the world's most miserable people are those whose situation seems the most enviable. So as we watch these people, even our neighbors, we begin to think that joy and peace have to do with our circumstances; a better job, house, status, portfolio, wife/husband. Time and again we see people who reach the top of the ladder(societal standards) only to find emptiness, doubt, insecurity, fear, addictions, chaotic behavior, among other "trappings" awaiting them.
God's Holy Word tells us that we are not to set our desires on anything that belongs to others. Not only can these cravings make us miserable, they can lead us to other sins such as adultery, addiction, and stealing.
True joy will never come by envying others. True Joy is a byproduct of living in the presence of God. Therefore you can experience true joy anywhere and in any circumstance; from palaces to prisons, anywhere.
Today, be mindful of envious thoughts and desires. Instead, concentrate on staying in communication with God. No need to be envious of anyone; after all the most precious and valuable possession is free and available to everyone; eternal life through Christ.

Prayer
Dear Father God,
I thank You for all the blessings and gifts You have given me. I know that You will provide everything I need, but Father I confess of being envious of others and their possessions. Grow in me a heart and mind for the eternal kingdom and awareness of my spiritual needs, and less focused on my material and psychological answers that are short-sighted, quick fix solutions. Thank You for being patient with me all these years, as I am a slow learner, but excited with what You are showing me in my life these last few years. In Jesus' all-satisfying name we pray -AMEN!

Stepping Stones: Knowledge vs. Experience

Transformational Tip
As Christians we should be constantly striving to grow in Christ...to grow in our spiritual maturity. Unfortunately many Christians believe the answer to growth is more spiritual knowledge. But real growth comes with experiencing Him. We should not confuse knowledge about Him with knowing Him experientially. My wife is an outgoing, fun, generous, and caring person to hang out with and talk to. No matter how accurately I describe her, increasing your knowledge of her... even showing home movies of her...you would never really know her until you experience her in person. The Bible is filled with messages about us needing power through His Holy Spirit. Power to grasp the vast magnitude of His Love - the Love that surpasses all understanding and knowledge. Knowing Him is so much more than storing facts and commentaries about Him in your memory banks.
Today, begin the process of knowing your Lord by first trusting Him. When you are uncomfortable...alone, anxious, sad...trust His promises to you, then experience Him acting in your life. Now you are getting to really know Him, in that Biblical-kind of way. You got to put yourself out there a bit, just like you do in a real human relationship, when you are really trying to experience someone. Rely on your trust in Him, His promises, His character, His teachings. You've accumulated that knowledge of Him, now apply and act on it. Continue to live and communicate as if He is in your life, because He is! No matter what is happening, trusting Him then drawing close to Him are excellent ways to experience Him.

Prayer
Dear Father God,
You are such an awesome God. Who but You could be everywhere at all times. I am humbled and amazed that someone as great as You cares about every detail of my life. Help me Lord to keep You always before me. Help me not just know facts about You, but to let me experience You intimately. When I feel needy Lord, help me run to You and not to other gods and things that I have used to replace You, other things that only give me temporary relief...and many times makes things oh so much worse. I pray this in Jesus' holy name - AMEN!

The Truth
I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge-that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

Stepping Stones: Eternity 101

Transformational Tip
A few years ago I lost my brother and best friend to cancer. Thankfully he had dedicated his life to following Christ years before his illness. Just before his death he looked at me as if he were looking right into my soul and asked me a very simple question: Have you ever really thought about eternity? I've been thinking about it ever since.
Many times we will hear Christians talk about life on earth compared to eternity; they would say "A blink of an eye." While our time on earth is certainly short and fast compared to eternity, how we spend that time determines how we will spend our eternity. Yes, our time on earth is very important and is our introduction into eternity.
When we don't know Jesus, we make choices as if this life is all we have. In reality, this life is just the introduction to eternity. And how we live this brief span will actually determine our eternal state. What we accumulate in this life (material things) has no value in purchasing eternal life.
Today, begin viewing all that happens from an eternal perspective, you will find both your values and your decisions changing. If you aren't a believer in Jesus as your Savior, you got a life altering decision to make that affects where you spend eternity. If you do believe in Christ, you will be in heaven for eternity...awesome. But is how your living helping others realize the ultimate eternity determining decision they need to make. Sure, you might be a good person, but are your daily activities just making this earthly life more comfortable for you....or are you out there, in action and word, sharing the good news with others to affect eternal things. This is what we are called to do, and God has put people in your life, today, to build deeper relationship, ask them more personal questions, and today or soon, help them know their eternal options rest in Jesus. Be a Lighthouse to others.

Prayer
Dear Father God,
I come to You to praise You and give You glory. I come to You confessing that I do not have the eternal perspective that I want to have...should have. I thank you for my salvation and those who spoke to me about eternal things. I know Your Holy Spirit changes hearts and opens eyes, but I know You want to use me and I have a role to play in securing eternity in Your presence for others. Lord please help me let go of all those things I cling to in this temporal world. As I release my grasp on those "things", it frees my hand to reach out and take hold of Your hand as You guide me to help others understand the eternal home You have promised me and all believers. I pray Father that as I experience suffering and as I experience the storms of this temporal world, that You help me shift my focus to eternity...my ultimate destination. I pray this in the name of my savior, Jesus Christ - AMEN!

Stepping Stones: Stop Worrying and Start Living

Transformational Tip
Today's title is so overused, such a cliché. But worrying is one of the most destructive of all human habits. When we worry it decreases our effectiveness across all areas of our lives. The reality is that we worry about things that haven't even taken place yet...and may never happen. Mark Twain said it well; "I am an old man and I have known a great many troubles, but most of them have never happened."
Worry is excessive time, energy, or resources spent while using distorted negative lenses to evaluate the future, especially things that are out of your control. Concern is using the appropriate time, energy, or resources while using Godly lenses to evaluate the future things that are within your control and really seeing potentially dangerous obstacles to Godly living . Since our time, energy, and resources are finite, worrying is spending resources on our kingdom and detracting from endeavors God wants us to be involved in to impact His kingdom. Worry is truly a selfish activity.
Not only is worry destructive and me-centered...worrying demonstrates unbelief; worry means that we do not believe that God can look after the details of our lives...He will shirk His responsibilities!
Today, stop when you are getting tense, anxious, worried, or spending too much time thinking about something negative. Determine whether you are using Godly lenses and are concerned about the impact to God's kingdom, or worried about the impact to your kingdom. Then look deep into your heart to see where you are putting more faith in your ability to control that which is out of your control instead of trusting God to be who He has promised to be. Observe how God's involved in your details today. You will learn a lot about yourself and His desire for you.

Prayer
Dear God,
Thank you for being the Ruler over all things...and Your omnipotence to take care of anything the way You know is best. Thank You for taking care of all my needs in the way that will help me grow, taking into account my past detours instead of following Your path for me. Please give me eyes that see Your involvement in my life in every detail, and when I can't see, strengthen my trust in Your track record and Kingdom rather than trusting my own track record and wanting my kingdom agenda. Give me the courage to look deep into my heart for the idol I worship above You when I worry, and the power to believe You will take care of that pain more than my idol will. In the name of the Prince of Peace, Jesus Christ - AMEN!

Stepping Stones: Communication 101

Transformational Tip
Today's message is focused on those parents who are sending their children off to college over the next few weeks, and a little memory lane for those that who crossed this Stepping Stone in their life's growth path.
The moment, that moment where you say goodbye to the child you are dropping off at college for the first time, will get burned into your minds forever. It was in mine.
We have taken this child from diapers to diploma... been the primary influence in their lives...so many celebrations...some times of sadness and hurt...being involved in most details of their lives....many fears and surprises filling our memory banks. We want to protect them from so many dangers and hurts...save them from the wrong turns we took. Concerned they won't have a protector or advocate like us around anymore. During those two decades you have seen your child change so much.
But now it's your turn to change. The love for your child when he or she leaves home stays pretty constant...but the way you will interact with your child will be drastically different. As you shift roles, be quick to listen and slow to speak. Listen instead of lecture. Begin to create a relationship that fosters communication. Listening first shows you respect them, are giving their ideas and views honor and dignity, are interested and care, and understand that this particular issue is important to them. Listening builds a bridge from your island to theirs (even though the geographical distance is growing) so you can send the important information you want them to hear.
Today, as you make this transition, try and forget about the litany of "who, what, when" interrogation techniques you have relied on since your child became a teenager. Shift your focus now to a more faith based approach. Try praying more. Try an inquiry with your child like: "How would you like me to be praying for you today?" Remember, they have an advocate and protector more powerful, skilled, and with better access to God than we ever could dream of doing ourselves.
If your kids are adults, never to late to employ this strategy. If they are younger, never to early to start.

Prayer
Dear Father God,
I pray today for all parents who are sending their children off to college. I pray that while experiencing the loss, they take this opportunity to grow. They have focused so long on the growth and development of their child that many times they have neglected themselves physically, mentally, and spiritually. Help these parents know Father that their jobs as spiritual leaders within their families never ends. Give them the strength and wisdom to minister to their college children.
Help them Father to move to a mindset of praying...not prying. Give them all your peace and joy as they experience the sadness of separation and loss so they may receive Your mercy and find grace to help them in their time of need. I pray this in the name of Jesus Christ our savior - AMEN!

Stepping Stones: Bridge-Building 101

Transformational Tip
Today is a special day, more special than most I am blessed to have. Today is my 18th wedding anniversary. Yes honey, I did remember. Marriage is an amazing institution, yes institution, as it and we tend to drive each other crazy at times. Crazy in love alternating with crazy from anger, hurt, or feeling overwhelmed. Thankfully, God brought the best person I could ever imagine into my life. Way better than I ever deserved or could "get" on my own. Our whole story is filled with unbelievable, one in million kind of occurrences...it is so cool to reminisce and think about even now. We are almost total opposites, which really attracted us to each other in the beginning. Our differences though, have been challenging to navigate. She has become my best friend and has taught me so much about myself and life that I would never have understood on my own.
Life is hard at times, and she is such a great help and support, I can't imagine doing life without her, her love, her smile, and her unconditional acceptance of me with all my shortcomings and me-centeredness. She was God's catalyst to open my eyes to follow God's will and not my will.
God really understood the importance of spouse to each other in a marriage, and a mother and a father's role, differently but complementary, in raising children. It is neat how we have learned to draw on each other's strengths better and cover for each other's weaknesses.
I just wish my learning curve was quicker...I could be the man I vowed to be 18 years ago...the man my wife deserves. I finally realized my wife isn't the enemy, Satan is the enemy and we need to huddle to battle against Satan, not squaring off against each other. Put Jesus in the center, quarterback of our team, and Martine and I are taking our direction from Him to combat Satan.
Today, if you are married, think of what you could do differently to really put your focus on Christ and what He wants as you relate to your spouse. If you are divorced or separated, take ownership of what you did and ask God and your spouse for forgiveness. If you are single, learn from the lessons of me and many. Marriage is incredibly rewarding, but also very trying and challenging.

Dear God,
Thank You so much for Your love for me and for Your amazing grace. Your son's incredible love and sacrifice for me and the church is the greatest model of how I should be obedient to You and love and sacrifice for my wife. Thanks for your forgiveness of my shortcomings. I ask for more openness to the Holy Spirit guiding me toward listening to Martine's needs, and a sacrificial spirit to serve her needs. And thank you for Martine, after Jesus' sacrifice for me, is the greatest thing that ever happened to me! In the unconditionally loving name of Jesus- AMEN!

Stepping Stones: Condemnation Free

Transformational Tip
We all have inadequacies, shortcomings. But sometimes there is a false standard we are held to that contributes to those feelings of inadequacy. That's why marketing and advertising are so successful, they point out (sometimes with embellishment) our problems and then tell (sell) us what we need to be adequate, satisfied, whole, healed, better in all areas we struggle. Actually, we are all born with an accurate sense of extreme inadequacy. Why? We are separated from God and desperately need Him...in fact designed to need Him. Our sin separates us from God and condemns us. So many of us carry the constant burden of condemnation. These feelings keep our heads down, smiles off our faces, and our lights shining with a very dim light. Does this describe you? Does it describe others you know? These feelings come from a lifetime of arrows constantly launched at us. Some of those arrows come from those closest to us...words and glances of disapproval from parents, friends, spouses, kids. We are not good enough, smart enough, strong enough...pretty enough. Know that all the arrows originate from our ultimate and only true enemy, the devil. He's the guy that hands out the arrows. He wants to capitalize on that original feeling of spiritual inadequacy, bankruptcy actually, and have us believe it will always hang around our neck and choke us. Satan is the one who wants us all to be in a constant state of feeling condemned. Remember that those who shoot the arrows are so full of arrows themselves. (And admit that you too have been an archer.) Remember that hurt people hurt people. They aren't your real enemy. But you and I and all those who are in Christ Jesus can be condemnation free from this moment onward. Scripture tells us clearly; "There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus."
Today,watch your words and actions. Don't let Satan use you like a puppet to launch arrows at others. Guard your thoughts and words. Look to encourage and comfort first, then gently correct. If you are feeling condemned, 1. repent by confessing your wrong-doing, 2. accept God's forgiveness, and 3. stop being so prideful thinking you need to add something to God's power, grace, or Jesus' death. Receive it all, believe it, and rejoice that our heavenly Father accepts the us, the prodigal child and can truly make us whole. Believe this good news and carry this message to those you know who suffer from inadequacy and condemnation.

Prayer
Dear Father God,
I believe You have freed me from all condemnation through the death of Your Son on the cross for my sins. And while I do believe, I still struggle with feelings of condemnation...sometimes for no apparent present reasons, but I know my past baggage rears its ugly head in subliminal ways. Open my eyes to issues I need to work on and apply Your instruction to. Father I come to You with an open heart and with a thankful spirit. I ask that You help me experience the full freedom You have made possible for me. Thank You Lord. I know that I need Your Spirit to help me, but I am unsure of how to fully engage His assistance. Show me the way Lord. In the name of the most adequate, purifying blood of Jesus - AMEN!

Therefore, there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death.

Stepping Stones: You Have Been Called!

Transformational Tip
In movies you see creative ways that legal papers, notifying you to appear in court or that you are a defendant in a lawsuit, are served. This is sometimes dangerous to the deliverer, as these papers need to be directly handed to the individual to make it official and take away the excuse of, "Nobody ever told me!" The deliverer always says the same thing; "You have been served." Today's message is to tell you, "You have been called!"
There are powerful themes that run throughout the Bible. One of the strongest is Jesus' message... "Come follow me." Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, the judges, prophets, David, Solomon, Daniel, all were called to follow God. Through the New Testament, Jesus continued to deliver the same message. Jesus' first words to Peter were "Come follow me." His last words to Peter were "...you must follow me." And Peter did follow Jesus from those very first words. Yes, he stumbled and fell; he even denied that he knew Jesus...but he followed.
Be clear about this; Jesus is calling you to follow Him. You may wonder what Jesus sees in you when he calls you...but remember that he called and accepted Peter with all his failings...and Peter went on to do great things for God. Jesus chose real people, sinners, to be his disciples.
Today, take a deep look into your heart. What distorted belief keeps you from following God in all areas of your life? Why do you have trouble believing God's truth in that area? It usually comes down to believing God's promises about when we suffer, are in pain, or pain is near. Don't let your pain or failings keep you from following God. You have been called! And you can't use the excuse, "Nobody ever told me!"

Prayer
Dear Father God,
I hear Your call to me. I have been trying to avoid it, act like I didn't hear it; but today I acknowledge that I hear Your call to me; I will follow You. Like Peter, I have many weaknesses and I do not feel worthy of Your call. Father, I pray that you infuse me, fill me with Your Holy Spirit. I pray that Your Spirit give me the strength and the knowledge I need to be a follower of the teachings of Your Son Jesus Christ. Help me Lord to help and encourage others to follow You. Let me be a shining example of Your love and peace. I give all glory to You my Lord. Amen

Stepping Stones: Can You Be A Bible?

Transformational Tip
Today is a sad day. A dear person died this past week and I am speaking at the funeral. I've known this person for about 18 months. She is only 24 years old and she recently put her faith in Christ. She was to be baptized tomorrow to proclaim her faith publicly, but instead got the ultimate baptism straight to Jesus' and God's eternal presence.
Even though God's purpose for taking her so young, as she had so much to offer, is a mystery, I do know all her suffering (and she was suffering) is now incredibly healed. She can truly rejoice! I also know that God wants us to go out to proclaim His Gospel and Jesus' ultimate sacrifice for our sin. We have to spread this good news to all, because we don't know the future for those to whom we preach. I am happy I discussed the gospel with her when I did, because I had no idea her death would come so suddenly.
We are all called to be disciples. When Jesus gave the Great Commission to the 12 disciples as recorded in Matthew 28:19-20 he was also speaking to each of us. Of course we are not all evangelists...but once we have "believed and received" Christ, we all receive special gifts, allowing us to do our part to fulfill the Great Commission. Whether you go across the street or to another country, go spread the good news. It's not an option; it is a command for all of us who call Jesus our Lord.
Today, identify several people God has brought into your life so that you could share His good news. Also, prepare yourself for people God will, in the next couple days, bring into your life. If you are looking for a way to take that sometimes difficult first step of overt discussion of God and Jesus, a simple and easy way to begin would be to send the Stepping Stones Devotional to someone who you would want to hear the word of God on a daily basis. Tell them that Stepping Stones is a beneficial message that helps you move closer to the person you want to be and might help them as well and you are interested in their thoughts about it. Encourage them to subscribe and to read the link on Spiritual Basics, especially the one on Salvation. Follow up with them to see what your next role of assistance to them can be.
Remember today as you come in contact with others that you may be the only Bible those folks will ever read. Can you be a Bible?

Dear Father God,
As I go forth today, help me further Your Kingdom even in ways that I don't know or understand. I'm not a preacher or a minister, but I do want to help spread Your Holy Word. Dear Lord, use me as Your disciple; fill me with Your Holy Spirit so that I may have the strength and the words to witness for You. I pray, Father, that You let Your light shine brightly through me. Help me be a beautiful example of Your love. Let Your light shine through me so that I may be a Lighthouse for those who need light while in the midst of a storm. Help move me, whether it be across the street or across the globe, to exactly where I need to be to serve You. In the saving name of Jesus - AMEN!

Stepping Stones: What's Your Focal Point?

Transformational Tip
One of my fondest memories as a young father was taking my daughter to ballet lessons. I would stay and watch...I still see her bright face looking over at me every time she did something challenging. Smiling and raising her eyebrows saying with her face; "Did you see that Dad?" When she was being taught how to spin, I vividly remember the lesson. The teacher told the students to find a focal point, something they could look for and focus on as they completed each turn. She told them this was necessary to maintain their balance as they spin.
It seems that Satan entices us to spin our Merry-Go-Round of life faster and faster, and we get sucked into his trap. All the stress, struggle, frustration, feeling overwhelmed and disoriented. We are dizzy from the spinning! Why? Because we don't have a focal point. Just as a ballerina must keep returning her eyes to a given point to maintain her balance, we need to have a focal point to gain our balance, grounding, direction. Too often I used to turn to others, or things...but they are not fixed, secure, immutable. They fluctuate with the winds of their life or culture. They also have an agenda at times that doesn't include guiding me or not in my best interest.
Today, Make God your focal point, keep returning your focus to God to keep grounded, focused, your balance. Focus on, think of His promises, character and teachings. God understands the limitations of your human condition; He knows that you will lose sight of Him at times. The wonderful part of this...you don't have to strain to hard to look to Him, because His promise is to always be with you. A quick glance His way will bring you back to equilibrium and balance.

Prayer
Dear Father,
I feel as if I am spinning faster and faster. I try hard to regain my balance, but there always seems to be something surprising me and keeping me off balance. I regret I look to transient focal points, and I even know as I look at them that it will be a waste of time and they will disorient me more. I pray for eyes that see the truth and sharply turn to You. I look to You Lord to find my equilibrium. I want You to be my focal point. Because You remain constant, you are the perfect focal point. I pray in the immutable name of Jesus - AMEN!

Stepping Stones: Relax, Cease Striving

Transformational Tip
As a kid, when I wasn't connecting, heard, or taken seriously, I would go up to my room and re-create pro basketball games in my room using a rolled up pair of socks as a ball, and a hanging lamp played the basket. Fantasy helped soothe my hurt, distract my mind from the hurt, and escape to someplace where I was important, valued, and enjoyed. When we feel misunderstood, devalued, or just simply overlooked, we turn to things that we believe will make us feel better; eating, shopping, sex, alcohol, drugs, TV, pornography, gossiping, exercise, gardening, knitting, cooking, business deal, work project, the list is endless. However, after a mild blip of satisfaction, none of these things really make us feel better over the long run. None of these idolatrous substitutes satisfies the thirst for what we truly desire; God's compassionate, unfailing love. In fact, these substitutes, take us farther away from what God offers us.
Today, identify what you turn to in these situations. Recognize your pattern. Is it really self-protective or actually self-destructive? When you are feeling misunderstood, overlooked...hungry and thirsty for satisfaction remember this; God is the Lover of your soul, understands you perfectly, and loves you eternally. Reach out to Him through prayer, the Word, and listen. Cease striving and know that He is God!

Prayer
Dear Father God,
I am so thankful that it is my soul that You love and not my appearance and performance. I am often dissatisfied with both of these...especially when I make them my focus. There are so many idols in this world, so many things to turn to when I want to feel better about myself, or to provide a distraction so I don't have to think about why I am hurting. Father, help me experience more fully Your unconditional love. Help me relax in Your loving presence and to always turn my focus to You. I know that You created me to know You, love You and make You the center of my life. I pray with hope in the name of Jesus - AMEN!

Stepping Stones: People-Pleaser or God-Pleaser?

Transformational Tip
For many of us fear of others is so deeply ingrained in our minds and our hearts that it's woven into the daily fabrics of our life. It's a silent debilitator. This fear comes in subtle ways; typically not fear of being hurt physically (but that type of fear certainly exists), rather the fear of being rejected...left out...not accepted... looking foolish in other's eyes.... judged incompetent... or not being valued. While trying to be a "people-pleaser" may appear harmless on the surface, it can create crippling fear. Elevating their assessment to idol status, worshiping it, that is what we are really doing. People-pleasing usually requires us to compromise truthful, healthy functioning and replace it with dysfunctional behavior. Ultimately, we are choosing to please others and displease God, instead of displeasing others and pleasing God. Fear of displeasing others allows this downward spiral to accelerate and feel out of control.
Today, begin replacing the fear of displeasing others with the dread of displeasing Your Lord. Make pleasing Him your highest priority. In general, we try to please people so that they will give us want we want...approval...value... importance... hope... love...acceptance...forgiveness...destiny...safety...comfort. Turn your trust to God who is the only source of providing all these things, and so much more...everyday.

Prayer
Dear Father,
I am just beginning to realize just how fearful I am of others. I confess Father to being a "people-pleaser." I am too concerned about displeasing others and looking foolish in their eyes. Help free me of this fear Father by developing a deeper trust in You. I know that trusting in others is risky while trusting in You is safe. I know that You have everything I need...that Your riches will never run short. Father, I desire deeply to change and to eliminate my fear of others. I pray in the name of Jesus - AMEN!

Stepping Stones: Be a Kid

Transformational Tip
The most rewarding memories I have as a father were when one of my daughters would come to me with a problem. Still to this day, a call from one of my children needing help or guidance evokes in me such a sense of urgency...it becomes my highest priority. Those requests and opportunities generate such a sense of wellbeing in me for a number of reasons; it tells me they know I love them, tells me that they love me, and finally, it tells me they trust me. As children, we all believe our father has super-human power to tackle and solve any problem, and our mother can soothe and comfort any pain or suffering. Magical thinking and willingness to suspend reality and believe the impossible is possible...that limitations don't apply to our parents...that they can read our minds and make our dreams come true...a young child's mind, not yet fully contaminated by the world's hurts, failures, and letdowns, has the perfect perspective on how to view God.
Maybe this is the reason scripture tells us over and again that being "childlike" is so very important. It's more than important; it's a requirement to enter the kingdom of God. God as our supreme Father loves us beyond our human comprehension...and doesn't a loving father want only the best for his children? Satan uses our parents and the world's failures to douse the child-like supernatural expectation, understanding, and belief that God instilled and wants to see in us. God's ways are mysterious to an adult, but to a child, they make perfect sense.
Today, begin receiving the kingdom of God like a little child. Suspend your cynicism and distrust...don't put God in a box with sides determined by your past hurts, letdowns, and imperfect authority figures. Turn to your Father and ask for his help. Show him that you love and trust Him...acknowledge your awareness that He loves you. Show child-like adoration, trust, belief, and expectation. Then results happen!

Prayer
Dear Father,
You are such a loving and generous Father. Thank You Lord. All glory to You Father. Like a child turns to their earthly father, I turn to You for love, wisdom, guidance... protection for all things that may bring me harm. I place my trust in Your Father...I trust You completely. With You I feel safe. Help me today and everyday to keep Your truths before me...to keep You before me always. Fill me with Your Spirit my heavenly Father so that I may grasp the magnitude of Your love for me. I pray that all those who are part of the Stepping Stones community grasp the enormity of Your love for them, Your children. Stepping Stones: Wanted: Real Lighthouses

Transformational Tip
The Vision of Lighthouse Network is to equip individuals to achieve their God-given potential by spiritually, psychologically and biologically renewing their minds so they become Lighthouses that shine God's glory, stand on firm foundation in the storms of their own life, and provide guidance and sanctuary to others in stormy times. The Stepping Stones Daily Devotional is one of our several outreaches to help people navigate life and become Lighthouses.
When is a lighthouse needed? In a storm, of course! When we are caught in one of life's many storms (and they can range from a rain shower to a tsunami) it's easy for us to feel abandoned...to feel as if we are at the mercy of the winds of fate...to feel as if we don't know which step to take. The stones before us appear slippery or as stumbling blocks instead of what we need...stepping stones.
As believers we must remember that God is sovereign. He is everything. He controls the history of the world including our personal destinies...and just as Jesus did for His disciples...he can calm the storms in your life. But if God has need for a storm to rage, He will make peace and comfort available to you if you choose to see and use His Light(house) correctly and continuously. Satan has many imitation lights out there that trick us and bring us to dangerous rocks, so it is important to be in the Word and growing your communication time with God so you know which Lighthouse is real (God's)... and which is an imitation (Satan's).
Today, stop and think about how God has served as a Lighthouse throughout your life, and about the events in your life that have led you to where you are today. Reflect on some of the false lights you followed, thinking they were God's Lighthouses. What made them look so attractive....how can you recognize that imitation in the future?
If you are in a storm, God is lighting your next stepping stones....but you have to look in His direction and then trust Him to step forward. Let God be your lighthouse and harbor...your place of safety.
If you are in a stable place, think of someone near who is in a storm. How can you be a Lighthouse to them today? Not by shining your light, but rather by letting God's light shine through you.

Prayer
Dear Father,
I am once again in another storm, a downpour. I'm tired of going from storm to storm. I know I have created some of these storms through my sinful nature and the bad choices...but I also experience storms that have nothing to do with my action; the death of a loved one, losing my job because of the economy...events that are out of my control. When in the midst of a storm I feel scared and alone...and I don't know which step to take next. I need Your light, Lord, to shine on my next Stepping Stones of my path to develop the mind of Christ. Help me and all those reading this devotional walk in Your light so that we may become the daughters and sons of light. Thank Your Father. There is so much I don't know. I pray that You fill me with Your Holy Spirit so that I may understand more and more. I pray this in the name of the Light of the world, Jesus Christ - AMEN!

Stepping Stones: Don't Be a BOB!

Transformational Tip
In the middle of junior year, I moved to New Jersey to finish high school. I left behind a lot of friends that I had known for a couple years and had many great experiences with. New Jersey was different in so many ways...especially lots of temptations and a faster pace. My big dilemma, I did not know who to hang out with...the popular guys...the jocks...the heads (drugs)....the troublemakers....the punkers....the brains...the clowns.. never thought of hanging out with the Christians because they were boring. Each group had pros and cons. What I didn't realize was the group I picked would have a big influence on me.
One of the first days at my new school, I met my new baseball coach....a different guy with a mixed reputation amongst the students. On away trips he had a saying, "Don't be a BOB!" I asked my teammates what a "BOB" was and they told me: B.O.B....Back of the Bus-er. Coach knew the troublemakers always went to the back of the bus to smoke, make-out, vandalize the seats, pick on others, gossip about teammates or coaches, moon other cars, etc. I looked at who was at the back, both on the team bus and the bus to school in the morning, and I realized that he was right. BOB wasn't necessarily a geographical identifier as much as a character identifier. Are you a BOB? Do you hang out with BOBs? How do you identify a BOB now, as an adult?
Today, take a look at your character. Are you handling yourself the way you should? How could you be an anti-BOB in tough situations, thus being a Lighthouse to others? Are there BOBs you are letting influence you? Why are you going to the back of the bus if you know that's where the BOBs are? If you don't make an intentional decision to avoid the BOBs, you will gravitate to them.

Prayer
Dear Father, thank you for loving me even when my character at times is questionable and I act like a BOB. Thanks for sending your son to model the character that delights you and also will bring me the most fulfillment in life. Please help me develop eyes that really see BOBs and anti-BOBs and courage to avoid the acute thrills the BOBs will bring. Help me submit to the Holy Spirit's guidance as I see who God puts in my life to guide me and model Godly character. Help me be more aware of the influence I have on my kids and family, and be a better steward of my heart and the behaviors that flow out of it. In Jesus' precious name - AMEN!

Stepping Stones: Character Reveals and Guides

Transformational Tip
During President Clinton's dark time, a news reporter tried to pull George Bush Sr. into a Clinton bashing session. Bush offered only two words that said it all: "Character Counts". Character is the set of outward facing qualities that tell our friends, our families, and the world who we really are on the inside. Character is the reflection of what is really at the center of our heart. It's not about the words we speak; it's about how we live our lives and the behaviors we model. Anybody can pretend and wear a mask to hide the true nature of what is on the inside. That is where pressure, stress, life's storms, a bit of adversity come into play. You see, it is much more difficult to put on a mask in the midst of challenging circumstances....it is often during those storms where people's true colors are more easily revealed. It's what makes us interesting and attractive (or not!).
So how do we develop Character? In Romans 5:3-4, Paul teaches us that suffering produces character. While it is admittedly difficult, try to see and be thankful for the fact that God is using life's difficulties...and Satan's attacks...to build your character.
God brings storms to 1. build character, 2. show us what is at the center of our heart, or 3. allow us to succeed, to shine His glory to others and guide them through their storms.
Today, take notice when things don't go your way, what is your behavior revealing about the character of your heart.

Prayer
Dear Father,
Thank You God for the opportunities you give through my difficulties to grow in Your strength. I pray that You help me develop character that pleases You and allows me to be an example of a child of Yours. I confess, Lord, that I spend too much time and energy on my image management. Help me shift that effort to improving my character. Suffering and difficulty seems to be the norm for me rather than the exception. Help me, Father, to use these difficulties and suffering to build perseverance...and use perseverance to build my character. With Godly character, hope will be strong and abundant. I ask in the name of our Suffering Servant, Jesus Christ - AMEN!

Stepping Stones: Forgiveness Takes Away Their Power

Transformational Tip
We have been discussing forgiveness for several days: what it is, what it isn't, and why it is important. Today, I will tell you about the aspect that pushed me to really forgive. You see, I played a lot of sports and was a very competitive person...my kids would say I still am. When I got wronged, my competitive nature (as well as some other baggage) would kick in. I wasn't going to let anybody beat me! I needed my rival to realize that I was in control of them...that I wasn't beaten...that they got hurt more than me. In order for that to happen, I needed something from them. Admit they were wrong, take responsibility for their action, feel some pain, suffer a consequence, pay a penance for their transgression, make it all better. Realize the problem? My happiness, relief, or comfort depends on the other person doing something.
Therefore, I was giving my rivals power over me, because they can withhold the "it" that I need as long as they want. Me needing that "it" from them puts me in a dependent position to them and what they do. I had trouble seeing the relationship with them clearly and moving forward because I still needed an "it" from them. Bitterness, inferiority, fear, rage, nervousness, injustice, revenge, and many other uneasy feelings would course through me when I saw or thought of my rivals. A lot of my behaviors were to try to inflict pain on them or push them to see how they wronged me. Finally, I realized how much power and influence they had over me. I realized that I don't want to give them the power, and that I don't handle the power well myself. So I decided to give the power to God. He has the power, deserves the power, and will always see that justice is administered. I just need to let God do His job and I can then follow God's instructions to me.
Today, try to identify people that have power over you, or who negatively dominate your thought world. Chances are you probably haven't really forgiven them and still need an "it" from them for you to move forward. Think why you need the "it". That is your issue. Quit pointing the finger at others. God has given you way more than you could ever need or want, so what can someone else possibly give you that you can't move on without?

Prayer
Dear Father, thanks for helping me learn to forgive. Help me desire, think, and act in such a way that you are the one I want to have power over me. Help me to really see the forgiveness you extend to me, not worry about what others will or will not do, and help me see the evil one as the enemy, not my transgressor. By the power of Jesus' forgiving blood- AMEN!

Stepping Stones: What Biblical Forgiveness Is and Isn't

Transformational Tip
The last couple days we have talked about persecution and forgiveness, two very important and complex topics. As a psychiatrist, I see many misunderstandings about what real Biblical forgiveness really is. 1. Forgive is forgetting, 2. forgive and start with a clean slate like nothing ever happened, 3. forgive and trust just like you did before the transgression, 4. forgive is not ever bringing the incident up again, are the common definitions or understandings of forgiveness I hear from patients.
1. God never forgets, He is omniscient.
2. God took David's and Moses' sin into account long after their sins, therefore no clean slate.
3. God only trusts us as far as our skill set and reliance on Him(spiritual maturity) as evidenced by our past track record.
4. See pt #2 above.
An example is if a husband has an affair. You can't forget it happened because there is work to be done to figure out why it happened and how to fix it. Can't act as if nothing happened as the husband obviously has some deficits and areas of temptation and needs to be safeguarded and held accountable. So if he comes home very late one night with lame excuse, the wife needs remember the past and ask the who, what, where, why, and when, to make sure he didn't stumble or not on a slippery slope. She can't trust him where trust was until he proves trustworthy. Forgiving or being forgiven doesn't elevate someone's trustability. She needs to bring it up again to have regular assessment, accountability, and growth, or if she sees some worrisome warning signs. She knows his area of temptation and stumbling so we have to keep it in mind to help him grow and avoid it.
Biblical Forgiveness has 2 key components. First, giving up the dysfunctional anger (bitterness, revenge, spite, rage, etc) you have for the transgression or the transgressor or to God for letting it happen. Second, when we have been wronged, our nature is to want, need, and demand some payment from the transgressor. We need to turn this over to God as the great judge and executioner; He is the only one who can determine what is the fair and appropriate sentence or punishment for the infraction. (just like He is for us and our many sins against others).

Today, in those situations where you are struggling to forgive, or you have forgiven but it still hangs over you, think "what am I still trying to get out of them as payment?" It maybe an apology, to feel your pain, to have a consequence or punishment, some kind of material restitution, acknowledgment to others about what they did to you. If your happiness is based on getting that and they never give it, where does that leave you?

Prayer
Dear Father,
Thanks be to You Lord for Your incredible gift of forgiveness. Where would I be without it...buried under a ton of sin and shame. I am so quick to ask for Your Forgiveness Lord...but so slow to forgive others. Help me remember that forgiving others lifts a heavy burden off me...and places me back under the grace of Your forgiveness. I thank You Lord for the many examples of forgiveness demonstrated by Your Son Jesus. I seek to forgive as Jesus forgave...I seek the mind of Christ. Help me to understand I am not one to judge them and exact payment, but their transgression against me, although it hurts me, is even a greater transgression against Your holiness and You are the perfect one to hand out justice or grace, as You in Your omniscience and love for them knows is best. Grow in me a humble spirit to accept Your actions in their life and focus on my actions, thoughts and heart and not theirs. Help me Lord spread Your message about forgiveness in word, but especially in action. I pray this through Jesus Christ who paid the ultimate price so that my sins may be forgiven - AMEN!

Stepping Stones: A Startling Warning

Transformational Tip
Forgiveness is one of the most powerful; least understood and most commonly underused concepts included in the Bible.
Jesus gives us all a startling warning about not forgiving others; if we refuse to forgive others, God will also refuse to forgive us. (Now we know God does forgive us even though there is no way we can perfectly and totally forgive all those who have transgressed us.) Think about it - how long are you willing to go without the forgiveness of God. Great sinners are transformed into exceptional Christian all because of the power of forgiveness...the gift of forgiveness.
Give this gift to yourself and to others.
Jesus modeled forgiveness for us. Think of all those who Jesus forgave; the woman caught in adultery, Peter for denying he knew Jesus, the criminal on the cross...and those who crucified him. The giving of forgiveness brings joy and peace...the withholding of forgiveness brings bitterness.
Today don't let anything get in the way of you forgiving others. If you are withholding forgiveness you are missing a wonderful opportunity to experience joy...and spreading it to other. Make your joy grow today and gain the must-have forgiveness of your Lord for your sins.

Stepping Stones: Persecution is Draining

Transformational Tip
I grew up in a home with a lot of negativity, judgment, and frequent efforts of emotional manipulation. I would get so angry and so much energy....physically, emotionally, psychologically... went into and was wasted on dealing with these situations. Fighting back in various ways, trying to understand why and where it was coming from, attempts to avoid it, "why me" attitude, all sucked so much life out of me that enjoying childhood was a difficult task for me. Many of us have people in our lives who have or want to hurt us. It ranges from a few hurtful words, manipulation, to lies, cruelty, vindictiveness, and all the way to physical abuse or worse. You have to ask yourself the questions...why me?, how do I make them stop?, what drives them? who are they serving?...who are they trying to make happy? Dealing with such people extracts huge amounts of energy in trying to defend ourselves and/or possible counter attack and retaliation or "getting even" efforts.Today, let God deal with your enemies. We do have a stewardship role and responsibility to address our enemies, but we go overboard. God promises to help the persecuted and bring judgment on those who treat others with cruelty. So focus your energy on what is going on in your heart and mind regarding your enemy. Remember, Satan is the real enemy, not the person. They are just getting used like you are at times by Satan. Pray for them and be on guard... put on the armor for the real battle. If you know someone who is being mistreated, slandered and being attacked by others, send them this devotional. Spread the Word of God to give hope and peace to those in need.

Prayer
Dear Father,
I come to You, Father, in need. I have people in my life who are hurting me, trying to do me harm. My anger rages at the injustice of this. My human natural reaction is for revenge...for getting even. I know this is wrong and against Your Word. I release my enemies into Your care. I pray as David did to "make my enemies be like chaff before the wind, with the angel of the Lord driving them away"Help me Lord to remember that it is not the opinion of others that I must focus on. Give me strength in the battle against the evil one who wants to use this persecution to pull me away from you, distort my lenses, and sidetrack me with stinky thinking. Help me see myself through Your eyes. I pray in the name of Jesus - AMEN!

Contend, O LORD, with those who contend with me; fight against those who fight against me. Take up shield and buckler; arise and come to my aid. Brandish spear and javelin against those who pursue me. Say to my soul, "I am your salvation." Stepping Stones: Come-Listen-Seek

Transformational Tip
We buy and eat food. We must to live...to survive. But our country is well-fed, overweight even, yet we still are starving for spiritual nourishment. With all this food, supplements, restaurants, microwaves, we still struggle with anxiety, depression, anger, porn, addictions, insecurity, other people's opinions, sleeplessness, fill in your issue. Be mindful that food lasts for only a short time, and only meets our physical needs. God is eternal, and powerful to meet all needs.
God invites us throughout Scripture to come to Him for all our needs. In Isaiah 55 God invites the thirsty and his invitation is very clear and simple; Come>Listen>Seek.
Come means both feet in. Not ready to run the other way at the drop of a hat.
Listen is to really take it in and let it examine and reshape your heart.
Seek is to pursue the goal, relentlessly, like you lost a $10,000,000 lottery ticket.
Do you Come, Listen, and Seek God in this way? Why not? If you aren't, you are pursuingthe counterfeit that way and getting what you sow.
Today, go to your Father and listen. Go to your father, listen, and seek the mind of Christ. As Isaiah writes; seek the Lord while he is near. This is not because God will move away...but we do things to place distance between God and us. And we must not forget...Don't let God come to judge the earth before you seek and accept Him. Prayer
Dear Father,
I come to you today thirsty, hungry and tired. I thank You Father for Your ever-present invitation to come to You. I am learning that, because of my humanness I will always have ups and downs in my life. I have had many downs lately...I feel spiritually malnourished. When I am really feeling down I feel distant from You...I feel like a failure. At such times it's almost impossible to remember the Joy of Your presence in my life. When I cannot find the way to connect to You, help me at least cling to the promise of You.
I thanks you that You will fill me with Your Holy Spirit...and that Your Spirit will lead me to You and that I will "...eat what is good."
I pray this and all prayers in the name the Bread of Life, my savior, Jesus Christ - AMEN!

Stepping Stones: You Cannot Plan Your Way to Peace

Transformational Tip
My teenage years were not peaceful...I really struggled inside...feeling out of control. One of my favorite and frequent activities was sitting down and making a plan for the next 5 years of my life, one year at a time. Order my outside world, my future, my path...I could plan my way to peace. It took me a while to learn(not in college, medical school, or psychiatry training) this important truth about the brain. God did not design the human mind to figure out the future, for this is clearly beyond our capability. He crafted our minds for continual communication with Him. You will not find peace by engaging in excessive planning and "doing", with futile attempts to control what will happen to you in the future. This is not the path to peace. Excessive planning and doing is a too often practiced form of unbelief.
Today bring all your needs, your hopes and your fears to Your Lord and God. Commit everything into His care. When uneasy, instead of planning, stop, look around at creation and your life and enjoy the moment...bask in God's blessings, love, and amazing grace. Turn from the path of planning and doing to the path of peace.

Prayer
Dear Father God,
My mind spins with multiple plans. I spend so much time planning because I think it is the pathway to peace. And just when peace appears to be within my reach, it somehow eludes me. Just when I think I have prepared for all possibilities, covered all my bases, a meteor strikes my life and pushes peace once again beyond my grasp and throws me into another state of confusion.
Help me Father to stop this wasted effort. I bring to You today all my issues, needs, insecurities...I release them into Your care; for I know this is the true pathway to peace. Help me Father to find the next step, and the next, on this pathway of Stepping Stones. I pray to You Father in the name of the Prince of Peace - AMEN!

Stepping Stones: Complaining? Time For A Motive Check!

Transformational Tip
I was in restaurant the other day, the tables were close to each other...it was easy to hear (yes, eavesdrop on) the various groups talking. As I listened I realized there was a distinct pattern across the conversation - complaining. Everyone was complaining about something.
No one wins when you complain. You get all worked up, you keep pulling the scabs off of the sores that need to heal...and your complaining is almost always unwelcomed from those you are complaining to. Complaining to others puts you on dangerous ground. It actually opens the door to deadly sins such as pride, duplicity, laziness, self-pity, lack of forgiveness, bitterness, and rage.
When you look at the past, the goal needs to bring hope to the future. Complaining is not constructive remembering, it is destructive remembering.
Today, if you feel like complaining, talk with God about the difficult path you are on - He understands better than anyone else the stresses and strains that are affecting you. Talking it out with God will temper your thoughts, soothe your feelings, clear your perspective, and help you begin seeing things from His perspective. If you are complaining or listening to complaining, stop and take time to check your motives. Always remember where each of us came from, a sinner saved by grace... and there is a list of people with complaints about you, too.

Prayer
Dear Father God,
I have been on a long, uphill journey and my energy is almost depleted. In this state of mind I find myself all too quick to complain to others. I want to live by Your Word Lord...and Your Word teaches me to do everything without complaining. Help me Lord to bring my complaints only to You. Help to not ridicule others by complaining about them. Help me Lord to develop and maintain a thankful heart. I pray Lord that You help me send the message to others, in a gentle loving way, that complaining is wasteful and counterproductive. Help me lead them to You. I pray in Jesus' name - AMEN!
